i think this is subject verb agreement

1) I believe the answer is (B). Here we need a common "to". Here is the sentence with option (B) - During and immediately after the California gold rush, the way for a merchant to generate the most profit was to move a limited amount of scarce goods to San Francisco as quickly as possible, rather than carry larger loads more slowly, which determined the design of the clipper ship. - "rather" gets used to show two ways of doing things. Here we can ask "...generate the most profit was to.... rather than...".

2) I believe the answer is again (B). Sorry but I am not able to provide any explanation. Only can say that it sounds right.

3) I think the answer is (D). For parallelism, the answer is one of (C), (D) or (E). When we say literature, author is implied. So (D).
