Yep. Answer is C.

Can anybody explain me the difference in usage of "just as" and "similar".

Hey GD, I also am not sure about the general usage but in this case I believe the answer will be (A) and not (B) becoz of the following reason:

The word "similar" sounds more appropriate in case of objects with identical features. Eg. similar faces, similar cars etc.

"Just As" would sound more appropriate when we are comparing actions and situations. In this case, the action of "giving polio vaccine" is compared to "mass dietary change".

Please correct me if I am wrong. This is my interpretation.
Hi Puys,
Am a new user here. Well preparing from the last 1 month, but seem to do a lot of mistakes in SC.
Here is one of the question, i would like to discuss with you guys -
1. According to scientists at the University of California, the pattern of changes that have occurred in human DNA over the millennia indicate the possibility that everyone alive today might be descended from a single female ancestor who lived in Africa sometime between 140,000 and 280,000 years ago.
(A) indicate the possibility that everyone alive today might be descended from a single female ancestor who
(B) indicate that everyone alive today might possibly be a descendant of a single female ancestor who had
(C) may indicate that everyone alive today has descended from a single female ancestor who had
(D) indicates that everyone alive today may be a descendant of a single female ancestor who
(E) indicates that everyone alive today might be a descendant from a single female ancestor who
One more doubt, is "the pattern of changes" plural or singular ? Please help :

Hi Raj...
I believe the answer for this one is (D).
The reason lies in the answer to your question "Is "the pattern of changes" plural or singular ?"... Read the sentence carefully. "that have occured in human DNA..." modifies "changes" and hence "have" has been used. The underlined part is used to modify "pattern", hence we need to use "indicates". Also "decendant of" is the correct phrase.

The reason for rejecting (C) is that it is passive and wordy. Hope that helps.

ans (d)

pattern of changes is singular
so we can eliminate a,b,c
Then descendant should follof 'of' and tense should be present.
so eliminate (e)
so ans (d)

I dont undersatnd how pattern of changes is singular. It follows in the question as - the pattern of changes that have occurred in - have - can be used for plural right ?

Read my explanation Rajesh. I have already answered your question that "that have occured in..." is used to modify the word "changes" which is plural. Hence we need to use "have".

My 2c,
You can say, X is similar to Y.. which means some attribute of X is same as that of Y, which makes X similar to Y. In this case, something must be similar to polio vaccine, which apparently is not.

Just as X does something, Y also does. Well, this is a more granular level than similar, where we dont think about polio vaccine, but focus on what does polio vaccine do.

As a matter of fact, ignoring the grammar etc, this might be similar to the comparison between 'As' and 'Like'.

Hey Rajesh...
The subject of pronouns do not always have to come before the pronoun. As long as there is no ambiguity as to what the pronoun stands for, it is fine. I was stuck between A and B.

(C) is out as "its merits as a proposal" does nto sound correct to me.
(E) is clearly wrong.
Consider (D) - The sentence will be "According to some analysts, whatever the proposal's merits, to tax away all capital gains on short-term investments would, if enacted, have a disastrous effect on Wall Street trading and employment." - We need the words "proposal" since the words "if enacted" modify "proposal". If "proposal" is not there, the modifying words "if enacted" are left dangling.

Between (A) and (B), (B) is passive hence we go for (A).

Hi Rajesh!
Though and although both are 'Conjunctions of Concession' and they give a sense of Concession / Supposition.
Ex; Though he is black, he looks beautiful.
Though should either be followed by 'yet' or a 'comma' in the next clause.

Although / though mean 'inspite of the fact that; Even though ; However : But;'
Although and Though are often interchangeable. Although is usually placed at the beginning of its clause whereas though may occur anywhere in the sentence.

1. In the first sentence there is no sense of supposition so I would go with B).

2. A)

Please correct me if I'm wrong.
