GMAT Sentence Correction Discussions

I would go with D, though i first jumped onto E πŸ˜ƒ

The modifier "a kiowa matriach" is rightly placed next to 'Aho' and also 'that' is appropriately next to 'festivals' which is described in rest of the sentence.

Can you please tell the OA?

We will consider a sentence correction question ,today and try to understand the difference between less and fewer.
example
When drive-ins were at the height of their popularity in the late 1950s, some 4,000 existed in the United States, but today there are less than one-quarter that many.
A. there are less than one-quarter that many
B. there are fewer than one-quarter as many
C. there are fewer than one-quarter of that amount
D. the number is less than one-quarter the amount
E. it is less than one-quarter of that amount

well fewer is to be used in case of count nouns and less in case of mass nouns
now ,you might ask me what are they ,or might say this is more complicated than i expect and close the window, trust me i was one of those who used to close the window but now i realise that the human mind is the only thing that grows when used more.
Mass nouns vs Count Nouns
"10 items or fewer" vs "ten items or less"
TIP 1: whenever you can count use fewer

all of you must love to have coffee ,well i do so i will use it as an example
"coffee " is what is a mass noun ,you say bring me coffee i use it as a mass noun.
less coffee please while you pour it but if the waiter comes with 10 coffees and you are only 4 then you might ask him to get fewer coffees next time.what you have done here is converted a mass noun into a count noun.

here it goes what's the difference between them
i have score less than yours vs i have a score fewer than yours ..
which one is correct
exceptions
time, distance and money , in these its customary to use less.
eg:I hope is costs less than 20$ rather than saying fewer than 20$.

1. The lack of complete historical records from the mid-to-late 1800s have made some Black inventions difficult to trace to their originators.
(A) have made some Black inventions difficult to trace to their originators
(B) have made for difficulties in tracing some inventions by Blacks to their originators
(C) have made it difficult to trace some inventions by Blacks to their originators
(D) has made it difficult to trace some inventions to their Black originator
(E) has made it difficult in tracing some Black inventions to their originators

OA: D. But since records is plural it should be C
Can anyone please explain

Thanks
MM

subject is "lack of historical records" which is singular ( note "lack" ). It is not the historical records themselves which has made the tracking of invention difficult ; its the lack of them which has done so.
Yes the OA is C.

I also chose C, but was uncomfortable calling 4000 "the amount"

Yup, i too was initially skeptical about calling 4000 the amount but then i realized that fewer refers to the drive ins ( a countable object ) and amount to 4000 ( which is not a countable thing ) .

Btw , i do agree with u that amount should be used to desceibe uncountabel things only .

Anyways if u look at the other options u'll find that only B comes close to C as a viable option . But then in B the usage of as many is definitely wrong .

n what will you answer, if ur friend asked you , " Whats the amount that you withdrew from the bank yesterday ? " 4000 ( hehe ..right ) and dont we keep using the terms loan amount and all .

Hope this helps

the subject is THE LACK OF not records.. as the subject is singular....
see like this
Its not due to records that the trace is difficult but its because LACK OF RECORDS that the trace is diificult,... so the subject is lack of not reacrds ...
hope it helps
Thanks for the detailed explanation Saurav.
I totally missed the "recently" issue.

But I cannot quite agree with the past perfect thing.
If the slump in sales were not continuing (as suggested by the past perfect) to today, the retailer wouldnt have announced a sale.

I also think that "would" used in the non-underlined part is in future tense, not past. "would put up a sale" - sthg going to happen.

Which option would you have chosen if B had "recent" instead of "recently"

I would have still chosen A over B for the simple reason that statement A has been made in the reported speech ( indirect speech ) .

In indirect speech If the reporting verb (ex: said, told...) is in the past, the reported clause will be in the past form. This form is usually one step back into the past from the original.
For example :
direct speech: John said : " Jim has gone crazy".
indirect speech: John said that Jim had gone crazy. ( present perfect => past perfect)

So The first option is in indirect speech and the action of reporting is actually in the past ( in order to be parallel with said)hence:
Direct: the seven store retailer reported:" one of our many problems has been the recently extended sales slump.."
Indirect: the seven store retailer reported that one of its many problems had been the recently extended sales slump....

or you can say :

The analyst said, "Seven Store has been facing extended sales slump in women's apparel and therefore it will start a three month liquidation sale."

or in indirect speech you will report :

The analyst said that Seven Store had been facing extended sales slump in the women's apparel and therefore it would start a three month liquidation sale.

makes sense somewhat but dont you think"had been facing" suggests that the problem no longer exists?

Also I did not understand why "will" changes to "would" in indirect speech. Sound like indirect speech makes it less probable that the store will start the liquidation sale?

i think when using ellipsis we should always be careful about leaving out words . We should leave out words only if they have appeared verbatim earlier in the sentence.

I mean the usage " has not been allowed to and never would be. " would hv been correct but not "has not been and never would be allowed to ".

I think this is where both of us went wrong.

Saurav,

i think option 1 would have been correct if it would have been "has not been and probably never will be allowed to drive" because "would" is used to used to express the future in past sentences or used in place of will, to make a statement or form a question less direct or blunt or something like that...

but here, there is nothing like that. C,D & E are straightforward wrong... so B is the best choice amongst available.
