GMAT Sentence Correction Discussions

I'm glad I got this tuff one rite..:) it doesn't happen that often u see.. lol
let me throw in my 2 cents here..

B. The antecedent of 'it' gets too confusing as there are many 'its'
C. Same as B
D. 'you' refers nobody.Awkward contruction.
E. Option E sounds correct until 'the surface, apply primer to the surface'.But the 'and then paint it' part makes the construction little wordy and awkward.

So A is the winner

There is only one noun to refer to back to "it": the surface. Still not satisfied with A.

saurav,

What is the rule to use 'equivalent' as opposed to 'equal'?
Could you pls explain?

-Rajk

This is what i read somewhere :

In GMAT equal should be used only in its strictest sense, for example, 4 + 3 is equal to 5 + 2.

equivalent, GMAT says, is preferable when we are saying that two things are not entirely identical, but are almost equal. For example, Country X spent $XX on something, equivalent to the GDP of Country Y.

There is only one noun to refer to back to "it": the surface. Still not satisfied with A.

@ KingCat

can u mail me that brutal list of SCs.

Sorry to hv disappointed u man with my explanations ..but am not convinced with the OA s of atleast two Qs .

The no of female n male students wala Q n the primer wala Q ....does neone hv ne explanation for these two Qs
I would have chosen E if it didnt have "as well" in the end.
Can you please explain how "as well" gels with "and"

Isnt it reduntant ?

There is no better answer present in the options .
All other options flout the parallelism rule.
th

I also placed my bets on A thinking on the same lines as u did.
But the OA is B.

i think when using ellipsis we should always be careful about leaving out words . We should leave out words only if they have appeared verbatim earlier in the sentence.

I mean the usage " has not been allowed to and never would be. " would hv been correct but not "has not been and never would be allowed to ".

I think this is where both of us went wrong.

I found the number of male and female wala ques in Kaplan 800. But the explanation given is very unconvincing.
It says C n D are out for incorrect usage of idiom and there is no grammatical mistake in the other options . So out of A , B n E they hv chosen B for its conciseness.
Vikram,
option E is parallel too rite?

-Rajk

Yup, my mistake! 😁

    Plz confirm the OAs.
here, we have 2 independent clauses - "Schubert wrote a great deal for the stage" and "he is remembered principally for his chamber and concert-hall music". So with these clauses, the sentence wants to convey that Schubert & Hayden did same thing but in that work Schubert had a different specialization than Hayden had.
To convey this contrast better, we should include "also", so we are left with options B,D & E

    now let's take E.
"As Haydn did" is an subordinate clause which should reflect the contrast presented by the following 2 independent clauses but it doesn't. It only reflect the first independent clause not the second one.
In D - same error as in E, it also lacks parallelism by putting verb before subject.
So B is the right answer.

    Plz provide the OA

my pick is A.. its simple and precise..and gives the correct meaning..
    B. no need for also as there is no emphasis required as 'but' contrasts later
