GMAT Sentence Correction Discussions

Looking at the options I also got the answer as A..
You can easily negate b,c,d,e
b) had flourished.....as had the civilizations..verbs are not parallel..
c) that flourished... those had...doesnt make any sense..
d) again..verbs not parallel..
e) again verbs not parallel..

The best one is A..

I ate breakfast at the same time as Ram...here there is no confusion in the meaning it conveys...

You have rightly pointed out the flaw...but there is no confusion in the meaning it conveys,,

Thanks trustrajib,

i agree with you that it makes sense, but our intuition is not an excuse for justifying a grammatical flaw. There must be something behind it..
I think OA should be (E), because:

1) (D) is concise but does it clearly convey the idea? i doubt it.
2) (E) makes sense by presenting the group as the rival. "which" refers to group. Though grammar teaches us that "which" must be always used for non-restrictive clause but its use as a restrictive clause(as here) is also there(though rare).

Mr. Ashish, plz provide the OAs

OAs are D &C......i; also marked E for first one.....

Option (C) is correct.

"they" is ambiguous in options (D) & (E) - so rule them out.

the correct idiom is "...grounds FOR..". You can never say.. we have grounds TO do something.. Hence option (C) wins over the rest.

For the second , Apparently OA is C, you were right. Grounds for sypathizing with
and not Grounds to sympathize with .

How did you understand htis ? Or you just knew ?

Hi Ashish, can you explain the answer to the second question (C, i thought B), and what is the source ?

Actually it took me some time to find out why "for sympathizing with" might be superior to "to sympathize with"..

And i guess we always say "grounds for" over "grounds to" in english.. that's how i figured it out..

I hope i get this kind of enlightenment on my G-day..(which is just 6 days away!)

my picks are (E) for the first one and (D) for the other.

Plz provide the OAs

Question (1) - OA (C) - appeared in one of the ETS tests.

Question (2) - OA (D) - is from OG 11. The explanation given states that the statement "what it was.." is wordy, awkward and unclear. However the answer for question (1) - option (C) contains the phrase "what it was" in it.

Can someone plz help reason this out?

@ arch ..then do u mean to say that the option c for the second ques shud be correct... well IMHO the word " than "is missing after double in option C ...
An absence of a word ( such as than , that or the figure }after double leaves u asking the question double what ?? and hence doesnt convey the intended meaning of the sentence clearly.

Whereas if u look at the option C of ques 1 u'll find that the usage of the ellipsis is clear n concise as it clearly tells u the two things that are getting compared in the sentence n hence is able to convey the meaning of the sentence properly.

Also in ques 1 ur comparing the rates so u can say that rate of X was twice what it was in 70's whereas in ques 2 ur comparing pure numbers so u cant simply say double what it was in 70's ; to make the comparison complete u'll have to say double the figure for 70's or something similar to it.

My take: C & D.

1. to use "as fast as" is reduntant when u have already given "rate of increase"

2. What does it refer to ? 20,376 or 9% ?
Hence the best option would be D which makes it clear that the number is being doubled.

folks... I posted this earlier, but didn't get any proper explanation...can anyone plzzz help me out...

A very basic doubt -- OA ans is "C". Towards end you can see the pronoun "his". Now, as per basic rule, pronouns should refer back to a Subject. Now, with option "C" what is the Subject? /OR/ is that with possessive pronouns you can have Hemingway's as the reference....

advice...

(A) Each of Hemingway's wives--Hadley Richardson, Pauline Pfeiffer, Martha Gelhom, and Mary Welsh--were strong and interesting women,
(B) Hadley Richardson, Pauline Pfeiffer, Martha Gelhorn, and Mary Welsh--each of them Hemingway's wives--were strong and, interesting women,

1-C, effectively ...rate of increase was nearly twice what it was in ..
A - rate of inc wasnt twice as fast as 1970, it was twice as fast as
B - rate of increase cannot be faster, it can be greater or can
C - correct
D - faster again
E - rate of increase cannot be modified by two times "increase was two times" 2 times is an adjective. . Twice is an adverb that can modify increase.

2-D,
twice (adv) cannot and double(adj) cannot modify 20,000 is a noun.

I chose (B) as well.. but the OA is (D).. Puys any views?

D looks like the best amswer (reorganized for its decision to sell looks awkward in C). although in deciding looks strange, i guess its nto because it conveys that the decision was taken at teh reorganization
