GMAT Sentence Correction Discussions

OAs are (D) & (E) respectively.

I chose option (E) for the first question as well.. i dont quite understand why (D) is better than (E)!!

Mr Arch, please send across the OAs, will you ?
Guys,

Plz help me with this OG problem.

Beatrix Potter, in her book illustrations, carefully coordinating them with her narratives, capitalized on her keen observation and love of the natural world.

a) Beatrix Potter, in her book illustrations, carefully coordinating them with her narratives,
b) In her book illustrations, carefully coordinating them with her narratives, Beatrix Potter
c) In her book illustrations, which she carefully coordinated with her narratives, Beatrix Potter,
d) Carefully coordinated with her narratives, Beatrix Potter, in her book illustrations,
e) Beatrix Potter, in her book illustrations, carefully coordinating them with her narratives and

While providing the explanation for its rejection of (e), OG says "Them can not refer to book illustrations because the plural noun is the object of the preposition in"

Can anyone please elaborate this principal of grammar.

Thanks in advance

i think that there is no such principal in grammar.. but it is pertaining to this particular situation.

the phrase "carefully coordinating them with her narratives and" seems to modify the subject of the previous phrase, but "book illustrations" is not the subject but the object of the phrase.

I???, Seems difficult to even rationalize choice D over E. (And for the second too, its very confusing)Is there some explanation given that you can reproduce , we can then discuss , for both these questions. Where are these questions from ?

There's no explanation given.. These questions are from Scoretop 1000 SC Set.

The human growth hormone, made by the pituitary gland, is secreted during sleep in higher concentrations than when awake.
(A) during sleep in higher concentrations than when awake
(B) when sleeping in higher concentrations than waking hours
(C) in higher concentrations during sleeping than waking
(D) in higher concentrations during sleep than during waking hours
(E) in higher concentrations when asleep than when awake

In order to Rationalize, here are my inputs - E seems to say that when the Gland is asleep the harmone is secreted more. So ask the question Who os asleep creates confusion

While I can just as easily discount D , perhaps it correctly says Dreams, manufactured by the brain, occur during sleep.
Dreams, manufactured by the brain, when asleep - seems to suggest the brain is asleep

What during sleep ...in D, seems to be answered

I am not convinced but just my inputs

guys, i believe the difference is somewhere else..

it's like difference between "point of time" and "period in time"

its more logical to think of secretion as occuring during a period rather than at a point of time because secretion didn't start & stop immediately but it continued for a while.

"in higher concentrations during sleep than during waking hours" --- this signifies the period of secretion

"in higher concentrations when asleep than when awake" -- this signifies a point of time because "when" is an adverb telling "at what time" not telling the "period in time".

hope it helps.
ktyagi10 Says
"his" refers to the author who is not mentioned in the original option.

Then how can the choice be correct? As per the rules, pronouns should refer back to a Subject .

Guys, any suggestions...

The peaks of a mountain range, acting like rocks in a streambed, produce ripples in the air flowing over them: the resulting flow pattern, with crests and troughs that remain stationary although the air that forms them is moving rapidly, are known as "standing waves."

Though this is OG question,i will try to explain without referring to OG(to test myself )

Let's break down the main clause -
the resulting flow pattern, with crests and troughs that remain stationary although the air that forms them is moving rapidly, are known as "standing waves."

Subject = the resulting flow pattern
verb = are {it is wrong, should be "is" so possible choices are (C) & (E) }

now in choice (C)
Subject is modified by phrase = "with crests and troughs that remain stationary although the air that forms them is moving rapidly"
The above phrase has a main clause = that remain stationary although the air that forms them is moving rapidly
The above clause has two clause: one is main and other is subordinate.
main clause = that(crests and troughs) remain stationary
subordinate clause = although the air that forms them is moving rapidly

similarly, now analyze (E)

you will find the difference that the main clause preceding "although" has no verb.

I have a doubt.........

A colon(:) equates 2 parts of a sentence where the second part is dependent on the first...

Here "The peaks of a mountain range, acting like rocks in a streambed, produce ripples in the air flowing over them" and "the resulting flow pattern, with crests and troughs that remain stationary although the air that forms them is moving rapidly, are known as standing waves." are both independent......then hw can we use colon here........
Guys,

Please help me in one question from OG

Salt deposits and moisture threaten to destroy the Mohenjo-Daro excavation in Pakistan, the site of an ancient civilization that flourished at the same time as the civilizations in the Nile delta and the river valleys of the Tigris and Euphrates.

a) that flourished at the same time as the civilizations
b) that had flourished at the same time as had the civilizations
c) that flourished at the same time those had
d) flourishing at the same time as those did
e) flourishing at the same time as those were

the correct OA is A. i think as in option A introduces a subordinating clause.. but there is no verb after it. how is it possible? Please help me..

Thanks

Looking at the options I also got the answer as A..
You can easily negate b,c,d,e
b) had flourished.....as had the civilizations..verbs are not parallel..
c) that flourished... those had...doesnt make any sense..
d) again..verbs not parallel..
e) again verbs not parallel..

The best one is A..

I ate breakfast at the same time as Ram...here there is no confusion in the meaning it conveys...

You have rightly pointed out the flaw...but there is no confusion in the meaning it conveys,,
1. Byron possessed powers of observation that would have made him a great anthropologist and that makes his letters as a group the rival of the best novels of the time.
(A) makes his letters as a group the rival of
(B) makes his letters as a group one to rival
(C) makes his letters a group rivaling
(D) make his letters as a group the rival of
(E) make his letters a group which is the rival of

2. By showing that South Africa does not have a free market and is in fact a kind of collectivist welfare state for Whites only, Sowell argues that American conservatives have no valid ideological grounds to be in sympathy with the Pretoria regime.
(A) to be in sympathy with
(B) to sympathize with
(C) for sympathizing with
(D) that they should sympathize with
(E) that they should have sympathy for

Option (D) is correct..

Byron possessed powerS of observation....that make...is the right usage.

Therefore, rule out A, B & C.

Between D & E - D is more concise. This is because in option (E) what does "which" refer to? There is also no punctuation mark (comma) before "which".

(D) make his letters as a group the rival of
(E) make his letters a group which is the rival of

Option (C) is correct.

"they" is ambiguous in options (D) & (E) - so rule them out.

the correct idiom is "...grounds FOR..". You can never say.. we have grounds TO do something.. Hence option (C) wins over the rest.

I think OA should be (E), because:

1) (D) is concise but does it clearly convey the idea? i doubt it.
2) (E) makes sense by presenting the group as the rival. "which" refers to group. Though grammar teaches us that "which" must be always used for non-restrictive clause but its use as a restrictive clause(as here) is also there(though rare).

Mr. Ashish, plz provide the OAs
1. Byron possessed powers of observation that would have made him a great anthropologist and that makes his letters as a group the rival of the best novels of the time.
(A) makes his letters as a group the rival of
(B) makes his letters as a group one to rival:nervous:
(C) makes his letters a group rivaling
(D) make his letters as a group the rival of
(E) make his letters a group which is the rival of

(C) for sympathizing with
(D) that they should sympathize with
(E) that they should have sympathy for

The answers are in bold..
1. Byron possessed powers of observation that would have made him a great anthropologist and that makes his letters as a group the rival of the best novels of the time.
(A) makes his letters as a group the rival of
(B) makes his letters as a group one to rival

(C) for sympathizing with
(D) that they should sympathize with
(E) that they should have sympathy for

1-D, powers make, not power makes (of observation is just a modifying prepositional phrase). And make his letters a group is awkward, make his letters as a grp the rival of sounds better.

2-B, to sympathize with someone is the correct idiom, all other choices make it wordy or incorrect.

What are the OAs ?
