Hi Ankit, You don't need to beg for that π .....Its not Manhattan GMAT...but i got the source from "MR-Sentence-Correction-Guide" ..MR for Manhattan Review and i got this file from esnips.......I posted the exact text in the above post...
Thanks Madhav
According to Manhattan, different from is the idiomatic phrase.
I will try to provide reasoning for the correct answers...
1. "declined steadily during the first six months of this year but have remained virtually unchanged"...This is case of parallelism...
...declined steadily...in parallel with .....remained virtually unchanged......So E is answer..... B,C uses remain....and D misses year...and A has no parallelism...
2. This I am not sure....
3. In all the other choices ....chemical composition is compared to terrestrial lava...."different from that of any terresrial lava" compares correctly..here the it compares chemical composition of tektites with that of chemical composition of any terrestrial lava...
4 . Can any one provide the explanation for this.....
5. since it has .."But at"...."not only at" shud be used for parallelism......this eliminates C,D "The skill and the precision of the Anasazi" are two different things...so are shud be used...this eliminates A.....Cant find the diff b/w B & D....I guess in measuring is idiomatic than to measure.....
6. Have visited suggests the sentence is in Present Perfect....This eliminates B (see ...simple present), C(been seeing..present continuos)...E "marking by different colors" is illogical... "with different colors marking" is better than with different colors marking....so D is correct
1. Can u explain the parallellism that u mentioned. Shouldnt it be "have declined steadily.......(have) remained unchanged ? 4. In every option except E, it says that "lions playing.....without the telephoto lenses". 5. The skill and precision.........ARE. Also its the " skill in driving" not "skill to drive". Hope it helps.
Why do you say B is correct for 3 ? 1- X HAs been shifted towards ... by the motion and 2 - Has shifted ...by the motion. Who does the shifting, I think it would be necessary to say 'been' shifted by the motion. Although I am not 100 percent sure. What are your reasons for choosing B?

A is the correct one......if u refer back this thread u can see discussions on this question.....Passive construction required here........
In astronomy the term red shift denotes the extent to which light from a distant galaxy has been shifted toward the red, or long-wave, end of the light spectrum by the rapid motion of the galaxy away from the Earth.
For HAS SHIFTED to be correct......the senetnce should almost like this --->In astronomy the term red shift denotes the extent to which the rapid motion of the galaxy away from the Earth has shifted the light toward the red, or long-wave, end of the light spectrum.
got kaplan 800 the day u suggested me...i was trying for it for long time....it was not available..fortunately i got that...finished all quant from it, SC aand CR also....quant was ok....Sc was tougher than other books...CR just cudnot grasp more than 20-30%
RC is left out...still CR sems to be the area of concern
pls suggest me few more tricks to improve in these areas...as my time is running out..G day is 9th sept ALok

I agree with you for the 3rd one that ..."they" has a chance to refer to Tektites' or 'Volcanos'....but "their chemical composition" does refer to Tektites and the line after ";" semi-colon should also be the logical continuation of the tektites.... For the 6th one....although "seen layers of sediment in the gaping canyon" is concise ...the option had "with different colors marking" ...at the end...then it would be the best answer.... Regards Madhav
For question 2, i think the option B should've had "the Yankee peddler had learned before him instead of has because the sentence is in past tense ,so it should use a past perfect clarify the sequence of events
For question 3,option E has "terrestrial lava's, " which is little awkward, but option C has a semicolon seperator which means that the next sentence logically follows the subject of the first sentence. So I think option C is the right pick
For question 4,my pick is C,What is wrong with C?
For question 6 I too think A is the answer because "been seeing" is present perfect continous which is wrong in this sentence's context and ,"been able to see" is awkward. E is close but it does n't end well. So I thnik the right answer is A

Option E also compares the two things correctly. Why is "different" usage is correct and "differs from" is wrong?
hi Ankit,
I was just trying to reason for the correct answer which ashish posted... π π ... My apologies for that...and regarding answer...
If you see my post where i mentioned my answers....you will come to know that ..i all chose E......because..."Different than " is idiomatic than different from ...according to MGMAT SC. ....and "that of any terrestrial lavas " is correct rather than "that of any terrestrial lava"...here lava's should be plural right...

Hi , please indicate what the answers are , according to me 1-C, 2-D, 3 -B, 4-B (5 is a repeat)
3 - B is dicy because the way the sentence is structured a present perfect could express the sentence better (so A seems to be a good choice too). But I think GMAt would prefer a simple past, because the decision and the meeting happened simultaneuosly.

OAs are CDBC........pls post reasoning for other Q also.....
Did you type the questions correctly.....Im asking this because option D of question 2 states: (D) enrollment: the number of student in public schools has grown steadily since the mid-1980s and, at nearly 47 million, has reached
Shouldnt it be 'number of students' ?? I overlooked this choice only because of this π

I think the explanantions for 123 are already discussed. For 4th between B&C.; You say the OA is C. To begin an explanation with For is incorrect ? A preposition cannot begin a clause, can it ? And it seeks to explain what has been said earlier , so since seems to be a better choice. Although Yet is more appropriate than 'furthermore', which is probably outdated and obsolete. But it does explain the intent of the statement clearly, for C seems to commit the error of using a preposition ? (Since C commits the error ....)
Or am I missing something ?Does some one have an explanation that could cllearly point out which is the better choice between B & C ?

My take 1. C , 2. D , 3. B , 4. B
In 2, I believe the sentence should have been "the number of students...has"
In 4, although "since" is not much preferred in GMAT, B best expresses the idea
Can someone please explain this....The correct answer is D, I picked E and cant be used in the underlined phrase as the sentence should be structured in a cause-effect manner. and extends what is being said in the first line. yet is a better usage as it denotes a kind of irony, which is the tone of the sentence. furthermore is used when we want to extend a point.
In 2, E is incorrect because it says that "students...have grown". It shouls be the "number of students.....has grown".
In 4, i guess that we arent looking for any irony. The second part should highlight the further issues suffered by the middle class due to increase in rent. I still stand by choce B. Are u sure that the answer is C ?

Because of less availability and greater demand for scientific research, platinum remains consistently expensive, like gold.
(A) Because of less availability and greater demand for scientific research, platinum remains consistently expensive, like gold.
(B) Because of less availability and increased demand for scientific research, platinum remains consistently expensive, like that of gold.
(C) Because of decreased availability and increased demand in scientific research, platinum remains expensive, like gold.
(D) Because of decreased availability and increased demand for scientific research, platinum remains expensive, like gold.
(E) Because of decreased availability and greater demand in scientific research, platinum remains at a consistently high price, like that of gold.
C.. is correct. Decreased availability is better than less availability (less than what?). Similarly Increased demand is better than greater demand.
Also "demand in scintific research' makes the point clear that the demand of platinum has increased. (D) seems to suggest that the demand for scientific research has increased... and not necessarily the demand for platinum. (C) wins
