'less' is better than 'lower' because we are using quantifiable numbers here...1 % is easily countable and thus we wouldnt use lower.
The tense and tone of the sentence makes amounted wrong. We are talking in present continous tense here in the sentence.

Im a little unsure on this though. My reason for picking A is:
'staging' makes choices B & E wrong as we are talking about a past event here.
'Besides' and 'Excepting' makes the other two choices wrong....

The key point here to consider is that we need to use 'yet' to draw a sort of comparison...because first half of sentence talks about how strong,large and bulky was the canoe and second half talks about it being easily maneuvered.
this leaves only two options, C & E
Option C uses 'being' an incorrect form of the verb to be used here. It should be was and thus option E

It should be posted in 'quant' section... anyways.. the answer is B.

X + X *(12/100) = 40.88 .. solving for X --> $36.5

X + X *(18/100) = 40.88 . solving for X --> $34.644

so only B is in between

This is a wrong answer.
The correct answer would be C.
The minimum meal amount will be when when tip is 12%. and hence that will be threshold.
Also , for B - 35.5, the meat tip comes to be 15% which can not be the least because tips of 13% and 14% are also possible.
