options A,E indicate a passive voice and which looks unnecessary, option C doesn't sound right because of the 'it' and option D does not go well with the first half of the sentence.
3.People who inherit the sickle cell anemia gene from only one parent seem to be resistant to malaria, an evolutionary advantage that may explain why a genetic condition so debilitating to many individuals has survived in the human population.

(B) seemingly are resistant to malaria,
(C) seem to be resistant to malaria and have

(E) are, it seems, resistant to malaria, and they have
C,D awkward because of the 'have' and option E is too wordy and in option B seemingly is 'unnecessary'
B seems to be the best answer. In the given underlined portion 'by' is definately not required.
With the use of 'by'the meaning is seriously altered. Also the use of ";" makes it neccessary to have a pause/discontinutiy or two seperate clauses...Read the following to gauge what could the sentence mean if 'y' is used...
"which led to a decline in horse ownership and a subsequent grain glut by persuading people to eat "
This rules out options A & C
option E again changes the sense of the sentence....
in option D, persuasion of people is ungrammatical.....
Thus option B is the answer, which is also by far the most precise and logical choice.
Answer is A
B) Misplaced subject.technique, should immediately follow the phrase ) Originally developed for detecting air pollutants which modifies technique
C) Misplaced modifier which can quickly analyze modifies proton induced x-ray in this option which is wrong
D)Same problem as with C
E) Wordy. Also, uses was and is together..dangling phrase as well.
Answer is A
seemingly is ungrammatical in this sentence..Eliminates options B & D
Option C, when read in complete makes no senseprimarily because of the use of have which is unnecessary
Option E is vague, wordyseems is wrong usage too
--> OA is A.
But I have a doubt in A.
here the usage of 'which' is comes under question. which is used after a noun (emission), so it logically refers to "emission" and not to the preceding clause... i.e "technique....".
I am not convinced about the usage of which in A and that makes me doubtful for A.
Experts, please shed some light.
you are confusing yourself by thinking too much.....read this:
"A person called Ravi Sharma, who is blind, performed at the function."
now, whether you consider 'who' referring to the 'person' or 'Ravi Sharma', it is in effect referring to the same entity......
i hope this helps you :)
may b u r right.
thanx ankit.
Hi Puys,
Please help with the explainations for following SC's. Basically I am confused with the usage of "Just as v/s Like "
1. Dr. Hegsted argues that just as polio vaccine is given to every person to protect the few who might actually contract polio, mass dietary change is needed to protect the significant number who are susceptible to the life-threatening effects of press eating habits.
(A) just as polio vaccine is given to every person to protect the few who might actually contract polio
(B) like polio vaccine, which is given to every person to protect the few who might contract polio
(C) similar to polio vaccine which is given to every person in order to protect the few who might actually contract polio
(D) while, to protect the few who might actually contract polio, polio vaccine is given to every person
(E) similar to the giving of polio vaccine to every person in order to protect the few who might contract polio actually

(B) like the increased speed of a figure skater when her arms are drawn in
(C) like a figure skater who increases speed while spinning with her arms drawn in
(D) just as a spinning figure skater who increases speed by drawing in her arms
(E) just as a spinning figure skater increases speed by drawing in her arms
1: A (Why not B. )
2: E (Why not C.)

According to me its 2
Gryfalcon is singular....so exclude their (3), they (4).
more than seems proper usage than greater than since number of gryfalcon is countable.

Correct answer is 'A' .... This is from GMat Prep 2 ..
Kindly help with the below ...

4) extinction, now with fivefold the numbers they had

3,4 are out as "the gryfalcon" is singular
more than is used for uncountable nouns. number of birds is countable.. so use greater than.. 2 is out
out of 1 and 5 , 5 is more like a run-on sentence.. 1 uses a semicolon to avoid run-on sentence. "its numbers" also clarifies what is greater.
1 is the correct answer
Hi Puys,
Please help with the explainations for following SC's.

1. A is correct as it maintains parallelism
just as polio vaccine is given...mass dietary change is needed
B uses a non-restrictive clause and violates parallelism by comparing "polio vaccine" to "what mass dietary changes does", rather than to "mass dietary changes"
2. E again parallelism is maintained. like is used to compare nouns.. here actions are being compared, so just as is better than like. C compares "spinning figure skater" to an action -"the buildup of ice at the poles and the drop in water levels near the equator speed up the Earth's rotation". So, C is incorrect. Also C changes meaning.. speed increase as she draws her arms in/ by drawing her arms in... not with her arms drawn in already.
btw.. good questions and very reflective of what u will encounter on GMAT.. can u tell the source of these qns.
So when you have "just like" and "just as".. always think "just as".
