GMAT Problem Solving Discussions

I agree with this solution as the mean is 3.5

looks like all junta is busy wid verbal.. this thread has been inactive 4 quite a long time..

well.. try this..

what is the sum of the ten vertex angles in a ten-vertices regular star?
a. 720
b. 1080
c. 1200
d. 1680
e. none of these

Answer is 1080, a star with ten vertices would mean, it is made of two pentagons and hence the answer

ok.. let me increase the difficulty level a bit..

what is the sum of the nine vertex angles in a nine-vertices regular star?
a. 540
b. 720
b. 680
c. 900
e. none of these

i got 900 using a very ugly figure.. wont b able 2 post da figure.. if someone has a good short approach 2 this problem then plz post..

thanks in advance...

The answer is "none of these". Star with nine vertices is nothing but a figure that is something more than octagon. We will try to draw as many triangles possible inside this triangle. so a total of 7 triangles are possible.so 7*180=1260 is the correct answer.

hi fren.. plz review ur solution.. wat u've found out is the sum of the internal angles of a nonagon(nine-sided polygon), not a nine-vertices star.. each internal angle of the star will always b less than the internal angle of the polygon.. for example, take a 5-vertices star n a pentagon 4 easy understanding.. each internal angle of the 5-vertices star will b 36degrees while that of a pentagon will b 108degress(huge difference).. there is no way that internal angle of the nonagon will b equal 2 the internal angle of the star..

trust me.. i have solved this question fully.. i got 900.. n m 99.99% confident of my solution.. but my solution was a bit lengthy n took a little more than 2minutes.. thats y m looking 4 a shorter n better method..

plz try again..
thanks

dare2 why 9 vertices star cannot be 180*(n-2) where n is the number of sides. How can u say that the nine vertices star cannot be a nonagon...i do not get this thru my hard brain.

The answer is 180*(n-2) when you considered the whole polygon. However think of it, a 9 vertex star would be a polygon with more than 9 vertices, because you are thinking of only the edge angles, there are convex angles inside as well :)

So, the answer is not 900. I am not able to figure out the answer yet though.

OMG.. u guys r thinking too much... nine-vertices star cannot be a nonagon (rather it'll b an eighteenagon) because the adjacent vertices are not joined with each other.. take the star independently.. dont connect the vertices and convert it into a nonagon.. my fault.. i shd have provided the figure with this question.. but 1 guy here (chintamani) solved the former question perfectly.. so i felt question is understood..

Not getting time to try this on paper! Will reply once that is done. And that eighteenagon was the point I was trying to make as well

Now, I have doubts on some questions which I am not sure of.
So, here are the questions:

1. A hospital pharmacy charges $0.40 per fluidram of a certain medicine but allows a discount of 15 percent to Medicare patients. How much should the pharmacy charge a Medicare patient for 3 fluidounces of the medicine?(128 fluidrams = 16 fluidounces)

Median = 3

My take on the above set

1. B) 8.16
2. There is some flaw in the Q
3. D)1/2

25% of the numbers are below 2.

So, the first 25% of the numbers are less than 2(because this list will also contain the lowest numbers in the range).
Then, 35% of the numbers are 4 and above meaning the last 35% of the numbers are 4 or above(this would cntain the highest numbers in the range).

The middle 25%-65% would consist of numbers greater than 2 and less than 4 = 3

Hence, 3 would be the median
