Can someone help me with below question?
If 33 x = 7, what is the product of all possible values of x?
1) 1/9
2)1/3
3) 2/3
4) 16/9
5)32/9
Can someone help me with below question?
If 33 x| = 7, what is the product of all possible values of x?
1) 1/9
2)1/3
3) 2/3
4) 16/9
5)32/9
:biggrin:
Herez the solution !!
|3-x = 7/3
3-x = 7/3 or 3-x = -(7/3)
x = 3-7/3 or x = 3 + (7/3)
x = 2/3 or x = 16/3
product of all such x --> (2/3) * (16/3) --> 32/9
(E)
Can someone help me with below question?
If 33 x = 7, what is the product of all possible values of x?
1) 1/9
2)1/3
3) 2/3
4) 16/9
5)32/9
My Answer - E - 32/9
Ok, Jantaaa Here is one question.
What is the greatest prime factor of (4^17 -2^2)
I solved it with below steps:
(4^17 - 2^2 ) = ( 2^38 - 2^2 ) = 2^28 ( 2^10 - 1) = 2^28 ( 1024 -1 ) = 2^28 (1023),
Now, 1023 is divisible by 11 with quotient as 93. So the greatest prime factor is 11.
BUt the answer given is 7.
Please tell me where am I going wrong while solving this question?

1.4^17=2^34 not 2^38
2. I guess the question posted by you is (4^17-2^28 ) not (4^17 -2^2)
Solving the eq 2^28(2^6-1) =2^28(7*9) so ans is 7
Opps,,, these mistakes are gonna blow me up ...
THanks for your explanation...
(see the picture attached for the diagram) What is the ratio of S and s.?
My answer is I and II and here is my approach.
Stat 2: 0 subtract 1 from all three, the statement becomes
-1
Since x is less than zero, and for the statement to hold true y has to be positive. Hence I is true.
We can see above that x/y > -1, hence II is true.
Since -1 => -y => -1/x => 0 Assume x = -2 and y = 3. This statement holds true. Hence III is not true.
Actually, 3 is true. If x = -2 and y = 3, 1/x + 1/y = -(1/2) + (1/3) = -1/6
I disagree with what you have written viz:
Since -1 => -y => -1/x => 0
If we check the original statement, it is clear that x must be -ve and y +ve. So of course, -y

sudip.paul Says(see the picture attached for the diagram) What is the ratio of S and s.?
The two triangles are clearly similar. now we know that in two similar figures, if the ratios of the corresponding sides are a : b, the ratio of areas will be a^2 : b^2. Hence we can say that a^2 : b^2 is 1 : 2 and so a : b has to be 1 : sqrt(2). Hence S = sqrt(2) * s and hence answer (C)

Hi Puys,
This ques was asked by naren_aumech few weeks back (pg 361 of this thread) and the OA was (a)...sorry for bringing this ques again but I cudn't figure out the solu...can someone please help? Thanks!
Here is the ques:
The function F is defined for all positive integers n by the following rule: f(n) is the number of positive integer each of which is less than n, and has no positive factor in common with n other than 1. If p is any prime number then f(p)=
a)p-1
b)p-2
c)(p+1)/2
d)(p-1)/2
e) 2

Answer is A. the factors of any prime number are 1 and the number itself. So according to given definition of f(p), all the number less than the prime number will be the answer i.e. p-1. try for 7,11,13...

let p = 2 , then the number less than 2 is 1.But 1 shouldn't be considered
so f(p) = 0 (p-2)
let p = 3 , then the numbers less than 3 are 1,2 .1 shouldn't be considered
so f(p) = 1 (p-2)
let p = 5 , then the numbers less than 5 are 1,2,3,4 .1 shouldn't be considered so f(p) = 3 (p-2)
let p = 7 , then the numbers less than 7 are 1,2,3,4,5,6 .1 shouldn't be considered so f(p) = 5 (p-2)
so f(p) = 1 (p-2)

Hi,
Can someone pls suggest me a good online resource/pdf for studying P&C; and Probability for the GMAT.I am thinking about studying these topics during my free time in the office.

Given that P is prime so it will have factors only 1 & p, thus all integers in between 1 & p will have factors other than Those of p
Thus such P-2 Integers will exist for any any Prime P

some1 help me wid this question..
(i choosed 1st option, but it was incorrect.... how?? why?? :confused:
Because postage rates are rising, Home Decorator magazine plans to maximize its profits by reducing by one-half the number of issues it publishes each year. The quality of articles, the number of articles published per year and the subscription price will not change. Market research shows that neither subscribers nor advertisers will be lost if the magazine's plan is instituted.
Which of the following, if true, provides the strongest evidence that the magazine's profits are likely to decline if the plan is instituted?
(A) With the new postage rates, a typical issue under the proposed plan would cost about one, third more to mail than a typical current issue would.
(B) The majority of the magazine's subscribers are less concerned about a possible reduction in the quantity of the magazine's articles than about a possible loss of the current high quality of its articles.
(C) Many of the magazine's long-time subscribers would continue their subscriptions even if the subscription price were increased.
(D) Most of the advertisers that purchase advertising space in the magazine will continue to spend the same amount on advertising per issue as they have in the past.
(E) Production costs for the magazine are expected to remain stable.

First of all a correction in grammer....In your post ...you said "Choosed"...There is no such word...The past tense is chose....You should say "I chose the 1st option"
According to me the answer here will be (D)...because if the advertisers rate remain the same and the number of issues decrease in a year, it means the magazine will get far more less revenue through advertisements...and inturn decrease the profits...
(A) cannot be an answer...Explanation: We want to find an evidence such that the profits of the magazine will decrease even though the Plan is instituted...The plan is to decrease cost due to postage..The profits for the magazine will only decrease if they get less income somehow....By the proposed plan since they are decreasing the publishing of the magazine by one-half the postage increases will not matter it.
Any Critical reasoning guru's around...Can you please validate???
thanx.. will b careful 4m now on wid my grammer.. after all it's gmat thread.. :)

answer is infact D.. but gurus how 2 avoid such traps?? in real GMAT i wud've surely gone wid option A.. :(

What you said is absolutely correct.....On the Day in a hurry with time pressure, we may correctly choose the wrong answer

May be carefully eliminating the choices is the best method here....Like the easiest to eliminate were (B), (C) and (E). only confusion was whether the postages will affect more or the subscribers...Obviously advertisements fetch them more income and if that decreases proportionate to the amount in which they have decreased the publishing, it is will decrease the profits...
There might be some other good way to handle this...Lets see if we get any answers.....
Get on with more buddy...Nice way ...helps everybody...

Use Math or Logic. For example, let's evaluate both (A) and (D).
(A) With the new postage rates, a typical issue under the proposed plan would cost about one, third more to mail than a typical current issue would. - Let's assume the postage currently is $3. So, for one issue with the new postage, it will be $3+1/3rd of $3=$4. So, if they send out 12 issues (without change in subscription amount), the postage would be about $48. Instead, they plan to send out only 6 issues, that would amount to $24 which is lesser than what they are spending right now (12*$3=$36). So, this is actually a saving + profit situation for them. So, it cannot be A.
(D) Most of the advertisers that purchase advertising space in the magazine will continue to spend the same amount on advertising per issue as they have in the past. - Do you see the key here? It's per issue. Now, if the number of issues are reduced from 12 to 6. They can generate only half the amount from advertising. Hence, they will incur a loss.
Hope that helps.
