Hi Puys,

This is Kid from Hyderabad. I've registered to take the challenge on MAY 18, 2009. This will be my first attempt & I've already postponed my dates a couple of times due to low verbal scores in practise attempts.
In brief, I've been consistently scoring around 48 - 50 in quant but I'm struggling to score beyond 30 in verbal in all my practise attempts. My target score is 750+, but my verbal skills do not allow me to shatter my target at this point of time. I request all the successful GMAT puys over here to help me in this regard.
I also invite all the guys who are willing to take GMAT in MAY 09 & discuss the strategies/plans to beat this challenge.

Cheers :cheers:

hi
same here. i have also postponed my GMAT exam couple of times due to low verbal scores.currently i am struggling somewhere around score of 25 in verbal and quant is above 45. so we can start discussing verbal stratergies.i was weak in RC,SC,CR.have improved on SC but still lots of work needs to be done on CR and RC. WE can discuss CR and RC study plan.

Well Ashish, I've sorted out a plan on verbal which I'll be trying out for the next 30 days. My accuracy with SC has been around 70% most of the times. So I thought I would improve my accuracy to 80% & I feel that this is the section where I could improve on my speed with minimum effort & can save maximum time. What I mean to say is, I can save almost 1/2 a minute on each SC if I can improve my accuracy on this section. So, on approx. 15 - 16 SCs in the test, I can save around 7 - 8 minutes of time which I can use for RCs & CRs.
While this sounds quite easy, it is important to be aware of what GMAT actually wants to test in this area. Upon research, I figured out that GMAT mostly concentrates on testing 8 typical types of SC. So my plan is to concentrate mostly on these types while skimming over rest of the general grammatical concepts during my preparation.
I sorted out this plan because I feel that I'm pretty slow at reading & comprehending passages. So I thought instead of working on my reading speeds, I would rather focus on my strong areas & thus save time over these areas for the benifit of my weak areas. As you can see this plan may not be applicable to everyone (I'm not sure whether it works for me at least until I try it for the next 1 month).
Hufff...pretty long stuff... Well this is what I have to share at this point of time & I definitely like to hear any1's thoughts on this or additions/amendments. I request all to share their plans too which hopefully would help everyone of us.

Cheers :cheers:

Hi All
There is a lot of gyaan on what to do and what not on another thread 'Low GMAT Scores'. Just check those out

@tank_I,
Thank u very much for ur response. Can u leave a gist of how u managed ur time on RCs & CRs? I mean, with the kind of score u got, U must have been pretty strong in these areas. It will be great if u can share how u handled these sections during ur practise & during the test?

i think we should start solving SC1000 and cr1000 and discuss it out.For SC we will solve 30 questions daily and will discuss it out in which category it falls.

Yup.. i scored 720 in first go.. with a meagre 78 percentile in verbal.. Much of the bad performance was courtsey long science passages tht put me off my timing.. In the 1 month before my next exam.. i made sure to tackle as many tough RC passages as possible.. best resources.. OG 10 (not OG 11) passages.. and LSAT passages..
And I gave a lot more mocks to perfect my exam taking strategy and acquire the required stamina..
For CR... either follow the 7 question strategy as detailed in Kap 800.. or go thru Powerscore CR bible (u will need a good 3-4 days).. both books will help you form the optimal strategy for CR.. Also, if u have already attained 75% + accuracy in CR.. do Kap 800 CR qns.. read the explanations carefully... if possible redo the whole thing after a week... it really helps u reach 90% + level in CR (extremely imp for a good verbal score as CR is clearly the most scoring and least time taking of all verbal sections)

hope this helps...

keep pingin for further queries..

Hi,

I have an MBA from IIM C and want to pursue a PhD in Business Administration. But what I gathered from various sources is that it is very difficult to get a direct PhD admission. It will be simpler to do an MBA from the US and then move on to do a PhD. Can someone offer any helpful advice as to this?

Also, are there any good GMAT counselling centres in Chennai who can help with preparing the application package, etc?

Well they are basically delhi based and they got very positive word of mouth and are known for their ethical standards.
visit the website www.thechopas.com for details

this is the first time I have ever seriously thought of appearing in Gmat. however after the intial analysis I think I am extremely bad on verbal....
quant is also not that gud BUT verbal is very very poor...
guys plz suggest on how to start verbal preps??

@tank_I
thanks for your guidance on how to improve the score.....plz also help on how to start the prep for verbal!!!

@neerajmanit & tranparent:
I see a lot of people (including me) struggling with verbal when it comes to GMAT. So I advice you to start off your preparation with Manhattan SC Guide & practise as many problems as you can in SC, as it is the easiest section where you can improve your scores a lot with a minimum practise.
