I rejected A because the argument does not talk about the customers,B because we do not see any mention of the 3rd competitor, C because of no reference to the country, D because it is too strong statement and arguement does not talk about PERMANENT lowering of price. So my choice was E
Well it is clear that 1st bold statement is one statement in the sequence of events and is clearly not the conclusion. This helps us reject B and D. Again since both the sentences support United Energy so A connot be correct. The statements that follow the 2nd statement are clearly counter premise and are definitely not the conclusion. This helps us conclude that 2nd statement is the conclusion and the 1st one supports it. Hence C
I rejected A because the argument does not talk about the customers,B because we do not see any mention of the 3rd competitor, C because of no reference to the country, D because it is too strong statement and arguement does not talk about PERMANENT lowering of price. So my choice was E

Dear vishal, i adopt a method for critical reasoning questions where i think as a protagonist and that makes the job90%done. i dont see any logic if they had mentioned the third competitor.i think the question clearly starts with the TWO major pda producing companies blah blah . . . .i know it doesn mean that there are just 2 companies producing pdas but here wel take in this way- company X is a major producer of some commodity, there are no companies other than company Y (which also produces the same commodities as X)which can compete with company X! so company x may think that company Y MIGHT attract company x's customers in the near future,in the same way, company y also may think the same! thus in-order to save themselves, those 2 companies might go with merging! ! !so chose with optionB!
I want to see what you are able to see and I am not. I read your answer and went back to the passage but I still couldn;t find support for the 2nd part of option B i.e. "lose market share to a competitor". Can you also explain me why E is wrong

Vishal! ! ! !even i chose the answer in an equivocating way! even i was confused between B and E .as i found B very much appropriate,i find no fault in E too =-O!!! when i introspected ur reasoning when u posted like-"there is no mention of 3rd competitor blah blah",i surmise that u r decieved by the first word "WE"! here, the option B captures the INDIVIDUAL COMPANY'S point of view! that is just a general statement, thats y he has used WE! ! ! for example-there are 2 companies X and Ywho are thinking of merging with each other! individual companyX might think,it is better to earn a low profit than losing the market share to company Y and vice versa! my apologies in advance ,because i know my reasoning is ambiguous ,but i think its right
Although the earliest surviving Greek inscriptions written in an alphabet date from the eighth century B.C., a strong case can be made that the Greeks actually adopted alphabetic writing at least two centuries earlier. Significantly, the 【text of these earliest surviving Greek inscriptions sometimes runs from right to left and sometimes from left to right.' Now, the Greeks learned alphabetic writing from the Phoenicians, and in the process 【they would surely have adopted whatever convention the Phoenicians were then using with respect to the direction of writing.' Originally, Phoenicians writing ran in either direction, but by the eighth century B.C. it had been consistently written from right to left for about two centuries.
In the argument given, the two portions in boldface play which of the following roles?
A. The first provides evidence in support of the position that the argument seeks to establish; the second is that position.
B. The first provides evidence in support of the position that the argument seeks to establish; the second presents an assumption on which that argument relies.
C. The first is an assumption that the argument concludes is unjustified; the second presents part of the grounds for that conclusion.
D. The first is evidence that forms the basis for an objection to the position that the argument seeks to establish; the second is that position.
E. The first is evidence that forms the basis for an objection to the position that the argument
not able to get all the options in my tab!is it option B ?
lthough spraying disinfectant on toys in preschools generally kills most germs that cause illnesses, such as the common cold, many pediatricians no longer recommend this practice. Exposure to germs that cause the common cold and other non-dangerous illnesses helps young children to develop a degree of immunity to fight other, more serious pathogens.
If the statements above are true, which of the following conclusions is most strongly supported by them?
(A) Disinfecting toys for germs can reduce the spread of a variety of communicable diseases among children who attend preschools. (B) Disinfectant can reduce children's immunity to serious illnesses by reducing the chance that children are exposed to germs that cause common illnesses.
(C) Disinfecting toys for the germs that cause the common cold weakens young children's immune systems. (D) The more common cold-causing germs a small child is exposed to, the less severe the common cold will be if the child does contract it. (E) The field of pediatrics is currently focused on limiting young children's exposure to germs, especially germs spread in public places like schools and playgrounds.
Companies considering new cost-cutting manufacturing processes often compare the projected results of making the investment against the alternative of not making the investment with costs, selling prices, and share of market remaining constant. Which of the following, assuming that each is a realistic possibility, constitutes the most serious disadvantage for companies of using the method above for evaluating the financial benefit of new manufacturing processes?
A The costs of materials required by the new process might not be known with certainty. B In several years interest rates might go down, reducing the interest costs of borrowing money to pay for the investment. C Some cost-cutting processes might require such expensive investments that there would be no net gain for many years, until the investment was paid for by savings in the manufacturing process. D Competitors that do invest in a new process might reduce their selling prices and thus take market share away from companies that do not. E The period of year chosen for averaging out the cost of the investment might be somewhat longer or shorter, thus affecting the result.

Again a gud set bro... My take (again confused between 2 options b and d)...had there not been the word "contract" in sentence numbered D, i would have gone with it...so, my take would be B.. CHEERS!!!
The young orchestral conductor Sabado Domingo is a true prodigy, able to recognize when any single instrument in his orchestra is even a bit out of tune. In a recent test, an orchestra played a hundred selections from different well-known classical pieces; in approximately half of the selections, exactly one instrument would be played slightly out of tune. In every instance in which an instrument was played out of tune, Domingo pointed out that the orchestra was out of tune, and correctly identified the instrument at fault.
Which of the following, if true, most strongly supports the conclusion of the argument above? (A)During the test, the orchestra was arranged in a traditional arrangement, similar to the arrangement in which they would be seated in a classical concert. (B)Domingo did not mistakenly label any of the orchestras in-tune performances as out of tune. (C)Many of the musicians who intentionally played out of tune as part of the test have played perfectly in tune in every concert for the last ten years. (D)The instruments played out of tune were all played at a pitch exactly one half-step lower than the true pitch. (E)Because the test was performed in an empty concert hall, the acoustics of the concert hall differed somewhat from those of a concert hall populated by an audience.
Professor Smith published a paper arguing that a chemical found in minute quantities in most drinking water had an adverse effect on the human nervous system. Existing scientific theory held that no such effect was possible because there was no neural mechanism for bringing it about. Several papers by well-known scientists in the field followed, unanimously purporting to prove Professor Smith wrong. This clearly shows that the scientific establishment was threatened by Professor Smith's work and conspired to discredit it. Which one of the following is the central flaw in the argument given by the author of the passage? (A) The author passes over the possibility that Professor Smith had much to gain should Professor Smith's discovery have found general acceptance. (B) The author fails to mention whether or not Professor Smith knew that the existence of the alleged new effect was incompatible with established scientific theory. (C) The author fails to show why the other scientists could not have been presenting evidence in order to establish the truth of the matter. (D) The author neglects to clarify what his or her relationship to Professor Smith is. (E) The author fails to indicate what, if any, effect the publication of Professor Smith's paper had on the public's confidence in the safety of most drinking water.
Governments have only one response to public criticism of socially necessary services: regulation of the activity of providing those services. But governments inevitably make the activity more expensive by regulating it, and that is particularly troublesome in these times of strained financial resources. However, since public criticism of child-care services has undermined all confidence in such services, and since such services are socially necessary, the government is certain to respond. Which one of the following statements can be inferred from the passage? (A) The quality of child care will improve. (B) The cost of providing child-care services will increase. (C) The government will use funding to foster advances in child care. (D) If public criticism of policy is strongly voiced, the government is certain to respond. (E) If child-care services are not regulated, the cost of providing child care will not increase.
Alice: Quotas on automobile imports to the United States should be eliminated. Then domestic producers would have to compete directly with Japanese manufacturers and would be forced to produce higher-quality cars. Such competition would be good for consumers. David: You fail to realize, Alice, that quotas on automobile imports are pervasive worldwide. Since German, Britain, and France have quotas, so should the United States. Which one of the following most accurately characterizes Davids response to Alice's statement? (A) David falsely accuses Alice of contradicting herself. (B) David unfairly directs his argument against Alice personally. (C) David uncovers a hidden assumption underlying Alices position. (D) David takes a position that is similar to the one Alice has taken. (E) David fails to address the reasons Alice cites in favour of her conclusion.
I would go with option E .

1) Ann: All the campers at Camp Winnehatchee go to Tri-Cities High School Bill: Thats not true. Some Tri-Cities students are campers at Camp Lakemont. Bills answer can be best explained on the assumption that he has interpreted Anns remark to mean that (A) most of the campers at Camp Lakemont come from high schools other than Tri-Cities (B) most Tri-Cities High School students are campers at Camp Winnehatchee (C) some Tri-Cities High School students have withdrawn from Camp Lakemont (D) all Tri-Cities High School students have withdrawn from Camp Lakemont (E) only campers at Camp Winnehatchee are students at Tri-Cities High School
2) Dried grass clippings mixed into garden soil gradually decompose, providing nutrients for beneficial soil bacteria. This results in better-than-average plant growth. Yet mixing fresh grass clippings into garden soil usually causes poorer-than-average plant growth. Which one of the following, if true, most helps to explain the difference in plant growth described above? (A) The number of beneficial soil bacteria increases whenever any kind of plant material is mixed into garden soil. (B) Nutrients released by dried grass clippings are immediately available to beneficial soil bacteria (C) Some dried grass clippings retain nutrients originally derived from commercial lawn fertilizers, and thus provide additional enrichment to the soil. (D) Fresh grass clippings mixed into soil decompose rapidly, generating high levels of heat that kill beneficial soil bacteria. (E) When a mix of fresh and dried grass clippings is mixed into garden soil, plant growth often decreases.
My take : 1)e , bills argument provided example of campers that do not go to that specific high school, hence he must be misunderstanding Ann's argument that all students of the particular high school go to that camp. 2)d, only this option resolves the paradox.

Noting that the number of crimes committed in a certain city had decreased in 1982 by 5.2 percent in comparison with 1981, the police chief of the city said, "We see here the result of the innovative police program put into effect in the city at the beginning of 1982." Which of the following, if true, most seriously weakens the conclusion drawn by the police chief?
a. Several cities that have recently increased spending for police programs experienced no decrease in crime in 1982, as compared with 1981 b. The number of crimes committed in the suburban areas surrounding the city rose by about 5 percent in 1982 over the figure for 1981 and were nearly equal in number to those in the city in 1982 c. The number of crimes committed in the city in 1982 was 10 percent higher than the number committed in 1972 d. The size of the age-group most likely to commit crimes decreased considerably in the city in 1982, as against 1981, because of a declining birth rate
Many buyers of fashion clothing are inclined to contribute to charitable organizations, and are more likely to purchase clothing from companies that donate a portion of their profits to charity. Next weekend, a variety of fashion clothing retailers will hold sample sales at a downtown event; the events organizers plan to hand out flyers listing which of the retailers donate to charity from their profits, in the hope of increasing those companies sales at the event.
Which of the following, if true, most calls into question the appropriateness of the organizers plan?
The cost to the organizers of designing and printing the flyers is equivalent to half an average days worth of sample-sale profits for one of the retailers at the event.
Many of the retailers who donate profits to charity do so in order to garner tax breaks, rather than for purely altruistic reasons.
Among the retailers who will hold sample sales at next weeks event, those that donate a portion of their profits to charity far outnumber those that do not.
Of the retailers at the event that donate a portion of their profits to charity, most have publicized those donations extensively in their advertising.
Many of the retailers who donate a portion of their profits to charity vary that portion from season to season, allocating a greater portion of their profits to charity during peak sales seasons.
I will go with option C.If almost all the retailers are willing give donations, the purpose of flyers is defeated since the flyers cannot serve to increase the sales of all stores in the event.

I will go with option D..since most of those who share their profits in charity have already advertised extensively...there is no further need of bringing out the flyers...i think so....!!
