Nutritionist: Because humans have evolved very little since the development of agriculture,
it is clear that humans are still biologically adapted to a diet of wild foods, consisting
mainly of raw fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds, lean meat, and seafood. Straying from
this diet has often resulted in chronic illness and other physical problems. Thus, the more our
diet consists of wild foods, the healthier we will be. The boldface portion plays which one of
the following roles in the argument?
A) It is a conclusion for which the only support offered is the claim that straying from a diet of
wild foods has often resulted in chronic illness and other physical problems.
b) It is a premise for which no justification is provided, but which is used to support the
arguments main conclusion.
c) It is a phenomenon for which the main conclusion of the nutritionists argument is cited as
an explanation.
d) It is an intermediate conclusion for which one claim is offered as support, and which is used
in turn to support the arguments main conclusion.
e) It is a premise offered in support of the claim that humans have evolved very little since the
development of agriculture.

In one state, all cities and most towns have antismoking ordinances. A petition entitled "Petition for Statewide Smoking Restriction" is being circulated to voters by campaign workers who ask only, "Do you want to sign a petition for statewide smoking restriction?" The petition advocates a state law banning smoking in most retail establishments and in government offices that are open to the public.

Which of the following circumstances would make the petition as circulated misleading to voters who understand the proposal as extending the local ordinances statewide?

A. Health costs associated with smoking cause health insurance premiums to rise for everyone and so affect nonsmokers.

B. In rural areas of the state, there are relatively few retail establishments and government offices that are open to the public.

C. The state law would supersede the local antismoking ordinances, which contain stronger bans than the state law does.

D. There is considerable sentiment among voters in most areas of the state for restriction of smoking.

E. The state law would not affect existing local ordinances banning smoking in places where the fire authorities have determined that smoking would constitute a fire hazard.

its option c

The average life expectancy for the United States population as a whole is 73.9 years, but children born in
Hawaii will live an average of 77 years, and those born in Louisiana, 71.7 years. If a newlywed couple from
Louisiana were to begin their family in Hawaii, therefore, their children would be expected to live longer than
would be the case if the family remained in Louisiana.
Which of the following statements, if true, would most significantly strengthen the conclusion drawn in the
passage?
A. As population density increases in Hawaii, life expectancy figures for that state are likely to be revised
downward.
B. Environmental factors tending to favor longevity are abundant in Hawaii and less numerous in Louisiana.
C. Twenty-five percent of all Louisianans who move to Hawaii live longer than 77 years.
D. Over the last decade, average life expectancy has risen at a higher rate for Louisianans than for Hawaiians.
E. Studies show that the average life expectancy for Hawaiians who move permanently to Louisiana is roughly
equal to that of Hawaiians who remain in Hawaii.

Studies show that children who watch too much television are more likely than others to become obese as adults. Jacob, who is an obese adult, must have watched more television as a child than I did, since I am not obese.

Which of the following most closely parallels the logical structure above?

(A) The hardware store on Main Street must have had a bigger advertisement in the Sunday paper than the hardware store around the corner had. The hardware store on Main Street sold twice as many items as the hardware store around the corner did last week, and a Sunday paper advertisement has been shown to increase the number of items sold.
(B) Studies show that large dogs lives shorter lives, on average, than small dogs do. Rex is a large dog and therefore might be expected to live a shorter life than Mustang, who is a small dog.
(C) The county superintendent stated that all schools would be canceled for the day if snowfall last night were greater than six inches. Therefore, since the snowfall was only five inches, we must be following the usual school schedule today.
(D) According to research, people with unusual musical talent do not achieve their true potential unless they are given formal lessons. Therefore Jesse, who has achieved his full musical potential without formal lessons must not have unusual musical talent.
(E) People who like vegetables also like fruits. Elizabeth does not like fruits, so she must not like vegetables either.

Hi Prakhar,

Your answer is correct and apologies for posting this question. Some how I have been reading option E incorrectly. I thought E meant that the life expectancy of Louisianaians who move to Hawaii is the same as that of Hawaiians.

Which of the flowing most logically completes the argument?
The attribution of the choral work Lacrimae to the composer Pescard (1400 - 1474) has been regarded as tentative, since it was based on a single treatise from the early 1500s that named Pescard as the composer. Recently, several musical treatises from the late 1500s have come to light, all of which name Pescard as the composer of Lacrimae. Unfortunately, these newly discovered treatises lend no support to the attribution of Lacrimae to Pescard, since _______.

A. the treatise from the early 1500s misidentifies the composers of some of the
musical works it considers
B. the author of the treatise from the early 1500s had no very strong evidence on
which to base the identification of Pescard as the composer of Lacrimae
C. there are works that can conclusively be attributed to Pescard that are not even
mentioned in the treatise from the early 1500s
D. the later treatises probably had no source for their attribution other than the earlier
treatise
E. no known treatises from the 1600s identify Pescard as the composer of Lacrimae

A tough one,
My take is option A.

The Montridge Town Council has just voted to increase the local tax rate on all new commercial businesses within the towns border. The council believes that if it acts to keep the town as residential as possible, the town will attract wealthier people who will gravitate toward the towns charm and will not complain about an increase in property taxes.

Which of the following best expresses the logical pattern underlying the Montridge Town Councils recent decision?

It rationalized that a drop in revenue from one source would ultimately be offset by an increase from another source.
It establishes its distaste for commercial activity within Montridge.
It questioned the assumption that all commercial businesses would react to the tax hike by leaving town.
It believes that in order to achieve goals, they must be prioritized.
It weighed several options and chose the one that it believe would result in the least collateral damage

A nutritionist studying the effects of massive doses of vitamin C found that of a group of 600 people who regularly took 1,500 mg of vitamin C daily for a year, fewer than 9 percent suffered serious cases of flu; of a group of 600 people who took 250 mg of vitamin C (the standard recommended daily allowance) daily for a year, 34 percent suffered at least one serious case of flu; and of a group of 600 people who took no vitamin C for a year (other than that found in the foods in a balanced diet), 32 percent suffered at least one serious case of flu.
Which of the following hypotheses is best supported by the evidence above?
(A) The effectiveness of vitamin C in preventing serious cases of flu increases in direct proportion to the amount of vitamin C taken.
(B) Vitamin C is helpful in preventing disease.
(C) Doses of vitamin C that exceed the standard recommended daily allowance by 500 percent will reduce the incidence of serious cases of flu by 25 percent.
(D) Massive doses of vitamin C can help to prevent serious case of flu.
(E) A balanced diet contains less than 250 mg of vitamin C.

Merger Analyst: Two long-time competitors, manufacturers of personal digital assistants- better known simply as PDAs-have agreed to merge their companies. The main purpose of the merger, put forth by outside analysts, would be to collaborate on the development of a PDA redesign that will allow the new merged company to manufacture PDAs at a lower cost.

Although the post-merger retail price, to be agreed on by the companies, will likely cut into the new companys overall profit margins, it will also eliminate the competition between these companies, two of the worlds largest PDA manufacturers.

Given the above, which of the following statements, if true, as made by the president of one of the two companies, best illustrates the probable thinking behind the merger?
A. By combining forces we will ensure that consumers pay the lowest possible cost for the next generation of Personal Digital Assistants.
B. We would rather secure relatively lower PDA profits than lose market share to a competitor.
C. Combining forces will be beneficial to the business climate in this country by setting a model of collaboration and goodwill as opposed to fostering the current competitive environment existing in the PDA industry.
D. The best way to permanently lower the retail price of PDAs is to eliminate our most formidable competition.
E. Although long-term PDA retail costs may rise, our next generation of PDAs will decrease in retail cost.
