Businesses are suffering because of a lack of money available for development loans. To help businesses, the government plans to modify the income-tax structure in order to induce individual taxpayers to put a larger portion of their incomes into retirement savings accounts, because as more money is deposited in such accounts, more money becomes available to borrowers.
Which of the following, if true, raises the most serious doubt regarding the effectiveness of the governments plan to increase the amount of money available for development loans for businesses?
(A) When levels of personal retirement savings increase, consumer borrowing always increases correspondingly. (B) The increased tax revenue the government would receive as a result of business expansion would not offset the loss in revenue from personal income taxes during the first year of the plan. (C) Even with tax incentives, some people will choose not to increase their levels of retirement savings. (D) Bankers generally will not continue to lend money to businesses whose prospective earnings are insufficient to meet their loan repayment schedules. (E) The modified tax structure would give all taxpayers, regardless of their incomes, the same tax savings for a given increase in their retirement savings.
Confused between C and D C is dubious because of "SOME" people, but not MANY/ALL people would choose not increase their levels of retirement savings.
D : The Govt's plan is considering only one side of th story - accumulating money in accounts...the other side will banks be ready to offer loans for business expansion if the businesses whose prospective earnings are insufficient to meet their loan repayment schedules. If (D) is true, then although money is present, companies can't avail them. So going with (D)
Dude first of all decrease your font its pretty rude and for that even i can revert back with bigger font than you posted but again stop behaving kiddish behaviour and you ought to respect the one who posted such Qs.as for your books sources well i am sure that these are not taken from OGs.also it has been taklen from one of the practice sessions where there are several reasons, even kaplan mentors also have argued with this over why D is selected as option.option E is totally illogical..this has been one of the questions in 1000 CR also and there are some errors in that also even the awners provided by them is not 100% authentic.stop putting wrong blame one me getting people misguided
Cognizant_81: Please be aware that everyone on this forum respects you for posting so many questions, there is no denying that fact !
The only thing that you need to change is your explanations and reasons. Just saying that an answer is "totally illogical" does not make it so. Everybody on this forum is here to learn and understand the reasoning behind the answers.
Give your proper reasoning in legible and understable form and be open to criticism as well. It could be possible that whatever answers you have might be wrong, please do not think that whatever answers have been provided to you by your "Kaplan Mentors" are all correct. There might be mistakes from their end as well. When you see a different answer, instead of ignoring that downright, you need to analyze why that answer is being chosen, not term it "illogical".
The forum is here to provide learning opportunities to all, please do not undermine that role by providing incomprehensible and vague answers.
And please do not go back to saying that OG can be incorrect as well, we all know that is not the way you should analyze OG questions. It is the bible and needs to be treated with utmost respect.

The gray squirrel, introduced into local woodlands ten years ago, threatens the indigenous population of an endangered owl species, because the squirrels habitual stripping of tree bark destroys the trees in which the owls nest. Some local officials have advocated setting out poison for the gray squirrels. The officials argue that this measure, while eliminating the squirrels, would pose no threat to the owl population, since the poison would be placed in containers accessible only to squirrels and other rodents.
Which one of the following, if true, most calls into question the officials argument?
(A) One of the species whose members are likely to eat the poison is the red squirrel, a species on which owls do not prey. (B) The owls whose nesting sites are currently being destroyed by the gray squirrels feed primarily on rodents. (C) No indigenous population of any other bind species apart from the endangered owls is threatened by the gray squirrels. (D) The owls that tare threatened build their nests in the tops of trees, but the gray squirrels strip away back from the trunks. (E) The officials plan entails adding the poison to food sources that are usually eaten by rodents but not by other animals.
Is there a full proof way which can, to a certain extent, guarantee good results in CR
Is there some collection of a huge set of CR questions and their correct answers which can help me do quality practice
Please help Saket as CR tricks keep slipping of my head after every few days and I want to have enough practice to keep them up there :)
Regards, Vishal
Hey Vishal -- I understand your situation. But, I would like to highlight a point that there are no shortcuts. If you say you want a material which can guarantee good results in CR then I am sorry to say that there is nothing of that sort. GMAT official guide is the best or may I say the bestest source to practice CR or for that matter any GMAT related question. But, even they do no use the word 'GUARANTEE' to raise your score. The best you can do is to practice hard and make a error log -- something in an excel. Keep reviewing your wrong and in some cases correct answer which you got correct by fluke. Practice -- Review-- Practice.
Also, if you want a great, excellent and awesome source to practice CR questions then first finish the OG and then visit this forum-- this is a highly rated forum exclusivly made for GMAT The Beat The GMAT Forum - Expert GMAT Help & MBA Admissions Advice. You will find world's best experts answering your questions almost immediately.
PS: you can find me there as well with the username - saketk PPS: the trick is to follow the experts by clicking on 'Follow' button. You will get to know their comments/insights/views daily. I think that is all you need. All the best.
PPS: stay away from people who say that they can guarantee you high score. no one would have got a lower score if anything of that sort ever existed.
Questioning the OG...NO NO NO :nono::nono::nono: Well if you choose to, do so at your own peril. It is the BIBLE, and mere mortals do not question the Bible. At least I wont !!
believe bible then at your own peril then and let the logic prevail forever!ultimately logic wins!

OG diagonistic test has some Qs with such ambiguity which has been later rectified unfortunately not uploaded in google one of them being this after sufficent discussion and reasoning OA cant be 'A'.it look alike awnser but its not awnser actually its atrap.
@sausi, dude these OAs are officially given by kaplan mentors during sectional tests conducted in kaplan CR sessions.no ambiguity regarding OA!! check out the reasoning given below. if
Cheever College offers several online courses via remote computer connection, in addition to traditional classroom-based courses. A study of student performance at Cheever found that, overall, the average student grade for online courses matched that for classroom-based courses. In this calculation of the average grade, course withdrawals were weighted as equivalent to a course failure, and the rate of withdrawal was much lower for students enrolled in classroom-based courses than for students enrolled in online courses. If the statements above are true, which of the following must also be true of Cheever College? (A) Among students who did not withdraw, students enrolled in online courses got higher grades, on average, than students enrolled in classroom-based courses.not necessarily to be true check in the stem question average grade and rate of withdrawal itself doesnt determine number of student that is common trap in GMAT CR Qs (C) There are no students who take both an online and a classroom-based course in the same school term. negate this statement the conclusion of above comparison of classroom students and online students falls apart thus this option quite logical!
@SAUSI007 The only thing that you need to change is your explanations and reasons. Just saying that an answer is "totally illogical" does not make it so. Everybody on this forum is here to learn and understand the reasoning behind the answers.
ihave already provided the reasoning for the Q which was debatable. only thing required is have some patience and check back you will find in my previous posts.also one doesnt come up with awnsers just fortnightly its been discussed after proper reasoning and analysis so the awnsers come up which is logically correct in general.
And please do not go back to saying that OG can be incorrect as well, we all know that is not the way you should analyze OG questions. It is the bible and needs to be treated with utmost respect. did i mention in my last post are OG awnsers are incorrect??? there may be fallacy but 99.99% its flawless! check my post just dont type anything for the sake of typing check doubly before you post and beware of blaming me with false acquisitions.... P.S- if you point 1 finger towards me rest 4 will point towards you!
Sorry puys for this long post with Quotes, but could not help but dig up the details for Mr Cognizant.
Now, what do you have to say when I give you your own posts where you have illogically questioned OG just because your so called "Kaplan Mentors" said so. I would prefer if you could ask at least one of them to join PG as a consultant and post their opinions. I am pretty sure they would like themselves to be left out just because of the illogicality of your reasonings.
Re-read the explanations that you provide on dubious questions, at least I cannot comprehend whatever your intent of the explanations are.
I am not here to point fingers or pass judgements on anyone, I am already done with my GMAT and I frequent the forums just to help other puys. I dont know when you intend to give the GMAT but I can see that you have been here for quite some time.
I checked your post on the said question and I believe that your logic defies logic itself. My post was more generic and not pointed at just this instance.
I re-iterate, Everyone appreciates your commitment to provide puys with so many questions from various sources. Dont undermine the credibility that you have earned over a period of time by providing vague and incomprehensible explanations.

Thanks for the valuable advice saket. I intend to have the following strategy and want to know if this is a good way to go about CR of GMAT
I have started to go through the questions posted in this thread and I am tying to gauge the thought process while answering different type of CR questions.
I am following you and everyone you follow on beatthegmat. I assume, they would definitely be worth following π .
I have gone through manhattan's book on CR and I am tying the concepts learned from that book on the questions posted here.
Is this plan flawed. What CONCLUSION can you draw from the above statements :)
In a study of factors affecting employee satisfaction , investigators polled staff at eight companies with over $100 million in revenues and benefits including flexible schedules and on-site daycare. The investigators found that overall satisfaction levels at the companies were high, that the companies enjoyed profit margins averaging over 20% over the last five years, and that the rates of employee departures at these companies had varied between 1% and 5% over this period.
Which of the following conclusions may be drawn from the information above?
(A) Flexible schedules and daycare are important benefits for raising overall levels of employee satisfaction. (B) High profitability levels for companies with revenues over $100 million are most likely the result of high employee satisfaction levels. (C) Companies without daycare and flexible-schedule benefits have higher rates of employee departures than do those with these benefits. (D) At least 95% of employees will stay for at least one year at some companies with daycare benefits. (E) More companies have recently begun offering daycare and flexible schedule benefits to attract potential employees who are also parents.
Any serious policy discussion about acceptable levels of risk in connection with explosions is not well served if the participants fail to use the word explosion and use the phrase energetic disassembly instead. In fact, the word explosion elicits desirable reactions, such as a heightened level of attention, whereas the substitute phrase does not. Therefore, of the two terms, explosion is the one that should be used throughout discussions of this sort. Which of the following is an assumption on which the argument above depends? (A) In the kind of discussion at issue, the advantages of desirable reactions to the term explosion outweigh the drawbacks, if any, arising from undesirable reactions to that term. (B) The phrase energetic disassembly has not so far been used as a substitute for the word explosion in the kind of discussion at issue. (C) In any serious policy discussion, what is said by the participants is more important than how it is put into words. (D) The only reason that people would have for using energetic disassembly in place of explosion is to render impossible any serious policy discussion concerning explosions. (E) The phrase energetic disassembly is not necessarily out of place in describing a controlled rather than an accidental explosion
Country X imposes heavy tariffs on imported manufactured goods. Company Y has determined that it could increase its profits in the long term by opening a factory in Country X to manufacture the goods that it currently produces in its home country for sale in Country X. For Company Ys determination to be true, which of the following assumptions must also be true? Company Y will be able to obtain all the necessary permits to open a factory in Country X. Company Y currently produces no goods outside its home country. A sustainable market for Company Ys goods currently exists in Country X. Company Ys home country does not impose tariffs on imported goods. Labor costs in Country X are lower than those in Company Ys home country.
il go with option C even though option E is a tempting one!
The study of foreign languages is finally becoming a serious endeavor in U.S. education. The number of American college students enrolled in non-English language courses has increased by 20 percent over the last five years. Spanish, with over 500,000 students, is the most popular; its enrollment has increased by 30 percent. Meanwhile, enrollment in Japanese and Russian has nearly doubled, and now comprises eight percent of total foreign language study. Clearly there is now an increased interest in foreign language study. When these students join the work force, they will enhance not only U.S. businesses ability to compete internationally but also our countrys reputation abroad. The answer to which of the following questions would be LEAST relevant to evaluating the above claims? (A)Do students enrolled in foreign language classes continue their studies long enough to attain competence in those languages? (B)By what percentage has overall enrollment in U.S. colleges and universities increased over the past five years? (C)Does a significant number of students of foreign languages go into professions in which the ability to speak other languages is useful? (D)Has the study of dead languages like Latin and Ancient Greek increased at a similar rate to that of modern languages? (E)How does the percentage increase in foreign language enrollment over the past five years compare to previous increases in enrollment?

A study followed a group of teenagers who had never smoked and tracked whether they took up smoking and how their mental health changed. After one year, the incidence of depression among those who had taken up smoking was four times as high as it was among those who had not. Since nicotine in cigarettes changes brain chemistry, perhaps thereby affecting mood, it is likely that smoking contributes to depression in teenagers.
Which of the following, if true, most strengthens the argument?
A. Participants who were depressed at the start of the study were no more likely to be smokers after one year than those who were not depressed.
B. The study did not distinguish between participants who smoked only occasionally and those who were heavy smokers.
C. Few, if any, of the participants in the study were friends or relatives of other participants.
D. Some participants entered and emerged from a period of depression within the year of the study.
E. The researchers did not track use of alcohol by the teenagers.
The below question has been discussed in this forum before but I was not convinced with the explanation. Please help
You won't find many big companies on the "fastest growing" list. That's not surprising - the unwritten law says that all companies slow down as they get big. But you can still drive pockets of outrageous growth at your old-line company. In his new book, Hamel shows how the best companies transform themselves into "gray-haired revolutionaries". For a company to qualify for the title suggested by the author, which of the following would need to be true? (A)The company tends to have older managers in the higher echelons of the company. (B)The company has, over the last two decades acquired numerous patents. (C)The company has a consistent track record of being able to deliver quality even in the face of stringent difficulty. (D)The company is a huge corporation that owes its decades of success to its founder who was a revolutionary thinker. (E)The company deals in products that are always susceptible to being outclassed by recent innovations.

I have a few more. I want to understand the justifications because I have strong reasons to reject the choices given as answers
Below is an excerpt from a letter that was sent by the chairman of a corporation to the stockholders. A number of charges have been raised against me, some serious, some trivial. Individuals seeking to control the corporation for their own purposes have demanded my resignation.
Remember that no court of law in any state has found me guilty of any criminal offense whatsoever. In the American tradition, as you know, an individual is considered innocent
until proven guilty. Furthermore, as the corporation's unbroken six-year record of growth will show, my conduct of my official duties as chairman has only helped enhance the
success of the corporation, and so benefited every stockholder. Which of the following can be properly inferred from the excerpt? (A) The chairman believes that all those who have demanded his resignation are motivated by desire to control the corporation for their own purposes. (B) Any misdeeds that the chairman may have committed were motivated by his desire to enhance the success of the corporation. (C) The chairman is innocent of any criminal offense. (D) The corporation has expanded steadily over the past six years. (E) Any legal proceedings against the chairman have resulted in his acquittal.

Now according to the choices I would go for option B. As the author states that he is innocent of a criminal offense. Couple that with the last line states "my conduct of my official duties as chairman has only helped enhance the success of the corporation, and so benefited every stockholder". Which makes me infer that some sort of wrong doing but not bound by law. So option B states there might be a misdeed but done by a need for profit. I thin I can even get to B by a process of elimination.

But kshitij, the author says that he has not been found guilty yet, it could mean that there are certain cases in which the trial is still underway. So we cannot assume him to be innocent
Again the author writes that the company has progressed under his leadership but the initial part of the paragraph does not say that the charges against him were official in nature. I dont know if we can make an assumption that the charges leveled against him were related to official misconduct.
In any case the answer does not match with what I found in the post
