1) Determining the authenticity of purported pre-Columbian artifacts is never easy. Carbon-14 dating of these artifacts is often impossible due to contamination by radioactive palladium (which occurs naturally in the soils of Central and South America). However, historians and anthropologists have evolved two reliable criteria, which, utilized in combination, have proven effective for dating these artifacts. First, because authentic pre-Columbian artifacts characteristically occur in a coarse, granular matrix that is shifted by major earthquakes, they often exhibit the unique scratch patterns known as gridding. In addition, true pre-Columbian artifacts show a darkening in surface color that is caused by centuries of exposure to the minute amounts of magnesium in the soil of the Americas. The criteria above would be LEAST useful in judging the authenticity of which of the following? The artifacts that are found buried can be evaluated using the technique. Therefore an artificact not obtained from an underground/burial site is least likely to be properly evaluated. (A) An ax head of black obsidian, unearthed from a kitchen midden (B) A pottery bowl with a red ocher design, found in the ruins of a temple (C) A set of gold ear weights, ornamented with jasper pendants (based on the reasoning given above in red) correct choice. (D) A black feather cape from a kings burial vault (E) A multicolored woven sash found near the gravesite of a slave 2 Questions-2,3 on this CR para From time to time, the press indulges in outbursts of indignation over the use of false or misleading information by the U.S. government in support of its policies and programs. No one endorses needless deception. But consider this historical analogy. It is known that Christopher Columbus, on his first voyage to the New World, deliberately falsified the log to show a shorter sailing distance for each day out than the ships had actually traveled. In this way, Columbus was able to convince his skeptical sailors that they had not sailed past the point at which they expected to find the shores of India. Without this deception, Columbuss sailors might well have mutinied, and the New World might never have been discovered. 2) The author of the passage above assumes each of the following EXCEPT: (A) Government deception of the press is often motivated by worthy objectives. (B) Without government deception, popular support for worthwhile government policies and programs might well fade. (C) Attacks on the government by the press are often politically motivated. (D) Deception for deceptions sake should not be condoned. (E) A greater good may sometimes require acceptance of a lesser evil. 3)Which of the following is the main weakness of the historical analogy drawn in the passage above? The weakness is revealed by something that challenges the conclusion falsifying the reports is good. (A) The sailors in Columbuss crew never knew that they had been deceived, while government deception is generally uncovered by the press. . - Does not challenge the conclusion. (B) A ships log is a record intended mainly for use by the captain, while press reports are generally disseminated for use by the public at large. Correct. (C) The members of a ships crew are selected by the captain of the ship, while those who work in the press are self-selected. . - Does not challenge the conclusion. (D) The crew of a ship is responsible for the success of a voyage, while the press is not responsible for the use others make of the factual information it publishes. - Does not challenge the conclusion. (E) In a democracy, the people are expected to participate in the nations political decision making, while the members of a ships crew are expected simply to obey the orders of the captain. - Does not talk about the reports- out of scope. 4) Contrary to the statements of labor leaders, the central economic problem facing America today is not the distribution of wealth. It is productivity. With the productivity of U.S. industry stagnant, or even declining slightly, the economic pie is no longer growing. Labor leaders, of course, point to what they consider an unfair distribution of the slices of pie to justify their demands for further increases in wages and benefits. And in the past, when the pie was still growing, management could afford to acquiesce. No longer. Until productivity resumes its growth, there can be no justification for further increases in the compensation of workers. Which of the following statements by a labor leader focuses on the logical weakness in the argument above? The logical weakness is can be shown if it is shown that Labor leaders wages (cause) and Economic stagnation (effect) are not related. (A) Although the economic pie is no longer growing, the portion of the pie allocated to American workers remains unjustly small. Incorrect- Supports the labor leaders claims. (B) If management fails to accommodate the demands of workers, labor leaders will be forced to call strikes that will cripple the operation of industry. Incorrect- the argument does not say so. (C) Although productivity is stagnant, the U.S. population is growing, so that the absolute size of the economic pie continues to grow as well. Incorrect- the argument does not say so. (D) As a labor leader, I can be concerned only with the needs of working people, not with the problems faced by management. Incorrect- the argument does not say so. (E) The stagnation of U.S. industry has been caused largely by factorssuch as foreign competitionbeyond the control of American workers. Correct This says the labor/workers cannot control the economy. Questions 5-6 are based on the following. Although its purpose is laudable, the exclusionary rule, which forbids a court to consider evidence seized in violation of the defendants constitutional rights, has unduly hampered law-enforcement efforts. Even when the rights violation was a minor or purely technical one, turning on a detail of procedure rather than on the abrogation of some fundamental liberty, and even when it has been clear that the police officers were acting in good faith, the evidence obtained has been considered tainted under this rule and may not even by introduced. In consequence, defendants who were undoubtedly guilty have been set free, perhaps to steal, rape, or murder again. 5) The author of the passage above assumes all of the following EXCEPT: (A) The constitutional rights of criminal defendants should be protected. Yes the argument suggests so Although its purpose is laudable (B) Most cases in which the exclusionary rule has been invoked have involved purely technical violations of constitutional principles. Yes the argument says so. Keywords purely technical one (C) The number of cases whose outcome has been affected by the exclusionary rule is significant. The argument does not say so. Correct choice. (D) Some of the defendants set free under the exclusionary rule have been guilty of serious criminal offenses. Yes the argument says so. (A) Change of the exclusionary rule to admit evidence obtained by police officers acting in good faith Correct choice. and even when it has been clear that the police officers were acting in good faith, The tone tells us the authors supports this explicitly. (B) A constitutional amendment curtailing some of the protections traditionally afforded those accused of a crime Not true (C) A statute limiting the application of the exclusionary rule to cases involving minor criminal offenses Not true (D) Change of the exclusionary rule to allow any evidence, no matter how obtained, to be introduced in court Not true (Extreme) (E) A constitutional amendment allowing police officers to obtain vital evidence by anymeans necessary when in pursuit of a known criminal Not true (Extreme)

Captain does not have to tell the crew why he is making the decision whereas the Govt should since its a democracy. That is the failure of the analogy.

Gail and Kush...good reasons. You both got most of the things right.
1)On a recent expedition to a remote region of northern Canada, scientists uncovered skeletal remains from about 100,000 years ago. Surprisingly, all the skeletal remains, which included many species from differing biological families and spanned about two thousand years, showed evidence of experiencing temperatures in excess of 1000 degrees Fahrenheit (or 538 degrees Celsius). Which of the following, if true, best explains the apparent paradox between the cold environment and the evidence of the bones experiencing hot temperatures? A)Other scientific research released two years before the expedition showed that the remote region of northern Canada underwent considerable warming in the past 100,000 years. B)Chemical changes that naturally occur during the process of decay in only one north Canadian species produce the same evidence of the species' skeletons being exposed to hot temperatures as the expedition scientists found. C)A little over 103,000 years ago, a large fire is known to have occurred in northern Canada. D)Strong evidence exists that as early as 70,000 years ago, Homo sapiens around the world relied heavily on fire to cook animals. E)In the same expedition and in roughly the same layer of excavation, scientists found rudimentary wood cutting and hunting tools used by early humans.
2)Based upon the results of a recent study, the net value of assets held by young adults or for the benefit of young adults exceeds the net value of assets held by middle-age working professionals with children. The common notion that young adults or so-called "twenty somethings" are bigger spenders and smaller savers than middle-age adults is, therefore, false. The argument is primarily flawed for which of the following reasons? A)The argument does not properly consider the impact of the debt financing of assets. B)The argument never discusses the effects of filing for bankruptcy and twenty somethings' proclivity for deficit spending leading to bankruptcy. C)The argument never discusses the role that the country's tax code, which encourages financial investment on the part of twenty somethings, plays. D)The argument does not specify the exact amounts of saving and spending on the part of each age group. E)The argument never considers that the study compares assets held both by or for the benefit of young adults with assets held by working adults.

All - Questions, answers and explanations.
The paradox: Northern Canada is quite cold and yet skeletal remains show evidence of experiencing very hot temperatures. This paradox could be explained by finding evidence that fires regularly occurred that would have subjected the bones to excruciatingly hot temperatures. If evidence existed that early humans from this time period hunted animals and started fires (implicitly for the purpose of cooking the animals--thereby creating skeletons of animals that experienced hot temperatures), a large step in explaining the paradox would be taken.
A) Unraveling the paradox depends on providing an explanation of how the skeletal remains experienced such hot temperatures yet this answer only heightens the paradox as it provides evidence that the skeletons' environment was much colder (not warmer) many years ago. B)Although this provides an explanation of how "exactly one north Canadian species'" skeletons showed evidence of exposure to hot temperatures, it fails to account for why "many species from differing biological families spanned about two thousand years showed" the same evidence of exposure to hot temperatures. C)This answer provides an explanation for skeletons showing evidence of experiencing hot temperatures. However, this answer does not explain why this evidence appeared among skeletons whose date "spanned about two thousand years." Further, the fire occurred "a little over 103,000 years ago" while the original argument makes clear that some of the skeletons which showed evidence of experiencing hot temperatures dated after this fire (i.e., the skeletons were from 100,000 years ago and "spanned about two thousand years" while the fire occurred "over 103,000 years ago"). D)The paradox exists in skeletons dating back to 100,000 years ago. Consequently, explaining how a fire (and thus hot temperatures) could have existed "as early as 70,000 years ago" does not explain the paradox. In other words, this answer does not explain how the skeletons of animals 100,000 years old experienced hot temperatures (although it would explain how skeletons 70,000 years old experienced hot temperatures). E)While this answer does not prove what caused the chared skeletal remains, it "best explains" how the skeletons experienced hot temperatures (i.e., the hunters cut wood and, implied in this, they started fires to cook animals).
2) Based upon the results of a recent study, the net value of assets held by young adults or for the benefit of young adults exceeds the net value of assets held by middle-age working professionals with children. The fundamental flaw in the argument is that it is comparing unlike parts. Specifically, the argument is comparing the net value of assets held by or in the name of a group with the net value of assets held by (and not in the name of) another group. It is quite possible that the large value of assets held for children or beneficiaries (e.g., trusts and estates) comprise large amounts of money.
A)The argument notes that the study considered "the net value of assets" (i.e., assets minus liabilities). Consequently, the study did adequately account for the role of debt in acquiring assets. B)Eliminating one's debt via bankruptcy would not be unique to the twenty something demographic nor would debt spending change the value of net assets held in one's name. C)The information about the tax code does not undermine the conclusion of the study. Instead, it simply provides an explanation for why the value of assets (not necessarily net assets) is larger than expected among twenty somethings (i.e., tax incentives fueled it). D)The argument is not based upon the exact amount of spending between age groups. Rather, the argument is based upon relative spending and saving between age groups. E)The argument compares the assets held by and for the benefit of someone with the assets held by (and not for) a different type of person. This unlike comparison is not sufficient logical grounds to make an argument comparing the two groups.
Please look into these questions: 1. Industry Analyst: This summer is expected to be particularly hot and dry in the major orange-growing regions of Florida, the state accounting for the largest share of orange production in the United States. While hot and dry weather usually leads to a substantial drop in the yield of oranges, my projections indicate that the revenues of Florida orange producers will not be substantially affected by these unfavorable conditions.
Which of the following statements, if true, would support the claim of the Industry Analyst?
This summer, Florida orange producers will employ a large number of migrant workers, a strategy that will substantially decrease their labor costs.
Because of the hot and dry weather, the costs of irrigation for Florida orange growers will be nearly 30% higher this summer.
The decline in the supply of oranges caused by the unfavorable weather will result in a substantial increase in their market price.
The hot weather is likely to increase the revenues of companies engaged in tourism and recreation that comprise the largest portion of the state economy.
The weather in Georgia, the second-largest producer of oranges after Florida, is expected to be mild, resulting in higher yields of all fruit.
2. Doctor: Research shows that adolescents who play video games on a regular basis are three times as likely to develop carpal tunnel syndrome as are adolescents who do not play video games. Federal legislation that prohibits the sale of video games to minors would help curb this painful wrist condition among adolescents. The doctor's conclusion depends on which of the following assumptions? The majority of federal legislators would vote for a bill that prohibits the sale of video games to minors. Not all adolescents who play video games on a regular basis suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome. Playing video games is the only way an adolescent can develop carpal tunnel syndrome. Most parents would refuse to purchase video games for their adolescent children. The regular playing of video games by adolescents does not produce such beneficial effects as better hand-eye coordination and improved reaction time.

Anurag, For 1st one - (c) The no. of oranges are going to be lower this year. Which means that if the selling price stays same, the producers are going to make a loss. But if we know that the SP is going to be higher then the revenues might not change.
(a) Typically the revenues is defined as the money that flows into the producer's pockets by selling the oranges (which is different from the profit which is calculated as revenues-operationalcosts-etcetc). So even if the labor becomes cheaper and the selling price of orange isn't increasing then it means that money that flows into to the producer is going is going to be low (less # oranges * same SP). So this choice doesn't help the analyst's prediction.
For the second one D - Scientist suggests that by not giving video games to the children the problem will be solved. If he says that he is assuming that it is children who directly go and buy the videogames and so after the implementation of the rule even if the children beg their parents to buy them (since parents can still buy it for them) that parents won't buy the games for their children.
C - This is a stated fact - "one in three have a chance of developing" - this statement directly implies that some kids who keep playing all the time will develop more than others (those who will not develop this syndrome). So this is not an assumption but almost directly mentioned in the passage.
The doctors conclusion depends on which of the following assumptions? The majority of federal legislators would vote for a bill that prohibits the sale of video games to minors. Not all adolescents who play video games on a regular basis suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome. Playing video games is the only way an adolescent can develop carpal tunnel syndrome. Most parents would refuse to purchase video games for their adolescent children. The regular playing of video games by adolescents does not produce such beneficial effects as better hand-eye coordination and improved reaction time.
A) Other scientific research released two years before the expedition showed that the remote region of northern Canada underwent considerable warming in the past 100,000 years. B) Chemical changes that naturally occur during the process of decay in only one north Canadian species produce the same evidence of the species' skeletons being exposed to hot temperatures as the expedition scientists found. C) A little over 103,000 years ago, a large fire is known to have occurred in northern Canada. D) Strong evidence exists that as early as 70,000 years ago, Homo sapiens around the world relied heavily on fire to cook animals. E) In the same expedition and in roughly the same layer of excavation, scientists found rudimentary wood cutting and hunting tools used by early humans.
A) The argument does not properly consider the impact of the debt financing of assets. B) The argument never discusses the effects of filing for bankruptcy and twenty somethings' proclivity for deficit spending leading to bankruptcy. C) The argument never discusses the role that the country's tax code, which encourages financial investment on the part of twenty somethings, plays. D) The argument does not specify the exact amounts of saving and spending on the part of each age group. E) The argument never considers that the study compares assets held both by or for the benefit of young adults with assets held by working adults.

4. Among the more effective kinds of publicity that a hotel developer can get for a hotel location is to offer all potential new customers a free week at the hotel and to advertise this offer in the office of a well-recognized travel agency. The benefits of such an offer include not only a sure increase in new regular customers compared to the number of new regular customers that the hotel could expect without such an offer, but also a commission paid by the travel agency to the hotel developer.
Which of the following conclusions is best supported by the information above?
(A) The number of people for whom experiencing one week at the hotel provides an adequate substitute for visiting the hotel on a regular basis is smaller than the number for whom the free week stimulates a desire to return on a regular basis.
(B) Because the financial advantage of offering a free week through a travel agency usually accrues to the hotel developer, some travel agencies are unwilling to promote the free week.
(C) In calculating the total number of customers that a hotel has attracted, hotel developers include the number of people who utilized the free hotel stay offer.
(D) The effectiveness of offering a free week through a travel agency, measured in terms of regular customers for the hotel, is proportional to the recognizability of the agency in which the hotel was advertised.
(E) Hotels that appeal to the average person visiting a travel agency draw more regular customers than hotels that do not appeal to the average person visiting a travel agency.
6. Interstate cooperation is experiencing a small resurgence among state governments in the northeastern U.S., even though political causes taken up by two or more states joined in an informal partnership draw less national attention to the needs of individual states than causes taken up by only one state. The advantage of interstate cooperation is that such joint efforts may allow individual state governments to resolve issues affecting their citizens more quickly and effectively than would be the case if states acted alone.
Which of the following is information provided by the passage?
(A) Interstate cooperation involves causes too broad for a single state government to handle on its own.
(B) Interstate cooperation results in a pooling of resources leading to the absolute resolution of major issues affecting all states involved.
(C) Interstate cooperation has previously been both more common and less common than it is currently among state governments in the northeastern U.S.
(D) Partnerships between state governments in the northeastern U.S. do not lead to the resolution of enough issues to be worthwhile.
(E) Partnerships between state governments in the northeast benefit only those citizen groups that are the most politically vocal.
7. Osalia was formerly a major exporter of diamonds, but in recent years a faltering economy and stringent government regulations diminished investment in new diamond mines. As a result, Osalian diamond exports declined steadily as aging diamond mines became depleted. Osalia's recovering economy, combined with less stringent government regulations, will certainly lead to the rapid establishment of new diamond mines. However, it is too soon to conclude that the rapid establishment of new diamond mines will result in increased diamond exports because ______.
Which of the following most logically completes the argument?
(A) the price of diamonds is not expected to fluctuate in the coming years
(B) the recovery of Osalia's economy is expected to result in a major increase in the number of Osalian industries using diamond-tipped drill bits
(C) most of the investors in Osalia's new diamond mines are expected to be foreigners
(D) new technology is capable of locating diamonds in mines thought to be depleted
(E) many of the new diamond mines in Osalia are likely to be as lucrative as those that were established when Osalia was a major diamond exporter
10. Over the last year, Make-Well Paper Manufacturing's total expenditures on materials and labor have been larger than the company can sustain. Make-Well cannot reduce its labor costs by changing contracts or making layoffs, so it cannot reduce its expenditures in this way. Therefore, Make-Well has decided to buy materials exclusively from suppliers that recycle materials. Many suppliers will respond to this shift by beginning to recycle materials, since Make-Well's business will pay for the cost of switching to recycled materials within three years. Thus, because recycled materials are less expensive to purchase, Make-Well's plan is likely to reduce its total expenditures.
In the argument above, the two portions in boldface play which of the following roles?
(A) The first presents a development whose likely outcome is at issue in the argument; the second is a judgment used to support the argument's conclusion about that outcome.
(B) The first is a development that the argument attempts to explain; the second is a prediction made by the argument to support this explanation.
(C) The first exhibits a problem, a response to which the argument evaluates; the second is the judgment reached through that evaluation.
(D) The first is a position the argument seeks to propose; the second is a judgment the argument uses to support this position.
(E) The first and the second are both evidence to support the main conclusion established by the argument.
11. There is a larger number of working film actresses under 30 than over 30 at any given moment in the United States. This fact is commonly attributed to the supposition that film audiences are youth-obsessed and prefer to see younger actresses on screen. However, the results of recent polls show that of the 50 most popular working film actresses, more than three-quarters of them are over the age of 30 and have been acting in films for more than 10 years. The polls' results suggest that the true reason why there are a larger number of younger actresses is not that they are preferred on screen but rather that studios typically expose audiences to actresses at the beginnings of their careers, hoping that this early exposure will cause the audiences to become fans over time.
What is the role played by the two boldfaced portions of the argument above?
(A) The first is a claim used as support for a position which the argument undermines; the second is that position.
(B) The first provides support for an explanation that the argument advocates; the second is that explanation.
(C) The first is evidence that has been used as support for a position that the argument advocates; the second is an explanation undermined by the argument.
(D) The first is evidence used as support for a position that the argument challenges; the second is a claim used to support a position that the argument favors.
(E) The first is a claim, the validity of which is called into question by the argument; the second is a conclusion that is drawn from this claim.
12. Brian: The court decision requiring certain manufacturing industries in the United States to pay billions in fines for polluting the air will cause these industries to relocate to other countries. As a result, the United States' tax revenue from these industries, which amounts to $500 million, will be lost, as will the jobs that these industries provided. Therefore, these fines will harm the global economy.
Pete: The $500 million in tax revenues lost by the United States will go to other countries; jobs and tax revenues will be gained as well as lost.
Pete responds to Brian by _______.
(A) demonstrating that Brian's conclusion is based on evidence that is not relevant to the issue at hand
(B) challenging the plausibility of the evidence that serves as the basis for Brian's argument
(C) implying that Brian's conclusion neglects to consider a mitigating consequence
(D) reinforcing Brian's conclusion by supplying a complementary interpretation of the evidence Brian cites
(E) agreeing with the main conclusion of Brian's argument but construing that conclusion as grounds for optimism rather than for pessimism
18. In order to compensate for rising costs within the state prison system, one state legislator recommends increasing the amount of money allotted to state prisons by ten percent per prisoner. The legislator claims that this will increase the overall budget for the prison system by ten percent in the coming years.
On which of the following assumptions does the legislator's argument depend?
(A) The rising costs within the state prison system are not the result of an increase in the number of prisoners in the system.
(B) The total number of prisoners in the state prison system will not decrease in upcoming years.
(C) The number of people who are sentenced to non-prison sentences, like community service, rather than prison sentences, will not increase.
(D) The total number of prisons in use in the state will not decrease from its current level.
(E) The average number of prisoners in each prison will not decrease in the coming years.
