Hi puys, I have converted for FPM Economics at IIM Cal. I need some info if you can help. I am MSc Agriculture, MSc Plant Biotech and Diploma in Business Admin. What kind of placement I can expect after completing FPM in Economics from IIM Cal ? I will be 37 years by the time I finish FPM. What is upper age limit for joining faculty at IIM's or other govt colleges/univ's or govt jobs.

Hello! Now that admission date is approaching for all the IIM"s . I would like to know that how much was the GMAT cutoff at each of the IIM's this year as I plan to appear for the same in June for next year, FPM prog (2014) .

Now a days, all premier B schools have started EFPM, which is similar to FPM, for meeting the need of working professionals. I would like to learn from the members of this forum about the comparative difference mainly in terms of course structure, examination pattern, difficulty level (both for the entry and while pursuing the course) market value etc between these two prog.

To begin with, many congratulations to the final converts!!
I have a specific question regarding call procedure.. I applied to IIM C/B/K with the following profile:
GMAT - 690 (Q 48: V 37)
Work ex - 4 years
MBA - 7.89 CGPA out of 10
Grad - 51%
XII - 90%
X - 73%
However, I wasn't called from any of the IIMs.. When i look back, I believe my Grad score and/or my lower Quant score in GMAT could have been the spoilsport.. However, could the seniors pls throw some light on what exactly can be done for next application round?
I do plan to retake the GMAT and am currently co-authoring a research paper at my company. Any thoughts and suggestions are welcome. Also, what is the approx age bracket when people start with their FPMs??!!

IIM Indore Interview experience for the IS area ...
There were 3 professors in the panel ... 2 are from the IS area itself and 1 is from some other area (i can say that coz the 2 which i recognize, there profile is listed as IS professors at the IIM I web site) ... the interview was on 27th April and they were spending good deal of time on each candidate (approx. 30 min per candidate) ... they are even taking time in calling the candidates (I suppose that they were discussing about every candidate after the interview) ... my interview lasted for about 40 minutes from 2:15 pm to 2:55 pm ... mainly the 2 IS professors were asking and the third one is just seating there (may be observing the candidate's confidence level and facial expressions) ... so it goes like this ...
Prof 1: So u r working as a senior lecturer ...
Me: yes sir i m working as a senior lecturer at ... ... for the past 3 years ...
Prof 1: which subjects do u teach there ?
Me: Cloud computing which is my primary research area as well and i want to do some quality research work in this area. I also teach computer architecture and organization & software testing.
Prof 2: Ok, what do u mean by agile software development?
Me: Replied.
Prof 2: But what u r saying is same as RAD (rapid application development). Then how is it different from agile?
Me: Not able to answer 😞
Prof 2: Ok its written in your application that u also know about software requirements engineering. Then, what is JAD in software requirement engineering?
Me: Don't know sir. I have done this course during my masters.
Prof 1: Ohhh so u don't teach requirements engineering?
Me: No sir.
Prof 1: U also teach network security ?
Me: No, sir I have written it in my application because I am interested in it but where I work, our HOD teaches this subject and hence I did not get to teach this subject.
Prof 1: Ok so u teach software testing?
Me: Yes sir.

Prof 1: What is virtualization in cloud computing?

Prof 1: Why we do virtualization ?

Prof 2: But what research would u do in cloud computing? There is already so much done.
Me: There are many open research issues and challenges still to be addressed sir.
Prof 2: Give some example areas where u would do research in the area of cloud computing?
Me: Development of open cloud standards is one such area involving migration of customer data or applications from one cloud vendor to another.
Prof 2: But this can easily be done, if the customer does not like cloud services of one vendor he / she can easily do so?
Me: It is not so easy, there are issues like data lock in or vendor lock in.
Prof 2: No, there r no such issues.
Me: At least this is what I have read in some of the research papers on cloud computing.
Prof 2: Which research paper have u read? Can u name one of them.
Me: Replied.
Prof 2: That must not be a research paper. It must have been a newspaper article or some thing published in a magazine.
Me: No, its a research paper published by UC, Berkeley RAD lab in some journal.
Prof 2: Which journal?
Me: I can't exactly remember the journal name, but I think its Communications of ACM.
Prof 2: No it can't be.
Me: (At that point I thought to tell the professor that I have that research paper in my bag outside the room, but even I was not 100 % sure that it was Communications of ACM, so I thought its better not to argue with him). May be I m incorrect sir.
Prof 1: But the cloud computing research will involve a lot of infrastructure which is not possible to be made available here at IIM I. Then how u would do research here?
Me: IIM I can get into a SLA with Amazon so as to get AWS EC2 instances for academic research. There are many universities who have such Academic Service Level Agreements (SLA) with Amazon.
Prof 1: Ya that could be done.
Me: Yes sir 😃
Prof 2: Ok which other challenging area u may like to work from cloud computing area?
Me: (After some thought) Sir ... Virtual Machine Migration may be one such area.
Prof 2: Can u explain that?
Me: Replied and explained with an example 😃
Prof 2: But this kind of work is done in Microsoft or Google?
Me: Yes that's true but we can do it here at small scale as per the infrastructure available to us. Or one can implement parallel / distributed algorithms over cloud environment and quantify the results of different algorithms.
Prof 1: What u r talking about is fine but all this is pure computer science stuff. What u would do from management point of view?
Me: (Again after some thought) May be I can explore some of the legal issues with cloud computing. (Explained with an example !)
Prof 1: U may be able to publish a few papers in this area, but u have to explore more as this area is ever changing.
Me: Yes sir, the area of cloud computing is ever evolving and what today's done may become obsolete after a few years. But cloud computing will remain.
Prof 2: Ya cloud computing will remain but u have to look into other areas of cloud computing for substantial work.
Me: Yes sir, surely I will.
Prof 1: Ok, what is your family's financial status? Are they dependent on you?
Me: (First I didn't understood the question) Are u asking about my parents sir?
Prof 1: I mean who ever will be dependent on u for the next few years as our FPM program is fully residential, so how u will survive?
Me: Replied.
Prof 2: If we don't give u admission then what will u do?
Me: I m in academics and I like teaching, so I will remain in academics. So, if I don't get admission this time, I might do PhD / FPM from some where else.
Prof 2: Have u thought about other options?
Me: I have already done my masters from US (mentioned the name of the university) and I know the process to get into PhD program of US universities. So, next year I may again apply to IIMs along with the US universities.
Prof 2: Ok, you may leave now.
Me: Thank u sir (I was about to leave but Prof 1 said that let me ask some mathematics questions).
Prof 1: If u have a function f(x) such that the value of first derivative of f(x) wrt x and of second derivative of f(x) wrt x; both r zero then what can u say about such a function or about the value of x?
Me: (There was paper and pencil on the table so I have first written what he as asked on the paper and then started thinking) I am not sure sir, as I have done such mathematics back in class 10+1 or 10+2 and I don't want to guess.
Prof 1: Ok ... what is the difference between a matrix and its determinant?
Me: Replied.
Prof 1: What is the significance of finding determinants?
Me: I am not sure sir 😞
Prof 2: Sparse matrix?
Me: Yes that i surely know sir (and replied with example as well as application :))
Prof 1: Ok thank you. You may leave now.
Me: Thank you sir.
The interview was more like a formal discussion and even Prof 1 & Prof 2 were discussing among themselves about cloud and also with me. Overall a healthy experience after IIM A's disastrous interview experience ... 😁😁
