Fpm 2013

@caprion I mean on your date 3 were interviewed? preeti was telling about 7

oh god...PG copied FB :P

@sb29 datz strange....i checked dat out with an officer at d regional office of AICTE in Kolkata who dint have an answer πŸ˜› ...but said no national institution directly under d MHRD requires periodic AICTE approval (i thot only d INIs were exempted), 'approval' & 'equivalence' were d same according to him (how can that be?), and dat whatever holds for one campus would hold for other campuses under the same umbrella by default!!

Now, as far as I know, fellow programmes of IIFM, IMI Delhi & MICA are approved by the AICTE (am not sure of IRMA though). So, it might be possible that there still exists too many discrepancies.
IMI offers a part-time programme (I know one FP student), IIFM & MICA offer sectoral FPM.

Coming back to the ads, most of those seem to be distinct from one another...requirements such as 'a min. of 3 yrs. exp. prior to joining as asst. prof.', 'a few years at an IIT, IISc, NITIE, etc.' are also stated, when even fresh PhDs might get through! They say 'comparable institutes' may be perceptive, but 'approval' or 'equivalence' isn't πŸ˜›

Having said all of that, I've known of better candidates who lost out during such processes and doctoral candidates from the best of public institutes in India holding ad-hoc positions in unknown private institutes across the country...datz bcz d real dynamics are quite different from d convention!!

Also, an area like Sociology (for FPM) is thought to be less popular, while Ramachandra Guha has gone places post doing that.

An individual is more important here!!πŸ˜ƒ

@sb29

@caprion

Yeah it is a big mess. This is one reason why the IIM bill is required. I updated my post above by the way.

true...even the Bill keeps getting into trouble!! :P

@AAOne

@preethi1990

one can always apply for the equivalence certificate from the AICTE (many do that!)

...by "equivalence" i meant 'statutory cover' here -- what Indian Engineering Services exam. aspirants are sometimes made to seek in case the discipline/stream in which they graduate does not feature in the list released by d UPSC!

hi puys anyone there for RAT at IIM B tmrw I am already there πŸ˜›

All the best to everyone in IIMB today to appear for RAT. good luck ! I will be there in front of the hall . Hope can meet at least some of you ! Please attend the interaction session planned for the evening. See you all !

Looks like a lot of changes in FPM selection process in IIMB this year. They have invited 202 people for RAT (which is normal size) but a high proportion of that number is for Economics.

Also this year Area Specific Tests are scheduled for POM and Finance (both for the first time) and as usual for ESS and Public Policy. There are no area specific tests for OBHR unlike previous years.

Also POM and IS area plan to have interviews also scheduled today itself (only 10 people each). So for POM and IS people everything will get over today itself !!?!! 😁

@preeti1991 Hope you can manage this cramped up schedules. Fingers crossed !.

@caprion @preeti1991 @Adymos @mmv Any news from ISB H regarding their final selections ?

@rahul5184

@caprion @preeti1991 @Adymos @mmv Any news from ISB H regarding their final selections ?

let me know as well!!!

Anyone here gave IIM Indore RAT....How do you rate the question paper....English...Tough...Reasoning..Very tough...Quantitative...Average....total there were 60 Questions...3 sections..20 questions in each section.....120 Minutes... God knows..what will be the cutoff this time around....Share ur experiences as well....πŸ‘

Done with IIM B (Finance) interviews. It was a 20 minute disaster but an eye opener for me. Here are the main excerpts of the Interview experience (L12 room. Panel-- Dr Srinivasan (S) and Dr Thampy (T))

T: So Bitan, you have done MBA in finance, working as a lecturer. You started as a Eurodollars Trader,and moved to IT back end finance then how come you ended up as a lecturer?
Me: Answered...

T: So you take Corporate Finance classes, what is the average dividend yield of Indian corporates?
Me: Totally stumped... (My mistake I should have known. It is basic corporate finance GK 😠 )

T: What is dividend yield?
Me: Answered...

S: So you teach derivatives too. What is a butterfly strategy? Draw the payoff diagram of butterfly spread on 3 month European call option.
Me: Drew it correctly on the notepad he provided after drawing an incorrect one in the first instance when I wasted some 2 minutes while the professors looked on asking skeptical questions ...

S: Suppose you get Rs. 1 crore and asked to invest in a project. Obviously you would expect the present value of cash flows from the project to be more that 1 crore so as to generate profits. What if you get a grant of 1 crore instead and have no obligation at all to generate profits. What do you think would be your opportunity cost in this case?
Me: Dr. Srinivasan and I haggled with the question on his pad for 2-3 minutes but could not give a satisfactory answer in the end.

T: (While reading my SOP) So you are interested in fixed income securities. Tell me that if G-Secs and T- Bills are risk free, why do we need any return on them?
Me: By investing in G- Secs we are giving up the opportunity of immediate consumption. The the return we require is the time premium that we ask for for sacrificing present consumption. (Do not know whether I am correct or not, seniors and gyaani junta please pitch in lookround )

T: What do you think is the yield on German Bonds?
ME: Again stumped... had no idea (Basic Fixed Income GK) Yet answered... It should be less that the yields on Indian Gsecs but more than US Treasury.

S: Why!!??
Me: Indian Yields are closer to 9% while US yields are close to 1% because of the near zero interest rate policy that feds are pursuing. Germany is by far the most stable economy in Euro Zone right now, and when I was a trader yields on german bonds were anyway higher US 2 year treasuries.
(They were not convinced, Even I was not convinced of my answer)

T: (he must have become exasperated by now !!) Ok tell me what is the main reason that sovereign bond yields differ across countries?
Me: I was stumped again.. had read about it just a few days ago that it depends on credit worthiness of the govt. itself (remembered it on the auto while returning home!!!) but could not recall it at that time. Instead answered that the bond yields offered by sovereign debt instruments depend on already outstanding public debt of a nation. Higher the outstanding public debt, higher would be the return asked by the bond investors on subsequent debt issues. (Dr Srinivasan looked satisfied and nodded at Dr. Thampy, Dr Thampy was expressionless!! splat )

S: Suppose you have bought a bond of a firm whose face value is 100. The value of the firm increases as Rs. 100, Rs. 200, Rs. 300 and so on. If you liquidate the bond you will always get half the firm's value, if you hold the bond then value will always of the bond will always be Rs. 100. Draw the graph of the payoff. If there is an embedded call option in the bond, what do you think would be the strike price?
Me: After nearly 30 seconds of mind block and staring at the pad, drew the payoff diagram which seemed to satisfy Dr. Srinivasan. Regarding the strike price I again suffered a mind block and could not answer (It would be Rs. 200, it struck me in auto😠 )

T: How good are you in Qaunts?
Me: Not quite good.

T: What is the formula for present value factor of annuity?
Me: Wrote it on the pad, he was satisfied...

T: Ok now derive it.
Me: Epic Fail Again 😠

S: As a teacher how do you rate yourself? Do you think you are a good teacher? (They must be laughing as how could I teach if I couldn't answer simple questions!!!!!)
Me: Gave the most confident answer of the entire interview!!!mg 😁

That's It folks!!! Adios for the time being πŸ˜ƒ

@gajamani nice to see u in person!
for PhD and Fpm and jobs, already discussed few pages back. IIMs and IITs take FPM guys (check faculty profile).
Fpm@ IIMB - quite surprised to see 200+ for RAT. RAT was overall simialr to CAT. English avg, logical overall and some quant ques were tough. most shorlisted from Economics and finance (40+). IS and POM had interview just after RAT (no filtering for them using RAT at that time). Finance / Public policy / POM had area wise exam (Rat - 10 to 12) -> lunch -> area wise exam at 1:30 onwards. Filtering for Finance / ESS / Public policy area candidates was done and results posted in late evening. Fiance - around 20, ESS - 25 selected for interview. for marketing no idea - total 9 for interview, but don't know whether 9 were called for or a filtering happened as well. (anyone having info plz share).
Mktng interview (3 person) - all interviews were lengthy ; avg 30-40 mins. panel very helpful, supportive, and kind of guiding to reach answer or understand theanswer logic instead of rejecting it directly. mostly Related to SOP and current work. I had far better experience compared to IIMA! during my interview, most of the discussion was on why i want to do it after 11 years in IT and resulting implications on financials etc.some minor ques on social media (positive and negative impact on mktng).
Overall - felt happy after IIMA thrashing (integrate X + sinx + e power X)!!!
IIMB campus was amazing and the best part was through out 24 hours there was at least one shop opened for food / parathas / excellent tea etc and atmosphere was quite lively especially after 9 PM.
Also, the staff (from security to admin people posting information on bulletin board- every one was very helpful and had a smiling face (every 5 min, one of us will go and ask when is the result coming out πŸ˜ƒ

based on overall experience and feeling, IIMB is the place to be (very lively, helpful and supporting) - no ego / rudeness. next 4-5 years should happen in and around positive energy (refer big Boss episodes ;-))

lastly, if anyone has any info on shortlisting or filtering based on RAT for marketing, please share. For other areas, it was there. this may help future prospective so that they can preparer better for RAT (>CAT).

I heard that ISB has sent out emails.....anyone received it yet?

Got through ISB FPM!!!

People interested in Finance/Economics PhD, you can look at IFMR's PhD program. I find their faculty profile extremely good.

Has anyone got in ISB OB&HR;? I got a Ding 😞

My Interview IIM-B OB&HR;

There were 3 people in the panel, One on Skype and 2 at the table.

They started with asking if I had done a thesis during my Masters and went into great details about it then the discussion turned towards Tacit Knowledge and the role of HR in improving Tacit Knowledge base of the organisation. Was able to answer most of the questions to the panels liking (I am assuming this based on the non-verbal feedback and also the body language).

They then asked me to frame a research question on recruitment and tacit knowledge. I was able to do so along with the way I would go about it. Then they moved to tacit knowledge in a hospital (I have mentioned that I was working with a hospital chain and was interested in OB application to Healthcare in my SOP). They then asked me to discuss about tacit knowledge between a surgeon, doctor and nurse was able to do that, then it moved on to recruitment of a surgeon to enhance tacit knowledge was able to answer this with an example which they were happy about. This was followed by the similar question for doctor and nurse. I was then asked why I did a qualitative research and not quantitative was able to explain my thinking about it and they seemed convinced.

I was then asked the difference between absorption capacity and knowledge management was able to give my views on the subject. Then they asked me if I am talking about Absorption capacity or absorptive capacity told that they are similar but different authors what I am talking about is by X and the other is by Y with names (They actually googled what I was saying and said you are right). Then they asked me which KM author have you compared your model with was able to give one or two names they asked to draw up the exact framework that the author had proposed. Here I kind of drew a blank because I did not remember the framework word for word. Told them that I can give a gist but cannot remember the model word for word they were ok with that and gave them a summary.

Then I was asked to develop a model of OB for a Hospital with control parameter, independent variables and the output measures. I answered with a behaviour of nurse model gave some parameters that will impact the behaviour and gave a few outputs was asked the control parameters answered some one of my parameters was also an independent parameter they asked me to redefine but then said its ok. (At this point what I really thinking in my head was if I could have made a model with all the right parameters and controls I would not need to come for FPM πŸ˜› )

Then they asked me about my Engg, said that I had low marks told that I learnt from whatever mistakes I made and my marks became better. Then they asked if Research is my next logical step and not for leaving the stressed hospital environment. I said it is logical I actually like working in hospitals but research is my passion I try to do research even when working and want to make a career in it. I said that I had applied for a PhD after masters in the UK but funding was an issue and did not go ahead with it. And I feel I am suited for research and can do well as that is my field of choice. Then they said thank you and they have no more questions I thanked them and walked out.

Overall I really dont know what to make of my interview they did not ask me any of the generic questions that are usually asked they kept grilling me on knowledge management, behaviour and absorption capacity well lets see what happens πŸ˜ƒ

Do let me know what you Puys think

VERY anxious abt my RAT at IIM-Idr.Answered only 48/60(i.e. 80% of questions).I donot know what will happen.Results will be out in 2-3 days

Does IIMK have written test for fpm (QM & OM)?

And how important is the research proposal that you give while applying? Why do they expect a non-management background person to giv a research proposal before joining for the program itself?

Congrats @nishanta2006

So will you be joining IIM -A,B,C or ISB?
