Congrats!! I have received call for Economics and strategic management from IIM K:)
Hi
I have received interview call from IIM Kozhikode for FPM in IT and systems on April 10th . The call letter says that there would be a written test and personal interview . Can anyone please let me know what type of questions will be there in written test.
I think personal interview will be from my educational background and work experience .
Also it would be great if someone could tell me that is it worth investing four years as I am already working in IT .
What career prospects should I expect in terms of growth , money and opportunities after Phd through FPM .
It would be great if someone could enlighten on this .
Thanks in advance !!
Looking forward to your replies guys !! 😃
@rudrani congrats! The written test will be like CAT with research questions in addition. As far as "worth" is concerned, if u have good prospects in ur current job and don't have much interest in research then continue with ur IT job because it is very difficult to go back to industry after FPM. Else go for FPM as teaching prospects is not an issue afterwards. By the way what time u received ur call?
@mmgg received it this early morning . what type of research questions will be there and would here be again sections in quantitaive analysis and verbal reasoning ? Also what prospects are there in academia in monetary terms . What should I expect after 4 years . This is a little important for me if you could tell
Hi...received a call from IIM K...for Finance...on April 8....
@rudrani the prospects in monetary terms depend upon the employer. If it's a government university, it will take u as Asst. Prof. & around 50-60K pm will be ur in hand sal. In academics, there are hardly any increments. So, either u get it by changing institute or by promotion only. Some top private institutes offer even > 1L pm. So, it depends.
Syllabus of aptitude test will be as per ur comment. However, the research questions will be based on a separate paper in management called "Business Research Methodology". It will involve statistical tools and techniques.
@mmgg Hey..written test is for all??? and if yes...than which sort of questions/sections would be their???
@rudrani Unlike MBA,
FPM is interviews are mainly focused on the following areas:
1. They try to find out ur interest in teaching higher education
2. They want to know ur interest in doing research in that particular institute only
3. They check ur pre-preparedness on ur intended area of research.
4. Ur goals after fpm
5. In depth knowledge about the subject u chose
6. How ur selection will benefit them?
Note: The questions are mainly based on "What you can do" rather than "What u have done". For example if your experienced is not in the concerned area then they would not take care of the number of years u worked with that company because it simply does not impress them.
refer my reply 1033.
IIM K..interview only of one day???
@cacs
Well I don't know who has written the comment you have pointed to, but trust me it is nothing like what it has been made out to be in that comment.
I am a fresher from a not so well known college and I have completed two years in FPM program. Also please note that I do not speak on behalf of all FPM programs but rather on my experiences at FP program at IIM calcutta
Few of my best friends are PGP students and to the best of my experiences I have never been treated as a second grade citizens. We are as important a part in student affairs at IIM Calcutta as any other program. FP students are elected to student council positions at IIM Calcutta. The hostel representative of the largest hostel of IIMC is an FP student ( Only 1.1% of the population of that hostel is FP students) . FP students are heads of various clubs, groups at IIM Calcutta.
Regarding the point about stipend. Well I get the amount as advertised at my admissions, never a penny less. The facilities provided are good.
Explaining the facilities accorded to an FP student at IIM calcutta:
1. Stipend:- Rs 20,000 Per month till CQE, Rs 22,000 per month post CQE, Rs 24,000 per month post Proposal Defence
2. Contingency - Rs 20,000 per year plus Rs 30,000 computer grant in first year ( Total first year grant 50,000)
3. 2 international Conferences and a new proposal recently passed also proposes to support two domestic conferences over and above the contingency support
4. Accommodation:- Rs 5000 per year has to be paid for hostel facilities
Also please note that IIM ABC are self self-sufficient and do not take funds from centre ( There might be other IIMs as well, but I am not sure). So there is no question of hiring FP students just for UGC grants as there are no UGC grants anyway.
Regarding placements:- The program is designed for excellence in Academics and research and most people see it that way. There are very few people who go for placements at IIMC along with PGP. There is no separate placement process for FP students as the number of people opting for the same varies between 0 to 4 each year. FP students if they go through placements get the same opportunities and same options that a similar PGP student would get.
Also just for info in past few years FP stuedents from IIM Calcutta have gone on to join companies like Mckinsey, BCG ATKearny etc.
But understand that these roles are more or less PGP roles for which spending 4 years doing research is not worth it. In case managerial level roles are what attracts you, doing 2 year MBA program is what would be beneficial for you. Otherwise you would feel stuck doing research over a period of four years while your friends get the same job after 2 year MBA. Still at the end of your research if you wish to enter corporate world, rest assured you would have same opportunities and issues that a PGP student would have at IIM Calcutta.
I hope I have clarified the doubts you had regarding the issues raised in the post you quoted.
