Hi All,

I am appearing for FRM this Nov. I get only weekends to prepare. Please help me with study material/classes or notes. Any kind of help will be appreciated.
Thanks

As a first step, I suggest reading the last lots of posts on this thread. Then post your specific requirements here. Without a specific need, you may not get the desired response.

People are generally very helpful here and you will find yourself in good company.

Hi,

i need some advice whether to appear for FRM exam or not? I am an engineering graduate, cleared cfa l1,will be going for level 2 in june 13.
i know that FRM and CFA offer different career paths but at this point of time i am not very sure which path to take(jst wnt to take up FRM as another career option), so shud i go for FRM (nov 12 )exam or Put all my efforts for cfa l2.

Hi All,
I'm new to FRM, and working in the Field of IT from last 9 years.
But from last 2 years working in core Financial areas as a IT professional and realise the need to get some financial certification to get a basic (more than that) of Finance quants. I'm in London & found the finance market very hot, atleast in IT. Also I can see lot of IT jobs demanding the knowledge of Finance & nice to have some Quant/derivatives/Price -Instrument knowledge.
As I have already working in Finance IT, so want to prepare myself for FRM - 1 in november.

I can devote weekend as well as some evening time to study.
So can you please help me if my decision is correct or not, also I have checked lots of previous pages of this thread and found that the material for FRM can be a mix of Hull, Julian, Kaplan & BT.

so can you please let me know how much time should I need to devote, and also how difficult is for a person in IT to move into FRM.

Send me a PM with your profile and expectation details. I'll try to point out the direction to you.

Hey,

I've enrolled myself for the FRM-I in Nov '12. On the recent webcast GARP mentioned that they are not providers of study material for the FRM, but how good is the material GARP gives out for the exam?

GARP does provide Core Readings - which are absolutely top notch. But this is not included in the price of the enrollment and exam. You need to pay separately.

GARP does not provide other study material - these are provided by likes of Kaplan etc. Quality of these - well that's another story... suggest read this thread completely.

thanks leolazer... I'm aware that GARP provides the material on payment only.. just wanted to know if its worth the money..

That is a call that you will have to take... because the cost is high.

I can tell you about the content and quality. Some of the material is research papers which are free to download, some of the material is from books like Hull, Jorion, Watson, Tuckman which you can purchase. This still leaves a lot of material from other books which do not have cheaper Indian editions and sourcing ebooks would be a headache. All said, then, there are copiers which provide one with the material for a fraction of the cost (though not being strictly legal).

Another factor would be your background and how much detail do you want to cover. Do you really want to cover the detailed core readings or just the brief Schweser etc etc.

Hi,

I am planning 2 write FRM nxt yr, i hav gone through many pages of PG. Hav 2 ques:

1. i hav ordered GARP core reading books + question banks books + hand books from mahakali xerox. What are these handbooks?? Is anything else necessry or required o will be helpful?

2. Some part of the core readings might change the nxt yr just like cfa, will i be able to get that material online??

Good to see you preparing in advance.

The FRM Handbook is as below.
Amazon.com: Financial Risk Manager Handbook + Test Bank: FRM Part I / Part II (Wiley Finance) (9780470904015): Philippe Jorion, GARP (Global Association of Risk Professionals): Books

Other is Schweser notes - but you need not go in for it at this moment since you would get 2012 notes - what you need is 2013 notes later. For the time being, would be enough if you prepare from Core Readings of the 2012. Once the 2013 course is announced, you can repeat the portion that is common and go in for the portion that is new.

The new portion per year is generally 25%. This may / may not be available on the net or elsewhere. Else you can order the Core Readings 2013 afresh. This is a call you would have to take.

Hi Puys,

I am preparing for FRM Part1 Nov 2012 exam. Have went thru some of the previous posts in this thread wid regards to FRM material. Just wanted to confirm -

I have ordered FRM material from Lakshmi Xerox, Mumbai. He has provided me with 5 books + 1 CD. The books are 'Schweser Study Notes', they are -

Book 1 - Foundations of Risk Mgmt
Book 2 - Quantitative Analysis
Book 3 - Financial Mkts & Products
Book 4 - Valuation & Risk models
Book 5 - Practice exams
The CD contains the Schweser Pro Question bank.

My doubts are -
1) In your view, is this material enough to clear the exam? I mean, is everything being covered in this?
2) I read in this thread about the FRM Handbook & Core Readings. Can some1 advise how different/in depth are these from the books I have (Schweser)?

I chkd Leolazer's posts above, but mainly wanted to know if the Core readings & Handbook include anything which may not be covered in the Schweser notes.

3) What exactly are 'Quick sheets' ? I haven't got them from Laxmi xerox.

Thanks a ton in advance!

This is the Schweser Set.
Now to answer your queries...
1. Difficult to say if this is enough. If you are very good in finance and risk, you would not even need this much. However, if you are a beginner, this is not enough. You have to decide for yourself how much detail you want to get into.
2. Core Readings are the detailed book chapters and papers that comprise the complete syllabus. Schweser Notes are just that - summary notes to prepare for the exam. Handbook is a book on Risk Management that contains some brief concepts and old FRM questions.
3. Quick Sheet by Schweser are pages of important formula. You will need these if you are too lazy to write down your own notes and formula sheets. PM me if you need these and I can check it up.

Hope I have answered your questions. If not, perhaps someone can jump in and do the needful.

Hey Guys.. I'm planning to give FRM part I in Nov'12. Please guide me which books should I refer to?
The material from US GARP( which costs $250).
or
Schweser notes + Videos.

Also Om book store(Mumbai) is giving the curiculum books for Rs.1000/-. I believe they would the same as provided by US GARP.

Please guide me in making this decision as to which books should be referred to. I believe Schwerser will suffice the requirements to clear the exam.
Regarding my background in finance, I have just given my CFA L2 in June(Hoping to clear it).

Agree.

FRM is not a basic qualification so do not expect that. It serves only as a proof of your grasp on RM. At best it is an addon certification. You need basic Finance / Banking degree or experience for FRM to really help you.

The period of preparation is a factor of your background knowledge, your study style (whether you skim through and grasp or study deep basics) and time available etc.

Probably, you can estimate 200 - 300 hours per Part if your finance knowledge is decent.

hi guys,
I navigated through the 194 pages of this thread, I found useful info. However, still can not make appropriate decisions regarding sutdy material.
Here is my situation:
- I am an investment adivsor in the private banking department of a retail bank.
- I sat for the CFA level I exam on june 2012.
- I have a bachelor degree in general business.

I find myself really good with equity, fixed income and derivatives instruments, but not to alternative investments (like REITS).

I am sitting the Nov 2012 FRM EXAM Part 1

I need your help in deciding upon the FRM material:

Shall i buy:

1. GARP Core Readings,

2. Schweser Notes, or

3. Bionic Turtle notes.

I am so confused which one to buy, I am afraid of buying one of the last two options and turn out to be insufficient or so..

Please I need help,
Please reply as soon as possible, as time is closing in.
I would be pleased if i can get more than one response (opinion).
Please consider my situation and qualifications.

Thank you in advance for your efforts.:grin::grin:

hey Janti,

You should start with Core Readings as the name suggests it covers the Core theory and practice to be FRM and pass FRM Exam prescribed by GARP.
As I am also preparing for Part I & II, i feel the Schweser and Bionic Turtle would be good for revision. PM me or leolazer for more details of Schweser and Bionic Turtle. Understanding the concepts and passing the exam are two different things, and for FRM both are required so go through the core readings first and then decide which one (Schweser and Bionic Turtle) you would like to refer.

Review on material from Om Books:
Schweser Part I : paper and print quality is very poor - xerox offset printed books
Core Reading part I : they have just compiled the material for core readings, the material is not exactly same as you would find on the first page of the book. for example the chapters from Hull are not from the 8th version

Core Reading part II : the whole wasn't as per FRM AIM statement 2012,few chapters were missing and i didn't check further.

But "Om Books" service is really very good they can deliver the material within 3 to 4 days and in my case they made it even before i paid the amount.

I believe Core Reading is the Super Set for FRM Exam, don't miss that. Those at the end of each chapter and the current affairs discussed in books would be really helpful and more than just to pass the exam.
