Hi
Finally A girl has posted on this thread
Rgding ur Query - Buy only Hull 6th edition book
Dont buy Gujarati (Rs 1200) and VAR (Around Rs 1800)
Buy Core Readings instead of investing in these textbooks. Gujarati is a bit tough book to understand, while VAR - Philippe Jorion book is good, only 2 chapters are required to be studied from this book.
FRM Handbook is not sufficient to crack the exam
U will require to have Core Readings & Schweser with you.
Cheers,
Shyam
Hi All,
This thread is quite informative. Thanks to all the contributors !
I am also appearing for FRM 2008. I have got FRM handbook, 4th ed. I am planning to buy VaR by Jorian, Future n Options by Hull and Essentials of Econometrics by Damodar Gujarati.
Will this much material be sufficient for FRM or do I need to buy any other material? How is Schweser's study material?
I don't have financial background and I am working as s/w engineer in Hyderabad for last 6 months. I want a precise study material that is easier to understand.
Please give your suggestions... and If there is anyone from Hyd here please tell me where can I get FRM material here.
Thanks,
Archana
Hi everyone....according to the latest newsletter released by GARP, 2 new calculators have been permitted for FRM:
New for 2008!
Hewlett Packard 10b II: New for 2008!
Hewlett Packard 20b:

This is in addition to the HP12 C, HP12C Platinum, and TI BA II Plus, and TI BA II plus Professional

Hey ppl..
In comparison how do these 2 calcis fare? I mean Texas Inst and HP ones..
I am new to PG and FRM too...since i m yet to buy a calci :(
Also there r sme ppl who think only scientific calcis wld do..is tat true?
Waiting for the expert opinions :)
Cheers
Well...if you are going to use it only for FRM, I think there's hardly any difference between TI plus and TI prof. But I see 3 scenarios in which I see someone opting a TI Prof over a Plus... 1) He's a quant, and would use it on the job 2) He plans to prepare for CFA, all the way to L3 and 3) He has surplus cash
And between TI and HP, I think TI is better, and the price difference is distinctive.
No idea about the newly released/permitted models though.
My 2 cents.

Hi all,
I have a query.. This is very important in making a sound decision in my career. I put this query in this forum and hope to get some positive feedbacks.
I am planning to do my MBA from a reputed B-school in India joining this year. Parallely am also doing a certification programme in Financial Engineering from Mathematical Science Foundation. I have heard about the FRM programme, which has really incited me to give it a thought. I am interested in a career in derivatives market with involvement of the quant.
I have 3 years exp in the software industry. I have heard that FRM cert. requires 2 years of relevant work-ex. Does that mean that I shouldn't go for the FRM programme now as I do not have any prior financial background.
Also, what is the career path to make a career as a Risk Manager.
Will the MBA + certification programe in Financial Engineer + completion of GARP exam for FRM a right choice for my career.
Pls put light on this query.. as I hope many of us will have similar queries before putting our money and time on it.
Thanks & Regards

Some parts of core readings any how are so important that one cant afford to skip...
Hull, Gujarati, Tuckman are good sources and would provide better insight into subject/concepts.
FRM handbook is like summary book. One may not be able to base their study on the same. You can use that as referencer.
Rest is upto time available to individual.
Thanks alot guys for the replies !:-P
What I could find out about core readings is that they r good but vast in content. I can only go throgh either Schweser or Core readings. I dont think that I can spend so much time for both of them as only 5 months r left and my prep is zukk
I want to know if latest FRM handbook, Hull and Schweser(or should it be Core readings?) will be sufficient for FRM ?
Thanks,
Archana

Dear DC

Keeping my reply short i will say its better if you target FRM in the second year of your MBA as by then:-
- You will have a more clear picture of your career path.
- Fundamentally more prepared in better molded in examinee mind-set.:)
- And on top of all yourself will be able to answer the question of "Relevance" of FRM to you, which I wonder if many can answer for others.
Andy :)

Also is there anyone with a similar profile in this blog ?? If so do please let me know.
