Financial Risk Manager [FRM] by GARP

Hi,I'm pursuing my mba(2nd sem) in a leading b-school
i am a fresher with an engineering background,
would having an frm certification give me an edge and add value to my CV (i'm particularly interested in frm )? or is cfa better at this juncture?

While I see that u r in a dilemma between the cfa and the frm , I would suggest you to first give a sufficien thinking time to yourself . Do a soul search . Figure out the short term goals associated with your career and the way in which you would like to see your carrer progress . CFA is something for roles in domains which can be broadly stated as - Equity Research & Investment Banking (Front end roles if u r frm the top league graduation & bschools schools). On the other hand , FRM can be opted if you want to persue a career in the rsik domain viz risk advisory services ; Risk deptt in banks ; Risk consulting business of a consulting firm like Deloitte .. etc . However , u need to realise the fact that these are not just degrees , these are professional qualifications which will make u feel better only if u have a considerable amount of work ex in hand. Give youself a certain amount of time , talk to some charter holders , do a "self-reserch" over the opportunities associated with the area on the web and come out with a firm decision .

PM for any further query .

Thanks

Hello Leolazer and other Expert Puys,

I am currently doing MBA , 2nd Year in Mumbai and giving FRM Level 1 on Nov - 17 . Have completed about 70% of Schwesser ( One time Reading). Have also revised some of the completed part. Remaining 30% is a bit tough/partly covered in one of the 2nd year Finance subjects, though I know very well that I need to read it it well once at least. Some qns. I wanted to ask

1. Am I quite behind in terms of preparation ( I may devote on an avg. 3--3.5 hrs. until 17th November)
2. Whats the accuracy required in Final Exam to be certain of clearing. Is 70% enough or 75% is must?
3. Like CFA, are there separate sections in Final Exam Evaluation and do I need to get 50% or so in each of these sections minimum...?
4. I have solved qns. from Schwesser CD ( slightly simpler) and Schwesser notes ( slightly tougher). Whats the comparison of these questions to actual exam qns. Are they of same difficulty level?

Hi Puys,
I am a B.Tech in Computer Science. I have been working in a Banking project(Credit and Finace Risk Dept) for the last two years in an IT company. I have recently bagged a position for a System Analyst(Techno Functional Role) for a leading bank for their IT Dept in Risk Management domain. I have a decent understanding regarding the domain. I am really interested to pursue further into this domain and enhance my knowledge.I have thought of appearing for FRM Part -I next year. Can anybody provide me an insight as to how FRM would help me boost my career considering my interest on this particular domain and eagerness to further pursue a career in it.

I will be joining MBA next yr.

My query is will doing FRM be helpful in getting good profile jobs post my mba if the MBA is not from a prestigious institute ?? and how should an FRM holder go about getting off-campus jobs because most good companies go to top b-schools only for placements.

Dear puys,

Please feel free to pm me regarding your queries about FRM. I cleared both levels of FRM in my first attempt in November 2010 and graduated from a leading B-school of the country in 2011. For last 1 year or more, I have also been teaching students preparing for FRM. My long term plan also includes writing a book on FRM.

Regards,
GKRM
