Hi Guys,
I am a working professional and am trying to evaluate the main factors which tilt us towards doing an E-MBA. As I have substantial work experience behind me(>13 years), I would want to take the views of you all, with respect to the Executive MBA for working professionals.
Definition of E-MBA: The program that I refer here is aimed at professionals currently working in middle/senior management. The classes are scheduled over the weekends and the program includes an international leg as well.
To make all this more beneficial for me and for others evaluating executive MBA as an Option, I would start by listing the main features that I feel strongly influence the school selection for us. you guys can select the top three,and provide a reason why these make the most sense to you. The list that I am putting up is not an exhaustive list,so please feel free to add on...
1. Placements ( incase self sponsored)
2. Program Fees
3. International immersion week
4. International faculty
5. ROI
6. College Brand
7. Scholarship
8. International-Indian student mix
9. Financial Assistance
Looking forward to hearing from you all and the rationale behind choosing an executive MBA while working, or whether it makes sense at all...
I would be really active on this thread, so the response to any query put forth would be within 24 hours...
Let your opinions flow through!!!!
Cheers

nice initiative
i feel one year programs of IIMs are better than E-MBA..
1. the learning that u get from full classroom training is different. curriculum or syllabuls might be same. but the learning that happens by discussions outside the class i feel is more important
2. placeemnts chances are better through a full fledged program
3. networking is another option i feel which u get through top schools
4.diversity of class helps in learning
@anaik100 : Hi!!
Well, those are strong points which bend towards the one-year on-campus program. However, if a person is at a senior executive position and is looking to do an MBA, while continuing with the present job, he would have three options :
1. Distance learning : useless, as there are no contact hours here
2. Part time : here classes are weekly in the evenings, so if I am working at Mumbai and have joined at ISB in Hyderbad, this arrangement is not feasible.
This arrangement would be feasible only if the person works at/near the same location, where the school exists
3. E-MBA - You continue with your job while sitting for classes over the weekend and need to work towards taking time out for your weekly assignments.
(( btw ISB has started a similar program last year - you should check out the class profile studying there...impressive!! ))
These E-MBA programs have been quite famous in north america ( check out the Kellogs-Schulich EMBA program ). I wanted to understand whether these programs are gaining acceptance in India, or theres still time for that transition.....
What are the options for EMBA in India? From EMBA i assume you mean Executive MBA. In US this tier is very well defined. The objective is to attract senior management (typical Senior and Executive management), though the target profile is broadend to include middle management too to attract more students :
1.Network with the peers at the same level in different and similar industries
2. Earn an MBA in the least time consuming way (time is the big constraint at senior level)
3. Get a reputed college/Univ name added to the educational pedigree which gets one in our boys club (Harvard/columbia etc)
One doesnt need an MBA to learn and broaden management skills if one has already reach senior and executive level position in industry. He would already be familiar with most of the relevant abstract management concepts and their application in real life business problems. Its just to get a MBA and Univ tag.
Typical EMBA from Columbia will cost one upwards to 175K USD. Typical Part time cost 100K.
@IronDuke
Well...I will try and answer your queries to the best of my knowledge.please feel free to add/critique.. :)
1. Options for EMBA in India : Well, as I said, this type of an EMBA program is at a nascent stage in India, but has a definite growing market. Currently, schools like SP Jain and ISB (PGPMAX) are offering the program for senior executives and middle management.
2. I too feel that a person at senior management level would have had adequate exposure to management and might not need an MBA.Then why would Colleges like ISB/SP Jain - bank on investing big time in these programs...well here are my 2 cents...
2.1 Moving from senior executive in one verticle to managing cross functional teams : These MBA programs provide the students with the intricricies of handling the top level posts aka CEO, MD etc, where everyday interaction is not with your verticle but across verticles.
2.2 International Component : These programs have an international component and tie ups with the harvards/kellogs/whartons of the world. This can take networking for the students to an international level, some of which could be converted into business collaborations.
2.3 Brand on the resume : always a plus.. :)
The Indian EMBA programs for working people are costed much below their north american counterparts...and there are a sizeable number of company sponsored students....
These were my opinions...lets all try and direct the discussion on whether there is infact as big a market for such programs as ISB and other top schools predict....
cheers

That sums my list as well.... 😃
@why_emba
I dont agree with few of things that your mentioned. I agree with the brand part. Thats why Wharton, columbia EMBAs are always full despite costing close to 175K USD in fees only.
A person has already learned lot of cross functional management is one is part of senior management in a business division (not function). The cross functional expertise that you mentioned may be true for business functions like HR, Facilties etc but senior executive role (General manager, VP etc) in a business unit usually means that one has all that it takes to become the CEO of the company. If one lacks what it takes even after reaching such a position, no MBA can susbtitute it.
I believe that cross functional expertise is more relevant at business manager level not a business leader level. The EMBA target BL and PTMBA and FTMBA grooms business manager and equips them with foundation to become a BL someday.
Frankly SPJain and ISB add no value to resume at international level. At that level even IIMA doesnt add much value as far as brand recognition goes.
I will agree with the networking part but with international exchange only that too through an EMBA the opportunities are very limited.
