Hi all

This post is specially for engineers who are not from very good COLLEGE, but think that cracking CAT/GATE can change fortunes. List of most common problems we face are
1. No campus placement, no decent company visits the college
2. No opportunity to work, NO JOB after B.Tech
3. Naukri.com/monster.com dont work because "we are not from premier college or they want experienced guys"
4. Feeling of distress that we are just not good enough, because we are not from good college.

I am just 1 of those. But i feel if i crack CAT, things would definitely change.
1. So 1st of all i wish to know how tough it is for graduates like us to get into iims or iits? There would be preference to guys from good institutes right?

2. Luckily I am working as an "intern" in 1 of leading EDA MNC. But i'm an intern and not a permanent employee. Although 2012 passouts like me who are from top colleges are campus placed with salary that is 3 times compared to my stipend 😞 I'll finish 1 year in February. Should I wait to become permanent before i try CAT or should I go on with my attempt. Does position matter when they count experience ? Although I do almost the same work as permanent employees do.

3.The main motto is to get a good brand name, so that people can recognize me. Also i feel that if i continue to work with my current profile, I dont think the growth rate would be good...just like its now (since last 6 mnths i got only 2-3 calls, that also ultimately didnt work. No one has interviewed me. They only say we'll get back to you and never revert. Therefore i get the feeling that it must be my college background that is putting me back.

And when some1 asks why mba, i feel mba people have a better work profile. I see the program manger in my group... what work does he have...just ask people "By when will u deliver? Why r u not able to meet deadline, etc etc... HE DOESNT NEED TO CODE" Yes coding is a good job but I think core coding people are those who are absolutely crazy.."made for coding only". I like coding but not to that extent. I like talking to people, customer, take their inputs, meet standards thsts why i chose mba.

Also the other was to crack GATE... but no i dont feel like studying technical anymore.

My sis is from IIT and she says 1nce u get a good tag name...life gets much easier. I find it true, thats why i want to get a good tag.

Need feedback on this post and my assumption... how good or how bad. Specially if some UPTU/PTU pvt college engineer who understands this situation. All are invited to reply though...Please dont take this in a wrong way, because people from IIT IISc NIT.. rarely endup without jobs. I say this because I think from my university "UP Technical" apart from some top 25 colleges, rest dont get a job or a job in tech support (most of my frnds are) with a pay of 10k ATMOST.

hmm...This issue is with every second engineer you will meet, And the basic reason is lack of correct guidance and clear goal.

Nothing personal, but i too from a mediocre college but never faced this issue , joined MNC as a fresher and then moved to financial market without and declension.
My suggestion, though a fresh b.tech graduate never accept it, Try for GATE. Nothing better than a govt. job. U may argue that it lacks innovation and progress but i will defend my point on the basis of final settlement you get. Obviously we all look for the same.

Secondly, do add some professional degrees related to market requirement , to your resume and then see the difference. The way you handle your naukri and monster profile do matter a lot, as most of us think only when will pay them, they will float our resume. This is absolutely wrong. The better you prepare your resume , more you update your profile, search jobs in advance search, and apply to different jobs, the more it will highlight to recruiters.

About MBA, that's your personal choice , but do not sit and prepare for it. First, think why you wana do it , what professional goal it will help you to achieve then work hard.

All the best

Wel, the question is not on wheather GATE is better, since after a much deeper study i came up with the decision to take CAT and not GATE. I respect your say ashish0102
