Hi Friends,
DoMS, IIT Madras also admits students based on their CAT scores.
Previously, the GD/PI shortlist was only prepared based on JMET scores, but from the year 2009, DoMS, IITM also considers CAT scores for application.
However, the eligibility still remains the same i.e. the candidate must have a first class 4 yrs bachelor's degree (B.E./B.Tech.), or a first class postgraduate degree in any discipline.
The current batch of 2009-2011 has a few students who have made it through CAT. I would like to highlight that they could not even qualify the JMET entrance test. Their admission was purely based on their CAT performance.
DoMS, IITM believes that a deserving student could have had a bad day on JMET and hence CAT is another opportunity the departmrnt provides them.
Please post your admissions, academic and college related queries on this thread. Looking forward to seeing more candidates qualifying from CAT this year.
Hi Puys,
For those who would be taking CAT and JMET this year, hope your preparations are going as per plan. In addition to the information that Bhawik has already provided i guess next thing you would be wondering is what was the cut off for IITM thru CAT. It was somewhere around 97% with sectionals applicable, therefore even if due to some reason you are not able to clear the cut offs of JMET there are always good chances of applying thru CAT. 😃
puys- after t cat scores can we apply to doms-iitm or is it b4? when s t last date for reg? thanks in advance
seniors,
how can we come to know about the important dates for applying through CAT score??
what were the sectional cut offs apart from overall 97 percentile cut off??
regards
varun
Procedure to reply through CAT is straightforward. The CAT results would have been announcd by the time the JMET results are announced. The JMET results will be out on 4th January. After that, the IITs would open up the admission process. You would be required to download an admission form from the DoMS IITM site, fill in your details and send a DD for the specified amount alongwith the filled in form, to the DoMS office.
The shortlisted candidates will receive an invitation letter for GD/PI from DoMS. The exact dates are not yet out, but generally the GD/PI happens around April.

Hi bhawik,Just wanted to know if we need to fill up separate application forms for CAT and JMET...or is it the same form wherein we mention both the scores?

Its the same form. And you may or may not mention both the scores. I would advise you to fill in whatever you feel is the better of the two.
Hii Bhawik,
can you please give some idea about the sectional cutoffs for last year , based on CAT score?
Cannot say for sure about a blanket cutoff.. it depends on that year's results and the student's profile. For instance, we have a classmate from CAT score who had a 93 %ile, but he had worked for 5 yrs in the UAE. But overall, my personal feeling is that its around: Verbal/DI/Quant 85/85/95 percentiles. This should push the overall score to aorund 97 %ile.
Can b.Pharm student apply to iit madras DoMS? as it is also 4 year course.
The first year students' profiles have ben updated at the doms iit madras website. Do have a look. The students blog has a lot of other information like stuff you should know about doms. Make sure to visit the blog and learn things no one knows about doms iitm.
Does one need to have a first class aggregate to apply or will securing first class in the final year do ? I feel this question is apt for Mumbai/Pune universities where the degree awarded takes only the final year marks into consideration.
Please throw some light on this matter.

The overall aggregate (of all subjects' marks in all semesters) will be considered when arriving at the aggregate score. The University degree certificate is required as a proof that there are no dues and all is clear in your degree.
I applied for IIT Madras MBA programme through CAT scores nd not selected despite a perc of 96.25 due to low DI score. On this forum I found that people are worried about the CAT cut off last year. As a result I have quoted below the short-listing criteria that IIT M declared for their 2009-2011 selection programme. Hope it helps-
Our shortlisting procedure is presented below:
* * * * *
First, the applicants are sorted into three mutually exclusive sets:
a) candidates who have declared only JMET scores,
b) candidates who have declared both JMET and CAT scores,
c) candidates who have declared only CAT scores.
Both, JMET and CAT have the following sections Quantitative (Q), Verbal (V), Logical Reasoning (LR) and Data Interpretation (DI). JMET separates LR and DI, while CAT combines them.
JMET and CAT assign different marks to each section. Therefore, each declared CAT score, in each section, has to be scaled and normalized to obtain its respective equivalent JMET score for enabling comparisons.
Once this is completed, a single scaled and normalized list of sectionwise scores data would be available for comparisons using the JMET scale as reference.
The applicants scores (scaled and normalized) in each section are sorted in descending order and then the section cut-off percentiles are used to shortlist applicants sectionwise. The Common Merit List (CML) including all categories (General, OBC, SC/ST and PD) is then identified as the intersection of scores that are present in ALL THREE LISTS Q, V, and LR + DI. Naturally, there could have been applicants who scored very well in one or two sections but not the other(s). This would imply that their scores would be included in the shortlists of the one or two sections they scored very well (as they would be inside the cut-off percentiles), but would be excluded from the section(s) in which they did not score well (as they would be outside the cut-off percentiles). Such applicants would not be included in the CML, irrespective of the overall JMET ranks or net CAT percentiles.
The CML is then used to shortlist candidates from the OBC, SC/ST and PD categories according to the Government of India norms/guidelines.
For candidates in set (b), both JMET and CAT scores are taken into account and the better of the two is chosen for shortlisting. In general, DoMS_IIT Madras always uses the principle of granting the benefit to the applicant when the case arises.
* * * * *
Please note that if an applicant (Open category) satisfies any one of the following two CUT-OFF SCHEMES then he/she is in our list of candidates invited to the GT/PI process.
CUT-OFF SCHEME 1 (as per the JMET or the equivalent scaled and normalized CAT scores):
Q(17.99/30) and
LR and DI (considered together)(36.17/60) and
V(16.5/30)
OR
CUT-OFF SCHEME 2 (as per the JMET or the equivalent scaled and normalized CAT scores):
Q(16.68/30) and
LR and DI (considered together)(34.50/60) and
V(14.99/30)
AND
Q*(LR+DI)*V greater than or equal to 15450.
Please note the Boolean OR and AND conditions...
ALL D BEST!!!
i am sorry by offending the respectable seniors by asking this meek question but i am simply not able to understand whether how do we apply thru our CAT scores??
will there be a column or something in the IIT M form?
please throw sufficient light ... ;)
sorry 4 d trouble & thanks in advance......

We can get above diplomacies 😉 Yes, the application form when applying to DoMS, IITM will have provision to fill in your CAT score. The regular place for JMET rank will continue to be as it is.
For those of you who have taken the CAT, hold on with your application queries. The admission form will be available for download from January onwards. IITs give a fair chance to students to apply after the CAT and JMET results are announced, so that one does not spend unnecessarily on application forms.
CAT result will be announced on 24th jan. and jmet 4th jan.....so how it is possible to apply on the basis of CAT score? Will not it be too late then...?
Hi,
One quick dumb question. I have applied for JMET. But application for all IITs ( through cat or jmet) whichever applicable is only after the JMET results are out, correct? Can somebody confirm. I dont want to miss deadlines if they around the corner.
Many Thanks!
