1. Hashim Thaci elected President of Kosovo

  1. Foreign Minister Hashim Thaci has been elected as President of Kosovo after winning the required simple majority in the elections held in Pristina. He will succeed Atifete Jahjaga.
  2. Kosovo unilaterally declared independence from Serbia in 2008. Kosovo and Serbia reached a landmark agreement to normalise their relations in April 2013.
  3. Thaci, who earlier served as the PM helped to negotiate a deal with Serbia that gave more autonomy to Kosovo's minority Serbs.
  4. He pledged to build a European Kosovo and enhance ties with the US.

2. India, UK Institutions sign MoU for collaboration in crop sciences

  1. Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology and a group of top UK research institutions signed an MoU for establishment of a joint India-UK collaboration programme in crop science.
  2. The MoU aims to enhance collaborative research, promote knowledge exchange, and support capacity-building to develop resilience in food security.
  3. The agreement envisages joint research projects on yield enhancement, disease resistance and drought resistance; research into crop re-breeding; and the translation of fundamental research into sustainable agriculture practice. It also contemplates the establishment of a joint Indo-UK Plant Science Centre in India.

3. India, Maldives sign agreement for avoidance of double taxation of income from International air transport

  1. The Union Cabinet has approved the signing of an agreement between India and Maldives for avoidance of double taxation of income from international air transport.
  2. The agreement provides for relief from double taxation for airline enterprises of India and Maldives by exemption of income derived by the enterprise of India from the operation of aircraft in international traffic, from Maldivian tax and vice-versa.
  3. Under the agreement, profits from operation of aircrafts in international traffic will be taxed in one country alone. Accordingly, the taxing right is conferred upon the country to which the enterprise belongs. The agreement will provide tax certainty for airline enterprises of India and Maldives.

4. Wawrinka wins Dubai ATP Tennis title

  1. Stanislas Wawrinka has won his ninth straight final by bagging the Dubai ATP Tennis title.
  2. Wawrinka defeated Marcos Baghdatis in straight sets with a 6-4, 7-6(13). This is his second ATP World Tour title of the year, following his third straight Chennai title in January, and his sixth straight victory over fellow 30-year-old Baghdatis.
  3. The Swiss player earned 500 Emirates ATP Rankings points and $511,750 in prize money.

5. Rozle Prezelj elected Chairman of IAAF Athletes' Commission

  1. Rozle Prezelj has been elected the Chairman of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Athletes' Commission in Monaco. Prezelj is a Slovenian high-jumper and replaces Frank Fredericks with immediate effect.
  2. Britain's marathon world record-holder Paula Radcliffe was nominated as the commission's Vice Chairwoman.
  3. IAAF is the international governing body for athletics.

6. Indian-origin engineer discovers 2D semiconducting material that could replace silicon chips

  1. University of Utah engineers have discovered a new kind of 2D semiconducting material for electronics which is made up of tin and oxygen or tin monoxide (SnO).
  2. The team was led by Indian-origin Ashutosh Tiwari. Only one atom thick 2D SnO material allows electrical charges to move through it much faster than conventional 3D materials like silicon. It will also facilitate development of much speedier computers and smartphones.
  3. The paper describing the material was published in the journal Advanced Electronic Materials.

7. Resul Pookutty becomes first Asian to win Golden Reel Award

  1. Famous sound designer Resul Pookutty has become the first Asian singer to win the Golden Reel Award for Best Sound for the documentary India's Daughter. Pookutty won the award for Best Sound & Music Editing: Television Documentary Short Form.
  2. The competing films and television documentaries included Mad Max: Fury Road, The Martian, Star Wars: The Force Awakens and The Revenant' among others.
  3. He was presented the award at the Motion Picture Sound Editors' (MPSE) 63rd annual Golden Reel Awards.
  4. Motion Picture Sound Editors was established in 1953 and is an honorary society of motion picture sound editors while the Golden Reel Award acknowledges the year's best work in the various areas of sound editing.

8. Dinesh Sharma elected as Chairperson of Governing Council of IFAD

  1. Dinesh Sharma elected as the Chairperson of the Governing Council of the International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD) for two years.
  2. IFAD was set-up in 1977 as the 13th Specialised Agency of the UN and strives to eradicate poverty and hunger in rural areas across the world. India is a founder-member of IFAD and a key contributor.
  3. IFAD is managed by the two main governing bodies i.e. the Governing Council and the Executive Board. The Governing Council is the highest decision-making body and comprises 176 member countries.

9. India's oldest first-class cricketer BK Garudachar passes away

  1. BK Garudachar, India's oldest first-class cricketer, passed away in Bengaluru at the age of 99.
  2. He represented Mysore (as Karnataka was called till 1974), United Province and Bombay.Garudachar played 27 matches between 1935 and 1946 and made 1126 runs at an average of 29.63.
  3. He was a right-handed batsman and a leg-break bowler.

10. BARC appoints KN Vyas as Director

  1. KN Vyas has been appointed as the Director of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre. He replaces Dr. Sekhar Basu.
  2. Vyas is a graduate from the 22nd batch of the BARC Training School and joined Fuel Design & Development Section of Reactor Engineering Division of the centre. He holds vast experience in design and analysis of nuclear reactor fuels and has been in the field of over three decades.
  3. Vyas has been conferred several awards, which include the Indian Nuclear Society Outstanding Service Award 2011, Homi Bhabha Science and Technology Award 2006, DAE Awards in the years 2007, 2008, 2012 and 2013. He is also a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineers.

11. Jabong appoints Muralikrishnan B as Chief Operating Officer

  1. Jabong recently appointed Muralikrishnan B as its COO.
  2. He will be responsible for overseeing the online apparel store's technology, product and digital marketing functions. He will also be responsible for assisting in product management at other Global Fashion Group companies including Dafiti, Namshi, Zalora and Lamoda.
  3. Earlier, Muralikrishnan served as the COO of IndiaProperty. He was also eBay India's country manager for two years following which he co-founded a digital health start-up in November 2013.

12. Gianni Infantino elected FIFA President

  1. Gianni Infantino was recently elected as FIFA President, replacing fellow Swiss Sepp Blatter.
  2. Infantino, a 45-year-old lawyer, entered the presidential race of the body when it became clear that Michel Platini, boss of European football's governing body Uefa, could not stand.
  3. The first round of voting failed to determine an outright winner, though Infantino led with 88 votes. However, he achieved a simple majority in round two, thereby winning the election.

1. Armaan Ebrahim wins FMSCI Motorsports Man of the Year trophy

  1. Car racer Armaan Ebrahim has bagged the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India's (FMSCI) Motorsports Man-of-the-Year trophy.
  2. The award was given for his performance in the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo Asia Series.
  3. Additionally, B.I. Chandhok received the Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to motorsports in the country.
  4. The FMSCI is the only national motor sport federation recognised by the Government of India for the promotion and control of motor sport in India and is affiliated to Indian Olympic Association.

2. Delhi airport wins three international awards

  1. Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) received three international awards, including for best airport by size in the Asia Pacific region. It also won awards for best airport by size & region-Asia Pacific (25-40 million passenger per annum) and second-best airport by region (Asia Pacific).
  2. The Airports Council International (ACI) has given away these awards for the year 2015.
  3. Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) is managed by Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) and is a three-way joint venture led by GMR group.

3. Rahul Sachdev wins first All-India Open Invitational Snooker Championship 2016

  1. Rahul Sachdev has won the 1st All India Open Invitational Snooker Championship 2016 in Aurangabad, defeating Pushpender Singh of Railways in the finals with 5-3 score.
  2. The All India Open Invitational Snooker Championship 2016 was organised by Billiards and Snooker Association of Aurangabad.

4. Mahesh Kumar Singla committee to consider ST status to six Assamese communities

  1. The government has set up a committee under Mahesh Kumar Singla, Special Secretary (Internal Security), Ministry of Home Affairs to recommend the modalities for granting Scheduled Tribe status to six communities in Assam.
  2. Koch Rajbongshi, Moran, Matak, Tai Ahom, Chutia and Adivasi (Tea Tribes) are the six communities.
  3. The committee will suggest the rules for shifting the existing status of these communities from OBC to ST, protecting the interests of existing tribes, a mechanism to ensure fairness of reservations within these six communities and related security considerations, among other measures.
  4. The committee will submit its report by May 31, 2016.

5. Sanjiv Kapoor joins Vistara as chief strategy and commercial officer

  1. Former COO of SpiceJet Ltd Sanjiv Kapoor has joined Vistara as its new chief strategy and commercial officer, replacing Giam Ming Toh, who will return to Singapore Airlines.
  2. Kapoor will be responsible for managing Vistara's commercial and planning functions, including strategy development, network planning, pricing and revenue management, sales and distribution, product development, branding, marketing and customer experience. He will also be responsible for in-flight services and ground operations.
  3. Earlier, he has worked with airlines in Asia, Europe, and the US in leadership and advisory roles. He has over 19 years of experience in the industry.

6. Peru declares emergency after oil spill hits rivers

  1. Peru has declared an emergency three weeks after a major oil pipeline burst, adversely affecting two rivers in the northwest part of the country. This is the third oil spill in less than a month.
  2. The pipeline spilled 3,000 barrels of crude oil into the Chiriaco and Morona Rivers, the main sources of water and food for several indigenous communities.
  3. The pipeline is owned by Petro Peru, a state-owned oil company which used to transport between 5000-6000 oil barrels daily.

7. Vice Admiral HCS Bisht appointed Commanding-in-Chief of Eastern Naval Command

  1. Vice Admiral HCS Bisht took over as the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Naval Command at Visakhapatnam.
  2. Bisht served as Director General of Indian Coast Guard (DGICG) and will succeed Vice-Admiral Satish Soni, who will be retiring after serving for 40 years.
  3. His earlier served as Executive Officer of the anti-submarine warfare (ASW) Corvette INS Ajay, Commander Work-up in the Indian Naval Work-up Team at Kochi, Fleet Gunnery Officer of the Eastern Fleet at Visakhapatnam, Commissioning Commanding Officer of the missile corvette INS Kora and Commander of the stealth frigate, INS Tabar.
  4. Additionally, Atul Kumar Jain took charge as the Chief of Staff of Eastern Naval Command.

8. Kerala declared India's first digital state

  1. President Pranab Mukherjee declared Kerala as the first digital state of India.
  2. The declaration was made after he launched a digital empowerment campaign in Kozhikode, which aims to bridge the digital divide by 2020.
  3. President Mukherjee also inaugurated a cyber park, launched the Kanivu Scheme and dedicated the Gender Park of the Department of Social Justice.
  4. Kerala has a mobile tele-density of 95% and over 60% of its population has access to the Internet.

9. Oscar-winning actor George Kennedy no more

  1. Oscar-winning actor George Kennedy has passed away at the age of 91.
  2. Kennedy had won the Academy Award for the classic movie 'Cool Hand Luke' in 1968 in the Best Supporting Actor category.
  3. Some of his other memorable performances include - The Dirty Dozen, Airport, The Gambler and Death on the Nile, among others.

10. MCX appoints Mrugank Paranjape as MD & CEO

  1. The Multi-Commodity Exchange (MCX) has appointed Mrugank Paranjape as Managing Director and CEO.
  2. The appointment will be for three years, subject to prior approvals from Sebi and other regulatory bodies.
  3. Paranjape is currently the head of DB Centre for Deutsche Bank, which provides front-office service.

Highlights of the Railway Budget 2016 - 17


Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu presented his second Railway Budget on 25th February, 2016 with the theme Reorganize, Restructure Rejuvenate Indian Railways: 'Chalo, Milkar Kuch Naya Karen'.


3 strategies to revitalise Indian Railways

  1. Nav Arjan - New revenues
  2. Nav Manak - New norms
  3. Nav Sanrachna - New Structures

Financial Performance:

  1. 2015-16- Ordinary Working Expenses (OWE) decreased in the revised estimates (RE) to Rs.1,10,690 crore from Rs.1,19,410, leading to savings to the tune of Rs.8,720 crore and offsetting most of the revenue shortfall. Hence, the expected Operating Ratio (operating expenses as a percentage of revenue) in RE is 90% vi-a-vis 91.3% in 2014-15.
  2. 2016-17- The targeted OR this year has been set at 92%, considering the immediate impact of the 7th Pay Commission and reductions planned in diesel and electricity consumption. The aim is to curtail OWE by 11.6%. The aim is to achieve a revenue target of Rs.1,84,820 crore.

Steps to improve quality of travel

For unreserved passengers -

  • Antyodaya Express - A long-distance, fully unreserved superfast service.
  • Deen Dayalu coaches - Two-four of these unreserved coaches will be added to a few long-distance trains with amenities like potable water and more mobile charging points.

For reserved passengers-

  • Humsafar - A fully air-conditioned, third AC service with an optional service for meals.
  • Tejas - Showcasing the future of train travel in India with a speed of 130 kmph and above, this train will have on-board services such as entertainment, local cuisine, Wi-Fi, etc.
  • UDAY - Utkrisht Double-Decker Air-conditioned Yatri Express (UDAY) will ply on the busiest routes and will be an overnight double-decker.

Steps to ease the ticketing process

  • e-ticketing facility will be compatible with debit/credit cards. Bar-coded tickets, scanners will be provided at major stations on a pilot basis to curb ticketless travel.
  • Broadening of Vikalp scheme - The expanded scheme will provide choice of accommodation in specific trains to waitlisted passengers.
  • CCTV coverage will be made mandatory at tatkaal counters to improve the service along with periodic audit of the PRS website.

Towards Swachh Rail Swachh Bharat

  • To achieve this objective, the 'Clean my Coach' service through SMS will cover the whole of India.
  • Ranking of A1 and A stations based on periodic third party audit and passenger feedback.
  • Waste segregation and recycling centres will be established.
  • An additional 30,000 bio-toilets will be installed.

More ticketing stops from now on!

The Railway Minister proposed to convert all operational/technical halts into commercial halts in order to increase patronage and benefit the common man.

For e.g.: Passengers can board/alight at Bhusaval, Igatpuri and Kasara, which are the operational halts for the Nagpur-Mumbai Duronto Express.


Rail Mitra Sewa

  • The Sarathi Seva in Konkan Railway will be expanded to help disabled and old passengers.
  • Steps will be taken to help passengers book battery-operated cars, porter services, etc. on a paid basis.

Doing it the SMART way

In order to improve comfort of passengers, Specially Modified Aesthetic Refreshing Travel (SMART) coaches will be designed. These will have increased carrying capacity, automatic doors, bar-code readers, bio-vacuum toilets, water-level indicators, accessible dustbins, ergonomic seating, improved aesthetics, vending machines, entertainment screens, LED advertising boards, etc.


Improving customer interface

The following steps have been taken to ensure fulfilment of customer needs:

  1. GPS-based digital displays inside coaches.
  2. Installation of a high-tech centralised network of 20,000 screens across 2000 stations.
  3. Pilgrimage centres:
  • Provision of passenger amenities and beautification of stations that are also major pilgrimage sites, including Ajmer, Amritsar, Bihar Sharif, Chengannur, Dwarka, Gaya, Haridwar, Mathura, Nagapattinam, Nanded, Nasik, Pali, Parasnath, Puri, Tirupati, Vailankanni, Varanasi and Vasco
  • Plying Aastha circuit trains to connect important pilgrim centres.
  1. High Speed Rail: High-speed passenger corridor from Ahmedabad to Mumbai is underway.
  2. Entertainment:
  • To invite FM Radio stations for entertainment in trains.
  • Extend 'Rail Bandhu' to all reserved classes of travellers and in all regional languages.

Upgrade suburban rail services in major metros

  • Approval for MUTP III.
  • Elevated suburban corridors between Churchgate-Virar and between CSTM-Panvel.
  • Reviving the Ring Railway system in Delhi
  • Development in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai and Thiruvananthapuram.

Winning back the lost modal share

  1. Expanding the freight basket of IR - To start time-tabled freight container, parcel and special commodity trains on a pilot basis.
  2. Rationalising the tariff structure -
  • Undertake review of tariff policy.
  • Permit multi-point loading/unloading and apply differentiated tariffs.
  1. Building terminal capacity -
  • To develop Rail side logistics parks and warehousing in PPP mode
  • Inaugurate India's first rail auto hub in Chennai.
  • Development of cold storage facilities on vacant land near freight terminals.

Navarambh - Plans for a fresh start

  1. Navinikaran (Structural Interventions): The Minister proposed to reorganise the Railway Board by setting up cross-functional directorates in the board and bolstering PPP cell to improve ease of doing business with IR.
  2. Sashaktikaran (Improving planning):
  • To set up a Railway Planning & Investment Organisation for drafting medium (5 years) and long (10 years) term corporate plans.
  • To prepare a National Rail Plan.

3. Aekikaran (Consolidation): To form a holding company of companies owned by IR.

4. Shodh aur vikas (Investing in the future): To set up an R&D organisation-Special Railway Establishment for Strategic Technology & Holistic Advancement (SRESTHA).

5. Vishleshan (Analysing data): To set up a cross-functional team called Special Unit for Transportation Research and Analytics (SUTRA) to conduct detailed analytics that will result in enhanced investment decisions and operations.

6. Navrachna (Innovation): To provide innovation grants to employees, start-ups and small businesses.


Avataran - Seven Missions to transform IR

  • Mission 25 Tonne for 25 tonne axle load
  • Mission Zero Accident for safety
  • Mission PACE (Procurement and Consumption Efficiency)
  • Mission Raftaar for high speed train services
  • Mission Hundred for commissioning 100 sidings/ freight terminals
  • Mission Beyond Book Keeping for accounting reforms
  • Mission Capacity Utilisation to prepare a blueprint for making use of the capacity

Sustainability and Social Initiatives

  • To tie up with the Ministry of Health for exchange between Railways hospitals and Government hospitals.
  • Introduce 'AYUSH' systems in 5 Railway hospitals
  • To provide toilets and air-conditioning in cabs for loco pilots.
  • To reduce energy consumption in non-traction area by 10% to 15% with the use of LED lights.
  • Action plan drawn up for environmental accreditation, water management and waste to energy conversion. More than 2,000 locations provided with Rain Water Harvesting facility.
  • Using composite sleepers made of recycled plastic waste will be used.
  • 32 stations and 10 coaching depots have been identified for installation of water recycling plants in the coming years.

Tourism:

  • Partnering with state governments for operating tourist circuit trains
  • Upgrading National Rail Museum, promoting tourism through railway museums and UNESCO World Heritage sites.
  • To spread awareness about our national animal (the tiger), provide complete packages including train journey, safaris and accommodation to cover the wildlife circuit comprising Kanha, Pench and Bandhavgarh.

Other salient efforts

1. Measures for the differently-abled: Steps will be taken to provide at least one Divyang-friendly toilet at each platform in A1 class stations along with sufficient provision of wheelchairs.


2. Travel Insurance to passengers: Plans to offer optional travel insurance for rail journeys at the time of booking.


3. Janani Sewa: Children's menu items on trains.

1. Justice HL Dattu appointed as Chairperson of National Human Rights Commission

  1. Former Chief Justice of India Justice Handyala Lakshminarayanaswamy Dattu has been appointed as the Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission of India.
  2. Dattu is the seventh Chairperson of the Commission and has replaced Justice Cyriac Joseph, who was the acting Chairperson of NHRC.
  3. Chief Justice Dattu is the 42nd Chief Justice of India and has been associated with several significant judgments. He was on the bench that expanded the Indian jurisprudence on death sentence cases by commuting the death penalty of terror convict Devinder Pal Singh Bhullar to life term over mental illness and an inordinate delay in deciding his mercy plea by the government.
  4. Justice Dattu also pronounced a landmark verdict giving a ruling that "bail is the rule and jail an exception" while granting bail to five big corporate in the 2G case.

2. Indian Railways launches bar coding system for unreserved tickets

  1. Indian Railways has launched bar coding system for unreserved tickets to prevent revenue leakage and bring transparency in the ticketing system in New Delhi.
  2. The bar coding feature includes details like ticket number, stock number, fare, source station, destination station, number of adults, number of children, train type, class code and date of journey, that are printed in the form of encrypted QR code.

3. RCom CIO quits; joins Royal Philips

  1. Alpna J Doshi has quit as Reliance Communications' Chief Information Officer.
  2. She had been associated with the company for more than 6 years and was also serving as the Chief Executive Officer of Reliance Tech Services, the IT organisation of India's integrated telecom company (RCom).
  3. Doshi will be joining Royal Philips as Group Chief Information Officer, business transformation and IT worldwide and will be based out of the company's Netherlands headquarters.

4. Akhilesh Yadav launches National Food Security Act in UP

  1. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has launched the National food security Act, 2013.
  2. The act aims to benefit more than 75% of the state's population where every beneficiary will be provided with five kg foodgrain, that includes wheat at a rate of Rs 2 per kg and rice at the rate of Rs 3 per kg.
  3. As per reports, its implementation would benefit more than 1.64 crore people in over 40.94 lakh households.

5. Jet Airways CFO Amit Agarwal gets additional charge of CEO

  1. Jet Airways CFO Amit Agarwal has been given the additional charge of new acting CEO and will replace Gaurang Shetty.
  2. Shetty, who is the Senior Vice President for commercial at Jet Airways, was given the acting charge of the post after the then CEO Cramer Ball quit in December last year.
  3. It may be noted that this is Jet Airways' sixth appointment for the position of CEO since April 2013 when the airline offloaded a part of stake to Abu Dhabi's national airline Etihad.

6. Nobel Peace Prize receives record 376 nominations

  1. As per official reports, Nobel Peace Prize for 2016 has received a record 376 nominations.The Norwegian Nobel Committee said that there are 228 individuals and 148 organizations among the contenders for the prestigious prize.
  2. that includes governments, lawmakers, university professors and previous peace prize laureates. The earlier record of 278 nominations was set in 2014.

7. Basanta Bahadur Rana wins gold in 50km race walk at National Championships

  1. Olympian Basanta Bahadur Singh Rana has won the gold medal in men's 50km race walk event at the National Championships held in Jaipur.
  2. Rana achieved this feat in 4 hours 7 minutes 24 seconds to win the gold while Chandan Singh and Jitender Singh Rathore won silver and bronze respectively.
  3. In junior women's 10km race walk competition, Neena K T finished first while Bhawna Jat and Priyanka Patel finished second and third respectively.
  4. In junior men's 10km race walk competition, Vikash Singh finished first while Naveen and Eknath Turamberker finished second and third respectively.

8. Forbes' 2016: Bill Gates stays world's richest, Mukesh Ambani 36th

  1. According to Forbes' annual ranking of billionaires, Bill Gates continues to dominate the top spot as the world's richest person with a net worth of $75 billion. He has been number one for 3 years in a row and topped the list 17 out of 22 years.
  2. Spanish billionaire Amancio Ortega, founder of clothing retail giant Zara and billionaire philanthropist and Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett are second and third in the list.
  3. Reliance Industries Limited Chairman Mukesh Ambani is positioned at 36, leading the list of 84 Indian billionaires in 2016.
  4. This year the Forbes' list of the world's billionaires includes 1,810 billionaires as compared to 1,826 last year. The total annual net worth this year is reported to be $6.5 billion.

9. Unilever's Udayan Dutt joins Reckitt Benckiser

  1. Udayan Dutt, Unilever's HR director, marketing for South Asia has joined Reckitt Benckiser as the Regional HR director for South Asia.
  2. Dutt joined Unilever in 2006 as General Manager- Reward for the South Asia and later became Director- HR and Corporate Relations, Sri Lanka in 2012.
  3. Dutt is an alumnus of XLRI, Jamshedpur and has previously worked with Hewitt Associates, Sasken Communication Technologies Limited and Bharti Cellular Limited.

10. India Signs Financing Agreement with World Bank for US $300 Million

  1. A financing agreement for IDA credit of US$ 300 for the "Madhya Pradesh Higher Education Quality Improvement Project" was signed with the World Bank.
  2. The Objective of the project is to improve student outcomes especially of disadvantaged groups in selected Higher Education Institutions and to increase the effectiveness of the Higher Education System in Madhya Pradesh.
  3. The project has three components that is Grants Support to Higher Education Institutions, State Level Initiatives and Improving System Management.
  4. The closing date of Madhya Pradesh Higher Education Quality Improvement Project is 31st August, 2021.

11. Portugal nominates ex-refugee chief Antonio Guterres for UN Secretary-General

  1. Portugal Government has nominated former Portuguese Prime Minister and head of the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) Antonio Guterres as a candidate for General Secretary at United Nations.
  2. Guterres led UNHCR at the beginning of the refugee crisis caused by the war in Syria, served as Prime Minister in 1995-2002 and as UN Refugee Agency High Commissioner in 2005-2015.
  3. According to the UN Charter, the UN Security Council recommends a candidate to the General Assembly, where he or she must garner no less than two-thirds of the votes to be appointed Secretary General.

1.Poet Bhagwati Lal Vyas selected for 2015 Bihari Puraskar

  1. Eminent poet Dr Bhagwati Lal Vyas has been chosen for the 2015 Bihari Puraskar for his anthology of Rajasthani poems 'Katha Sun Aawe Hai Sabad'.
  2. In his poetry, Vyas talks about the disagreeable changes in human relations, social disparity and loss of human values. However, positivity and his faith in human life are also dealt with in some of his works.
  3. His other popular works includes, Shatabdi Niruttar, Footpath Par Chiriya Nachti Hai and Suraj Leelti Ghatiyan.
  4. Bihari Puraskar was instituted by KK Birla Foundation in 1991 and is named after the famous Hindi poet Bihari Lal Chaube.

2. Former New Zealand cricket captain Martin Crowe passes away

  1. Former New Zealand captain Martin Crowe recently passed away due to cancer in Auckland at the age of 53.
  2. He played 77 tests and 143 one-day internationals for New Zealand in a 13-year career. He scored 5,444 Test runs at an average of 45.36 with 17 centuries.

3. Akito Tachibana appointed MD of Toyota Kirloskar Motor

  1. Akito Tachibana has been appointed as the Managing Director of Toyota Kirloskar Motor. He will replace the incumbent MD Naomi Ishii.
  2. Tachibana currently heads technical, purchase and quality assurance functions at Toyota Kirloskar and will take charge as the MD in April.
  3. Earlier, he has served as the head of corporate and product planning at Toyota Kirloskar's units in Thailand, Vietnam and the US.

4. Paytm introduces Hindi interface on its app to expand seller base

  1. Mobile commerce platform Paytm has introduced Hindi interface on its app in order to widen its seller base in tier-II and tier-III cities.
  2. This feature will help Paytm expand its online-to-offline business for shipping large appliances and electronics beyond the current base of 10 cities.
  3. According to Sudhanshu Gupta, Vice-President of business at Paytm, "The top-10 cities of seller-app usage include metros as well as cities like Ahmedabad, Surat, Jaipur and others. These sellers usually deal in unstructured categories such as fashion, home and lifestyle products, and the demand to develop a local-language interface has come from the seller meetings".
  4. The launch is in accordance with the company's target of reaching the target of 5 lakh sellers by the end of 2016.

5. Intel appoints Nivruti Rai as India Site General Manager

  1. Intel Corporation has appointed Nivruti Rai as the Intel India Site General Manager. Rai will replace Kumud Srinivasan, who will relocate to the US.
  2. Rai has been associated with Intel for more than two decades and has worked at several technical and business management positions across different functions in both the US and India. She is currently serving as the Vice-President and Director of R&D in Platform Engineering Group (PEG), Intel Corporation.
  3. Rai holds a Master of Sciences degree from the University of Lucknow and a MS Degree in Electrical Engineering from Oregon State University.

6. March 3rd observed as World Wildlife Day

  1. World Wildlife Day is annually observed on March 3 in order to create awareness about the importance of safeguarding planet Earth's varied wildlife population.
  2. This year the theme was "The future of wildlife is in our hands".
  3. As per a report by the World Wildlife Fund, the global wildlife population has decreased by 53% per cent between 1970 and 2015.
  4. During its 68th session, the UN General Assembly decided to declare March 3rd as World Wildlife Day.
  5. The day is observed to reiterate the significance of the many beautiful and varied forms of wild fauna and flora and the host of benefits that we attain by ensuring their safety.

7. Delhi becomes first state to launch HPV vaccine as public health programme in schools

  1. Delhi became the first city in India to launch the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine as a public health programme for school children. The HPV vaccine protects people against the group of 150-odd HPVs, some of which can cause cervical cancer.
  2. Around 1-1.5 lakh girls studying in Class VI in government schools will be vaccinated in the first year and the task will be completed in two phases during the current academic year.
  3. The programme involves providing two doses of the vaccine; the first and second dose will be administered within 30 days of each other. A third booster dose will be given within 240 days of the first vaccine, which will be covered in the next phase.
  4. The Delhi government will buy the vaccines from GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and MSD Pharmaceuticals at a subsidised cost of Rs.450 per dose.

8. NASA astronaut Scott Kelly returns to Earth after spending 340 days in space

  1. NASA astronaut Scott Kelly and Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko returned to Earth after spending 340 days aboard the International Space Station (ISS). With this, Kelly has now spent a total of 540 days of his life in space-the longest time period by an American astronaut.
  2. During this time, the crew conducted around 400 investigations and studies to collate information for NASA's 'Journey to Mars' mission.
  3. This included research on how the human body adjusts to weightlessness, isolation, radiation and the stress of long-duration space flight.
  4. Over the course of the year, Kelly documented his stay in ISS by tweeting nearly 1,000 images of the Earth from different angles. During the mission, Kelly also went on three space walks to carry out maintenance tasks.

9. Switzerland tops the 2016 Global Energy Architecture Performance Index

  1. The World Economic Forum (WEF) recently released the fourth edition of the Global Energy Architecture Performance Index Report 2016 (EAPI), which ranks 126 countries on different parameters.
  2. Switzerland tops the list and is followed by Norway and Sweden.
  3. The index helps countries address energy transformation challenges and spot opportunities across their energy systems. The 126 countries were rated on 3 parameters, namely affordability, environmental sustainability, security and access.
  4. India has been ranked 90th on the list as the study noted that the country is facing challenges like the need to improve energy delivery in order to meet its growth targets and expand access. However, electrification has progressed and is now accessible to 79% of India's population.

10. Whitfield Diffie and Martin Hellman win ACM 2015 A M Turing Award

  1. Whitfield Diffie and Martin Hellman have won the Association for Computing Machinery's 2015 AM Turing Award for their contributions to modern cryptography.
  2. Whitfield Diffie is former Vice-President and Chief Security Officer of Sun Microsystems, while Martin E. Hellman is Professor emeritus of Electrical Engineering at Stanford University.
  3. The duo's paper titled "New Directions in Cryptography'' which was published in 1976 is a groundbreaking study that introduced the ideas of public-key cryptography and digital signatures, which are presently the foundation for regularly-used security protocols on the Internet.
  4. The award is often referred to as the "Nobel Prize for Computing" and includes a prize money of a $1 million funded by Google.

11. Japan pledges Rs.5,700-crore loan for highways in the north-east

  1. Japan International Cooperation Agency has pledged an overseas development assistance of Rs.5,700 crores for improving highways in India's north-east region.
  2. As per reports, the assistance will be provided for widening and upgradation to two-lane with paved shoulder and geometric improvements of NH-54 in Mizoram and NH-51 in Meghalaya.
  3. The annual interest rates on the loan for construction and procurement of goods & services is 1.4% and for consulting is 0.01%, while repayment of principal amount will be made in 20 years after the disbursement period of 10 years.

12. TCS and GE join hands to develop digital solutions

  1. Recently, Indian software major TCS entered into a strategic alliance with US-based multinational conglomerate General Electric (GE) for the GE Digital Alliance Program through which it would develop digital solutions to enhance the productivity of mobile workforces and assets in motion.
  2. This will be achieved by leveraging Predix, GE's cloud platform for industrial internet.
  3. TCS and GE will collaborate to establish an 'industry solutions ecosystem' by leveraging TCS' business and digital expertise to enrich GE's Predix platform.
  4. TCS has already developed new internet of things (IoT) solutions on the Predix platform, including Satellite Image Analytics, Supply Chain Monitoring, Prognostic Maintenance, and Engine Telematics.

1. Jerry Pinto chosen for the 2016 Windham-Campbell Prize

  1. Columnist and author Jerry Pinto has been chosen for the 2016 Windham-Campbell Prize. He is among the nine recipients of the annual prize, which is awarded to English-language writers "for their literary achievements or their potential".
  2. Pinto won the award for his first novel 'Em and The Big Hoom' in the fiction category. The book was published in 2012.
  3. The Donald Windham Sandy M. Campbell Literature Prizes is an American literary award that was established at Yale University in 2011 and offers prizes in fiction, non-fiction and drama.

2. Playwright Ratan Thiyam to be honoured with Lifetime Achievement Award

  1. Veteran playwright and director Ratan Thiyam has been chosen for Lifetime Achievement Award in the 11th edition of the Mahindra Excellence Theatre Awards (META).
  2. Thiyam has been recognised for creating a new language in theatre and enhancing the art form in various roles as writer, director, designer, composer and choreographer.
  3. Former recipients of the award include Zohra Sehgal, Badal Sarkar, Khaled Chowdhury, Ebrahim Alkazi, Girish Karnad and Heisnam Kanhailal.
  4. META is one of the Indian theatre industry's premier awards. It rewards all aspects of theatre production. It aims to raise awareness and appreciation of Indian theatre.

3. CCEA approves winding up of National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council

  1. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has given its approval for winding up of National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council (NMCC) with immediate effect as the Council has fulfilled the mandate for which it was constituted.
  2. The NMCC was established in 2004 as a part of the Common Minimum Programme (CMP) of the UPA government to provide a continuing forum for policy dialogue to energise and sustain the growth of manufacturing industry.

4. Rajya Sabha passes Carriage by Air (Amendment) Bill, 2015

  1. Rajya Sabha has passed the Carriage by Air (Amendment) Bill, 2015. The bill will aid in enhancing compensation for air travellers in case of death, injury, lost baggage or even inordinate delay in flights.
  2. It also intends to change the liability limits in case of damage, loss, or delay of baggage and cargo as per global counterparts.
  3. The bill was presented by the Union Minister of Civil Aviation P Ashok Gajapathi Raju and now has been passed in both Houses of the Parliament.
  4. The legislation will allow the government to revise the liability limits of airlines in line with the Montreal Convention, which was acceded to by India in May 2009.

5. CCS clears acquisition of two AWACS

  1. The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) has cleared a proposal to acquire two more Airborne Warning and Control Systems (AWACS) at the cost of Rs.7,500 crore under a tripartite deal with Israel and Russia.
  2. AWACS are advanced radars mounted on an aircraft to give 360 degree coverage to detect incoming aircraft and missiles at long ranges. It also helps monitor the military build-up, troop and aircraft movements nearly 200 km while flying.
  3. India had previously procured 3 Phalcon AWACS, Israel radars mounted on Russian IL-76 transport aircraft, in 2003 for 1 billion dollars. These AWACS were inducted in Indian Air Force in January 2009.

6. Flipkart to launch online wallet to face rivals like Freecharge and Paytm

  1. Flipkart is all set to launch its digital wallet, which will enable it to cut costs related to handling cash on product returns, in addition to offering users a new payment method.
  2. The digital wallet called 'Flipkart Money' has been launched on the company's Android app, where users can hold a balance of Rs.10,000 at a time. Consumers can utilise the wallet for purchases of a maximum of Rs.25,000 a month using their credit cards, debit cards or net banking.
  3. 'Flipkart Money' will enable people to enjoy the benefits of single click payments, cash backs and discounts. Also, the regular cash back services will ensure that the customer stays loyal to the platform.

7. Indian-American investor Sunil Sabharwal appointed as Alternate Executive Director of IMF

  1. Indian American investor Sunil Sabharwal has assumed position as the Alternate Executive Director of the International Monetary Fund.
  2. Considering that the US has over 16.81% of the total IMF voting share, this is one of the most powerful positions in the organisation.
  3. Sabharwal has previously served as board chairman of Ogone, a European e-commerce payment services firm and advised Warburg Pincus on its acquisition of easycash.
  4. He is an alumnus of Ohio State University and the London Business School.

8. Amazon to set up second-largest global delivery centre in Hyderabad

  1. Global e-commerce player Amazon is going to set up its second-largest global delivery centre outside the US in Hyderabad, which could attract a large portion of its proposed investments of $2 billion into India.
  2. This comes a year after the e-commerce firm decided to build one of its largest Indian fulfilment centres over an area of 2,80,000 sq ft near Hyderabad.
  3. It should be noted that Apple is going to set up its largest technology development centre outside the US in the south Indian city and Google has also announced to have a huge campus there.
  4. Amazon has reportedly been allotted an area of 10 acres to build 2.9 million square feet development centre to house a 13,500 member strong team. The current headcount at Amazon development centre at Hyderabad is around 1,000 across multiple offices.

9. UNHCR, UNICEF launch Blue Dot support centers for migrating families across Europe

  1. UNHCR, UNICEF have launched a Twenty Child and Family Support Hubs, known as Blue Dots. These support centers will acts as a special support centers for children and families along the most frequently used migration routes in Europe.
  2. This will also help in protecting the growing numbers of children and others with specific needs arriving in Europe.
  3. The 20 Blue Dot hubs will be fully operational in the next three months and will include service like restoring family links, private rooms for counseling, legal counseling and safe spaces for women and children to sleep, among others.

10. Former Lok Sabha Speaker Purno Agitok Sangma passes away

  1. Former Lok Sabha Speaker Purno Agitok Sangma has passed away, aged 68.
  2. Sangma was the first tribal individual to hold the post of cabinet minister in 1995 and the Lok Sabha Speaker in 1996.
  3. Sangma was a nine-time member of the house and. He also held important portfolios in the Union government.
  4. He was also the Chief Minister of Meghalaya from 1988 to 1990 and Leader of the Opposition in the State Assembly from 1990 to 1991.

1. National Safety Day observed on March 4

  1. National Safety Day was observed across the country on 4 March 2016. The day is annually observed by the National Safety Council to commemorate its establishment and enhance the safety awareness among people.
  2. The aim is to prevent and lessen the loss of life including various human being problems and their financial loss through availing them with safety, health and environment related support services.
  3. The National Safety Council was established on 4 March 1966 under the Societies Act in Mumbai and has a membership of 8,000.
  4. Additionally, National Safety Week will be celebrated from 4 March to the 10 March 2016.


 2.  Journalist Shantanu Guha Ray's new book released

  1. Journalist Shantanu Guha Ray's new book called "Fixed: Cash and Corruption in Cricket" released recently.
  2. The book examines the corruption charges against players, cricket administrators and bookies. According to the author, this betting industry is an extremely secretive and complex network that works at various levels.


3. Dadasaheb Phalke Award to be conferred on actor Manoj Kumar

  1. Veteran actor and director Manoj Kumar is to be conferred the 47th Dadasaheb Phalke Award for the year 2015.
  2. The award is conferred by the Indian government for outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian cinema. The award consists of a Swarn Kamal (Golden Lotus), a cash prize of Rs.10 lakhs and a shawl.
  3. Kumar is also a recipient of National Film Award for the film "Upkaar". In 1992, he was honoured with the Padma Shri.
  4. Some of his notable films are Hariyali Aur Raasta, Upkaar, Patthar Ke Sanam, Neel Kamal, Purab Aur Paschim, Roti Kapda Aur Makaan, and Kranti. He is known for acting in and directing films with patriotic themes.
  5. Some of the former recipients of the award are Dilip Kumar, Shashi Kapoor, Gulzar, Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Soumitra Chatterjee, Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen.


4. IFC launches ₹300 million Uridashi Masala Bonds in Japan

  1. International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, has launched its first Uridashi Masala Bond.
  2. The bonds are valued at Rs.300 million and will be utilised to promote the private sector development in India.
  3. Masala bonds are rupee-denominated instruments sold only to offshore investors, while Uridashi bonds are sold to Japanese household investors. IFC has played a prominent role in India's capital-markets development, rolling out a $3 billion rupee-denominated Masala bond program over the past two years.
  4. It may be noted that India is IFC's largest client country. IFC's committed portfolio in India totaled more than $5 billion as of June 30, 2015.


5. Jitu Rai wins gold in 50m pistol event at ISSF World Cup

  1. Indian shooter Jitu Rai has bagged the 50m pistol gold at the ISSF World Cup in Bangkok. The gold medal winner scored 191.3 points in the final round.
  2. Pang Wei and Wang Zhiwei occupy the second and third spot respectively. India's Prakash Nanjappa shot 549 in the qualification round to be placed 17th.
  3. Rai is the current 50m pistol gold medallist at both the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games, winning the championships in 2014.

6.  Ex-Gujarat Chief Secretary Sudhir Mankad, TCS CEO appointed to RBI board

  1. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has appointed former Gujarat Chief Secretary Sudhir Mankad, TCS CEO Natarajan Chandrasekaran and Bharat Narotam Doshi, non-executive chairman of Mahindra & Mahindra as as non-official directors to the board of Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
  2. Mankad will act  as part-time non-official director on the central board of the RBI for a period of four years while  Chandrasekaran and Doshi have also been appointed for the same tenure.
  3. The Reserve Bank's affairs are governed by a central board of directors. The board is appointed by the government of India. Besides the RBI Governor, there cannot be more than four Deputy Governors as full-time official directors of the central bank.


7.  Film archivist PK Nair no more

  1. Indian film archivist and scholar Paramesh Krishnan Nair has passed away at the age of 82.
  2. Nair was the founder and former director of the National Film Archive of India (NFAI) in 1964 and worked at the NFAI for over three decades, collecting films from India and from all over the world. He has been credited with acquiring a whopping 12000 films for the archive.

8. Rahul Bhatia joins 'Make in India' brand team in new start-up

  1. Promoter of Interglobe Aviation (IndiGo Airlines) Rahul Bhatia, and Lightspeed India Partners MD Bejul Somaia have joined V Sunil and Mohit Dhar Jayal, to launch a start-up, Motherland Ventures.
  2. The new venture will design and sell lifestyle consumer products, including customized holiday experiences, luggage.
  3. Motherland initially started as US advertising agency Wieden + Kennedy's creative magazine, covering Indian pop culture.
  4. Sunil and Jayal, who quit Wieden + Kennedy in January, helped build brands such as Royal Enfield, Incredible India and Make in India.

9.  Sterlite Tech signs deals with Airtel, Tata, Spectranet

  1. Sterlite Technologies, which is rolling out a fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) network in the country, has signed partnership deals with mobile carriers Airtel and Tata Teleservices, and internet service provider Spectranet.
  2. The company till date has enabled more than 165,000 fibre-connected homes across six major cities such as Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, Chennai and Ahmedabad, and has over 50,000 active subscribers, as a part of pilot programme.
  3. Sterlite Technologies is the only fully-integrated fibre player in the country. Its competitors include US-based Corning Inc., Himachal Futuristic Communications Limited (HFCL) and Aksh Optifibre. Some firms import glass preform to draw fibre cables locally.


10. World's costliest train station opens in New York

  1. World's costliest train station has been opened at the site of the World Trade Centre which was destroyed in the 9/11 attacks.
  2. Built at a cost of $3.85 billion, the centre connects the PATH commuter rail to New Jersey with New York subway lines, provides indoor pedestrian access to the Trade Centre towers and will also house an enormous shopping and restaurant plaza.
  3. The structure has been designed by Spanish-Swiss architect Santiago Calatrava and named Oculus. It is a giant oval made up of steel ribs and glass laid out in elliptical shape, reaching for the sky like wings of a bird.
  4. The transit hub will serve 250,000 people and more than 200,000 commuters each day, making it the third-largest transportation centre in the city.

Daily Current Affairs - 6th and 7th March 2016, Sunday and Monday 

1. Andrew Holness sworn in as Jamaican PM

(i) Recently, Andrew Holness was sworn in as the new Prime Minister of the Jamaica. Holness, a former education minister and member of the Jamaican Labour Party has promised to create jobs, boost the economy and improve education and healthcare.

(ii) In the election that concluded recently Holness defeated, Jamaica's first female head of government Portia Simpson Miller. 

(iii) Among the various challenges that the newly elected PM will be dealing with the most urgent are rising unemployment and economic debt of the nation. 

2. Construction of Europe's biggest floating solar farm underway in UK

(i) As per recent repots, the biggest floating farm is Europe is being constructed in UK on a reservoir. 

(ii) More than 23,000 solar photovoltaic panels have been laid on the surface of the Queen Elizabeth II reservoir near Walton-on-Thames, Surrey. 

(iii) The solar farm is expected to generate 5.8 million kilowatt hours of electricity in a year and will be of the size of eight football pitches. As per a statement by Thames Water, construction of the solar farm will be competed by the end of March 2016.

3. South Korea passes its first antiterrorism bill

(i) South Korea  recently passed its first anti-terror bill after opposition members delayed the vote for nine days with speeches and discussions. Nearly, 160 parliament members voted for the bill, with one voting against it. 

(ii) President Park Geun-hye's government called for the bill's speedy passage, citing threats from North Korea following its recent nuclear test and rocket launch. The anti-terror bill empowers the country's spy agency to wiretap phone conversations and collect personal information of suspects. 

(iii) It also calls for the establishment of an anti-terror centre tasked with implementing security measures for major state events and issuing terror advisories.

4. SBI among 4 new foreign banks allowed to operate in Myanmar

(i) India's State Bank of India along with three other banks, which are the Vietnam's Bank for Investment and Development, Taiwan's E.SUN Commercial Bank, South Korea's Shinhan Bank have been given the initial approval by the Central Bank of Myanmar to open 100 per cent-owned branches in Myanmar. 

(ii) This move by Myanmar government is aimed at attracting investment in its country, which was under military rule for decades and impacted by western sanctions as well. 

5. Capital Area Bank becomes first entity to receive RBI's licence to start operations as a small finance bank

(i) As per recent development, a Jalandhar based local bank, Capital Local Area Bank became the first entity to receive the Reserve Bank of India's licence to start operations as a small finance bank.

(ii) In a statement, managing director of Capital Local Area Bank, Sarvjit Singh Samra said, "It plans to start small finance bank operations on April 13... It plans to open 10 new branches on the first day." 

(iii) In addition the bank plans to have over 200 branches and a total business of Rs 11, 800 crore in the next five years. In its first five years the bank will focus on the northern region. 

6. HDFC Bank extends Rs 450 crore loan to Flipkart

(i) As per recent developments, private lender HDFC extended Rs 450 crore loan to India's largest online marketplace Flipkart. 

(ii) The agreement to this effect was inked on February 23, through Flipkart India, which is one of the two key entities that controls the e-tailer's Indian operations. 

(iii) The reasons for securing the credit from HDFC has not been specified by the company however as per bankers, small and large companies borrow credit from banks for short-term operational needs, especially when raising fresh capital may take more time.

7. Flipkart to launch Flipkart Money an online wallet

(i) Flipkart recently announced that it is all set to launch a digital wallet called Flipkart Money, which will help in cutting costs related to handling cash on product returns, in addition to offering users a new payment method.

(ii) The wallet has been launched on the company's Android app, wherein users can hold a balance of Rs.10,000 at a time. Consumers can utilise the wallet for purchases of a maximum of Rs.25,000 a month using their credit cards, debit cards or net banking.

(iii) 'Flipkart Money' will enable people to enjoy the benefits of single-click payments, cash backs and discounts.

8. Reliance Jio to provide free wi-fi at 6 stadiums for T20 World Cup

(i) In a recent announcement Mukesh Ambani owned Reliance Jio is to offer free Wi-fi services during the T20 World Cup across 6 stadiums in the country. 

(ii) As per the company statement, the services which are offered as JioNet, will be available for the spectators at the the cricket matches in Ferozshah Kotla in Delhi, Eden Gardens in Kolkata, Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru and cricket stadiums in Dharamshala, and Mohali. 

9. Jerry Pinto chosen for 2016 Windham-Campbell Prize

(i) In a recent development, columnist and author Jerry Pinto was chosen for the 2016 Windham-Campbell Prize. 

(ii) Pinto is among the nine recipients of the annual prize, which is awarded to English-language writers "for their literary achievements or their potential".

(iii) Pinto won the award for his first novel 'Em and The Big Hoom' in the fiction category. The book was published in 2012.The Donald Windham Sandy M. Campbell Literature Prize is an American literary award that was established at Yale University in 2011 and recognises works of fiction, non-fiction and drama.

(iv) Other recipients of the award this year are: Branden Jacobs-Jenkins (US), Hannah Moscovitch (Canada), and Abbie Spallen (Ireland, all drama); Tessa Hadley (UK) and C E Morgan (US, all fiction), and in non-fiction, Hilton Als (US), Stanley Crouch (US), and Helen Garner (Australia).

10. 2015 Bihari Puraskar conferred on Bhagwati Lal Vyas 

(i) In a recent development, eminent poet Dr Bhagwati Lal Vyas was chosen for the 2015 Bihari Puraskar. The award is being conferred on him for his anthology of Rajasthani poems 'Katha Sun Aawe Hai Sabad'.

(ii) In his poetry, Vyas talks about the disagreeable changes in relations, social disparity and loss of human values. However, positivity and his faith in human life are also dealt with in some of his works.

(iii) Shatabdi Niruttar, Footpath Par Chiriya Nachti Hai and Suraj Leelti Ghatiyan, etc. are examples of his other works.

(iv) The Bihari Puraskar was instituted by KK Birla Foundation in 1991 and is named after the famous Hindi poet Bihari Lal Chaube.

11. India beats Bangladesh, clinches 6th Asia Cup T20 trophy

(i) In a recently concluded Asia Cup T20, India bagged the T20 Asia Cup trophy for a record sixth time defeating Bangladesh. Due to unexpected rainfall and thunderstorm, the match was reduced to 15-over-per side after a two-hour delay.

(ii) Indian team scored 122 runs for 2 wickets in 13.5 overs defeating Bangladesh which chose to bat first, and scored 120 for five in 15 overs. 

(iii)The impressive performance by Shikhar Dhawan who scored 60 and Virat Kohli's 41 not out, set the tone for India's victory. 

(iv) After the fall of Dhawan, skipper Dhoni sealed the match in his own style scoring a 20 in 6 balls, clinching India's 6th T20 Asia cup trophy.

12. Indian bags two gold at World Table Tennis Team championship

(i) In a first, the Indian men's and women's table tennis teams clinched gold medals at the World Table Tennis Team championship in Kuala Lumpur. 

(ii) The indian women's team beat Luxembourg 3-1 in the event final of the Second Division, the Men overcame Brazil 3-2. This happened to be also the first time that the women's team kept a clean slate - eight wins - in the first and the second stages.

(iii) With this india is confirmed its entry in the Champions Division last night after reaching the finals. The Champions Division event will be played in 2018.

Daily Current Affairs - 8th and 9th March 2016, Tuesday and Wednesday 

1. Russia tops ranking of countries in terms of highest percentage of women in senior business roles

(i) According to, "Women in Business" survey by the U.S. based audit and tax firm Grant Thornton, Russia once again topped the international ranking of countries with the highest percentage of women in senior business roles.

(ii) With 45 per cent of senior management positions held by women, Russia topped the survey, closely followed by Philippines and Lithuania. The report, which was released earlier this March attributed this factor to the legacy of communism in Russia.

(iii) It added, globally, only a quarter of senior management positions are held by women, up from 22 percent a year before.

(iv) Japan remained at the bottom of the list with just 7 percent of senior leadership roles held by women. Germany and India ranked slightly better, with 15 percent and 16 percent of women in senior management, respectively.

2. Ministry of women and child development launches Mahila e-Haat for women entrepreneurs

(i) The Ministry of women and child development (WCD) with a view to strengthen Indian women entrepreneurs launched Mahila e-Haat, an online marketing platform recently.

(ii) The portal was launched ahead of the International Women's Day on March 8th, with an investment of under Rs.10 lakh from the Rashtriya Mahila Kosh, an autonomous body under the WCD ministry for the socio-economic empowerment of women.

(iii) The portal allows sellers to register their products on the platform without any listing fee and there is to be no fee till December 2016 however after which the Ministry may charge a one-time nominal fee.

(iv) As per the Ministry, "On the day of the launch, about 125,000 beneficiaries under 10,000 self-help groups registered themselves on the portal."

3. Maharashtra and Telangana ink historic water sharing pact on Godavari water project

(i) Chief Ministers of Telangana and Maharashtra K. Chandrasekhar Rao and Devendra Fadnavis, recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) at Mumbai to set up an an inter-state water board on Godavari projects.

(ii) This MoU put an end to decades of discord between the two states over water-sharing of the Godavari water and its tributaries. As per reports the two states will jointly work out mutually-agreeable specifications on the construction of Medigadda barrage, 20 km downstream of Kaleshwaram in Warangal District.

(iii) The barrage will allow irrigation of 16.4 lakh acres in Telangana and over 50,000 acres in some tribal areas of Maharashtra with the help of four small lift irrigation schemes.

4. Ikea to invest Rs 2,000 crore in Haryana 

(i) Ikea, which is the world's largest furniture retailer recently announced its plans to invest about Rs.2,000 crore in Haryana to establish its retail presence.

(ii) Ikea, which is a swedish retail company is expected to employ about 1,000 people directly through these retail outlets in Haryana.

(iii) This announcement followed after the company signed an agreement to this effect with the state government of Haryana on the second day of the Happening Haryana Global Investors Summit.

5. ICICI rolls out iWork@home initiative for women employees

(i) In a recent announcement, ICICI bank Ltd. announced its latest initiative which would allow its 21,000 women workforce to work from home for up to a year and even take their children and care-giver on business trips.

(ii) This move by the bank was announced on March 8th, international women's day, with the view to retain its talent.

(iii) In a survey conducted by the bank two years ago, it was revealed that those women employees who quit job primarily did so because of child care responsibilities, and long commutes.

(iv) Taking a note of this problem, ICICI rolled out of its iWork@home initiative on a pilot basis early this year, which enabled employees to work from home for up to a year initially and it can be extended further.

(v) ICICI bank which is headed by Chanda Kochhar has about 70,000 employees, 30% of whom are women.

6. DIPP approves 12 industrial licences of Anil Ambani led Reliance Defence

(i) In a recent development, the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) gave approval for 12 industrial licences to Anil Ambani led Reliance Defence.

(ii) Reliance Defence is involved in manufacturing of a wide range of defence equipment and this licence approval for strategic business units (SBUs) of Reliance Defence is aimed at addressing defence programmes in India and overseas.

(iii) In a statement, one of the senior officials of the company informed, "The foray of Reliance into these areas will give added traction to the Indian government's Make in India and Skill India initiatives."

(iv) With this, the Reliance Defence is expected to meet the defence equipment needs of Indian Navy, Army and the Air Force, and it also plans to target the global market of $7 billion to manufacture night vision devices (NVDs) and surveillance ones.

7. March 8th observed as International Women's Day

(i) Every year March 8th is observed as the International Women's Day. This year's theme for international women's day is "Planet 50-50 by 2030".

(ii) The United Nation (UN) first began celebrating the day in 1975, and each year it has concentrated on improving women's status around the globe.

(iii) The current goals are well within the framework of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and aims for empowerment of women and girls as core means of tackling underperformance, poverty and global over-population.

8. Russian Tennis Player Maria Sharapova fails drug test

(i) In a recent development, Russian tennis player Maria Sharapova, five time grand slam winner accepted complete responsibility for her failed drug test ahead of the Australian Open.

(ii) Sharapova in a press conference said that she had started taking Meldonium, a drug that is prescribed for angina and heart failure but can improve endurance and aerobic capacity in athletes, in 2006.

(iii) Post this revelation, Sharapova has been sharply criticised, the World Anti-Doping Agency's first president **** Pound hit out at her post the announcement labelling it "reckless beyond description".

(iv) Maledonium, which Sharapova took for health reasons since 2006 was banned on January 1, 2016 As per the International Tennis Federation (ITF), Sharapova will be provisionally suspended from 12 March. In addition, she faces up to a four-year ban.
