1. Government of Ontario, Canada invests Rs 300 cr. in India's clean tech sector 

(i) Government of Ontario, Canada recently committed investments worth Rs 300 crore in India's clean tech sector with the objective to enhance renewable and other innovative clean technologies. 

(ii) In the recent visit to India, Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne,signed a number of MoU with Indian government, 13 in the clean tech sector. The estimated value of these agreement in the clean tech sector is CAD 59.4 million (about Rs 300 crore). 

(iii) In a statement the Ontario government said, "India's energy sector has a huge potential for renewable and other innovative clean technologies to address the energy supply gap, which is where the partnerships assume a strategic importance for the country."

 (iv) To this effect, Ontario-based Advanced Energy Centre signed agreements with Tech Mahindra, Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board Limited (HPSEBL) and India Smart Grid Forum.

2. World Bank commits $150 million to combat Zika 

(i) Recently, the World Bank announced that it will provide $150 million to help countries in Latin America and the Caribbean to combat the rapidly-spreading Zika virus. 

(ii) The funding, which will be provided immediately, is a result of extensive consultations with governments in the region. As per the World Bank's estimates the short-term economic impact of the virus on the region is likely to be around $3.5 billion.

(iii) Countries like Mexico, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Brazil, Argentina, Belize and Jamaica may suffer significant economic impact.

3.US imposes sanctions on North Korea 

(i) The US President Barack Obama recently signed a law imposing sanctions on North Korea over the nation's nuclear programme and for supposed cyber-hacking incidents. 

(ii) North Korea recently launched a long-range rocket, which is considered to be a test of banned missile technology and also carried out its fourth underground nuclear test. 

(iii) The sanctions aim to stop North Korea from getting funds to develop miniaturised nuclear warheads. As China and the US are negotiating over a UN Security Council resolution on new sanctions, China pointed that these measures could badly cripple the North Korean economy.  

4. Tendulkar's autobiography enters Limca book of Records

(i) Sachin Tendulkar's autobiography Playing It My Way entered the Limca Book of Records for being the best-selling adult hardback across both fiction and non-fiction categories.

(ii) It also boasts of a record in retail value terms having registered Rs.13.51 crore with its cover price being Rs.899.Published by Hachette India on November 6, 2014, the book has broken all the records for an adult hardback with 1,50,289 copies confirmed on order subscriptions. 

(iii) On day one of the book's order, it already pulled ahead of both the pre-order and lifetime sales of the world's top adult hardbacks like Dan Brown's Inferno, Walter Issacson's Steve Jobs and JK Rowling's Casual Vacancy.

5. BHEL commissions 270 MW unit GVK power plant in Punjab 

(i) The government-owned power plant equipment manufacturer Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (BHEL) recently commissioned a 270 MW generation unit at the Goindwal Sahib Thermal Power Project of private producer GVK Power & Infra in Punjab.

(ii) The second unit of the same project is also likely to be commissioned soon. BHEL had previously commissioned four hydro sets of 82.5 MW each at the Alaknanda Hydro Power Project in Uttarakhand for the same developer. 

(iii) Besides coal-based thermal projects, BHEL has a strong presence in Punjab's hydro sector, with nearly 95% share in the hydro-electricity generating capacity of the Punjab State Power Corporation Ltd. (PSPCL).

6. Maharashtra devises policy for easy transport of harvested organs

 (i)The Maharashtra government recently decided to formulate a comprehensive policy on 'Green Corridor' to enable smooth passage of harvested organs within a specified time. 

(ii) The policy aims to tackle the hassles faced by the police over jurisdiction issues, obtaining requisite No Objection Certificates (NoCs), and creating a green corridor for the smooth passage of ambulances carrying harvested organs.

7. MM Mammen elected as Chairman of ATMA

(i) Recently, K M Mammen was unanimously elected as the Chairman of the Automotive Tyre Manufacturers' Association (ATMA), which is among the most active national industry bodies for the automotive tyre sector. He will replace Raghupati Singhania.

(ii) Satish Sharma, President (Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa) of Apollo Tyres Ltd., has been appointed as the Vice-President of the body. 

Note: Eleven tyre companies comprising Indian and international tyre majors and representing over 90% of production of tyres in India are members of ATMA. These are: Apollo Tyres, Birla Tyres, Bridgestone India, Ceat, Continental India, Goodyear India, JK Tyre & Industries, Michelin, MRF, TVS Tyres and Yokohama.

8. Ustad Abdul Rashid Khan, noted vocalist passes away 

(i) Recently, eminent hindustani classical vocalist Ustad Abdul Rashid Khan passed away at 107 in Kolkata, suffering from old-age related ailments.

(ii) Khan was a receipt of Padma Bhushan in 2013 and Sangeet Natak Akademi award. Additionally, he was a resident guru at the ITC Sangeet Research Academy in the Kolkata for the past 20 years. 

(iii) Reacting to this new, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, "Saddened at the passing away of veteran vocalist Padma Bhushan Abdul Rashid Khan. India has lost a great gem in the world of music."

1. World Bank extends support to Rajasthan govt.

(i) The World Bank recently decided to extend support to the Rajasthan government on energy reforms.

(ii) This decision was taken following a meeting between World Bank's country director in India, Onno Ruhl and Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje.

(iii) Ruhl conveyed that a detailed report has been prepared focusing on conventional and non-conventional sources of energy.

(iv)The CM also sought WB's aid for projects on rural development and new technologies in agriculture, skill development and tourism.

2. Vietnam approaches UN against China

(i) Recently, Vietnam approached the United Nations to file a formal complaint against China's placement of surface-to-air missile battery on a disputed island in the South China Sea.

(ii) Vietnam's Foreign Ministry said in a statement, "These are serious infringements of Vietnam's sovereignty over the Paracels, threatening peace and stability in the region as well as security, safety and freedom of navigation and flight."

(iii) Vietnam had issued diplomatic notes to China's embassy in Hanoi and UN Secretary-General Ban-Ki-moon to condemn China's activities.

(iv) So far, China has laid claim over nearly all the islands in the South China Sea, including small islands such as Paracels.

3. Christine Lagarde to serve second term as IMF chief

(i) Christine Lagarde, 60, was named the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a second term, which begins on July 5, 2016. In a statement, IMF said that she was the sole candidate nominated for the post.

(ii) Lagarde, the former French finance minister, took over as the MD of the IMF after the resignation of her predecessor Dominique Strauss-Kahn, who was involved in a sex scandal.

4. South Korea to build $50m IT park in Pakistan

(i)In order to improve its ties with Pakistan, South Korea has decided to build a $50-million IT park in Islamabad, the nation's capital.

(ii) South Korean Ambassador Song Jong-Hwan said that the Exim Bank of Korea will provide $50 million for the establishment of the park and South Korean teams will conduct a feasibility study with assistance from the Ministry of IT and the Pakistan Software Exports Board (PSEB).

(iii)Measuring about one million sq. ft., the IT park will attract international companies to develop software and hardware solutions and enhance the country's IT exports.

5. BRICS Friendship Cities conclave to be hosted in Mumbai

(i) Recently, it was announced that Mumbai will host the BRICS Friendship Cities Conclave from April 14-16 this year.

(ii) Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the conclave of BRICS nations (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa), which will be an opportunity for the city to be known as an upcoming international finance centre.

(iii)The conclave will be conducted jointly by Mumbai First - a think tank for Mumbai's development, the state government and the Ministry of External Affairs. Further, the professional services firm PricewaterhouseCoopers has been roped in as the knowledge partner.

6. Legendary writer Harper Lee passes away

(i) Recently, legendary American writer Harper Lee passed away at the age of 89. Her Pulitzer Prize-winning novel To Kill a Mockingbird became one of the most significant texts on racial problems in southern America.

(ii) Published in 1961 as her first book, it narrated the story of a white lawyer defending a black man falsely accused of rape in the depression-hit American south. The book delved into issues of class, race and the struggle for justice for a black man.

(iii) The book garnered Lee several awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom which was conferred on her in 2007 for her contribution to literature.

(iv) In 2010, President Barack Obama awarded her the National Medal of Arts, the highest governmental honour given for "outstanding contributions to the excellence, growth, support and availability of the arts".

7. Kalikho Pul sworn in as CM of Arunachal Pradesh

(i) Recently, President Pranab Mukerjee revoked the President's rule in Arunachal Pradesh following which Kalikho Pul was sworn in as the state's Chief Minister by Governor J P Rajkhowa.

(ii) Pul, the 8th CM of the state and a dissident Congress leader, claimed the post with the support of 18 rebel Congress MLAs, two independent candidates and 11 BJP MLAs.


8. Amit Mitra elected new chairman of empowered committee on GST

(i)West Bengal Finance Minister Amit Mitra recently was elected the new Chairman of the Empowered Committee of the State Finance Ministers, which is working with the Centre to bring out the goods and services tax (GST) regime.

(ii) Mitra was unanimously elected by other state finance ministers. The position was lying vacant since former Chairman KM Mani resigned as Finance Minister of Kerala in November 2015.


9. NZ captain McCullum scores fastest test century

(i) New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum created a new record by scoring the fastest Test century.

(ii) McCullum made 100 runs from 54 balls on day one of the second Test match against Australia. This was McCullum's 101st and final Test match before retirement.                                                            

(iii) He surpassed West Indies batsman Sir Vivian Richards and Pakistani cricketer Misbah-ul-Haq, who had both made a 100 runs in 56 balls.

Daily Current Affairs - 21st and 22nd February 2016, Sunday and Monday 

1.   Panel lead by M Venkaiah Naidu to look into Jat reservation issue 

(i) With the view to address the escalating issue of Jat Reservation, a committee under Union Minister and senior BJP leader M. Venkaiah Naidu was set up to look into the issue of Jat  reservation and submit a report to the Centre. 

(ii) The decision followed after a meeting was held between the Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh with leaders of some Jat khap panchayats.

(iii) Mr. Singh added, "While the committee will prepare a comprehensive report on Jat reservation, the Haryana government will introduce a Bill in the State Assembly to provide for reservation for Jats in the State."

2. US to carry out anti-dumping probe on tyres from India and Sri Lanka

(i) Recently, a US investigative body decided to carry out anti-dumping investigations into certain category of tyres imported from India and Sri Lanka that may damage US' domestic industry. 

(ii) The decision followed after all the six commissioners of the United States International Trade Commission (USITC) agreed that there is enough indication that the US industry is materially injured by the imports of new pneumatic off-the-road tyres, which are available in market at less-than-fair rates and subsidised by Indian and Sri Lankan governments. 

3. India set to sign major power deal with Bangladesh 

(i) As per recent reports, India is set to finalise a major power deal with Bangladesh, making it the biggest project by an indian power firm -- bigger than the plant already built in Rwanda or the one proposed in Sri Lanka. 

(ii) The state run Bharat Heavy Electrical Ltd (BHEL) will seal a contract to build a $1.6 billion power plant in Bangladesh. 

(iii) China and India, have recently been involved in commercial tussle, being the two dominant regional powers and this step will be seen as Indian victory over Beijing's encroachment onto territory in India's neighbourhood. 

4. Faustin Touadera wins Presidential elections in Central African Republic

(i) Recently, former Prime Minster Faustin Touadera was elected president of the Central African Republic (CAR) in a run-off contest. Touadera received close to 63% of the votes, defeating his opponent Anicet Dologuele who won just over 37%.

(ii) His campaign highlighted the need to restore security and throughout his campaign he presented himself as a peacemakers between the Christian-Muslim divide and improve nation's economy.

(iii) CAR , has been through a period of violent sectarian unrest following the seizure of power by Muslim Seleka rebels in 2013.

(iv) An estimated fifth of the country's population is either internally displaced or was forced to escape the country due to poverty, ethnic conflicts and lack of security.

5. EU to hold migration summit with Turkey in March 

(i) The European Union (EU) decided to hold a special summit with Turkey in March this year to deal with the migrant crisis. The summit will coordinate efforts to reduce the flow of migrants across the Aegean Sea in Greece. 

(ii) In a statement, the EU Council President Donald Tusk said, "The EU's joint action plan with Turkey remains a priority and we must do all we can to succeed." 

(iii) Presently, over 2 million refugees are in Turkey and a majority of them are from Syria. The EU has promised billions of euros, relaxation of visa restrictions and fast-track membership for Turkey in order to convince it to tighten border controls.

6. Prasar Bharati signs MoU with Brazil's Empressa de Brazil Communicacao

(i) In a recent, Prasar Bharati, India's public broadcasting agency signed a Memorandum of          Understanding (MoU) with Brazil's Empressa de Brazil Communicacao (EBC) with the view to exchange  TV and radio news, programs on football, culture, cuisine, carnivals and drama and co-produce shows between the two countries. 

(ii) The agreement to this effect was signed between Jawhar Sircar, the CEO of Prasar Bharati and EBC's vice president Mario in Brazil. India has already signed such pacts with other countries. 

(iii) In December 2015, India signed pact with Russia to jointly produce and exchange TV programs and related services and in May 2015 India also tied with up with Doordarshan and the Chinese state run China Central Television (CCTV).

7.  Japan launches ASTRO- H satellite

(i) Japan recently launched the ASTRO H satellite from the Tanegashima Space Center in order to study X-rays emanating from black holes in space. 

(ii) The satellite has been developed in collaboration with NASA and other space agencies. It will be set to orbit at an altitude of about 360 miles and observe X-rays originating from black holes and galaxy clusters.

(iii) Till date, back holes have never been directly observed, however, the announcement of the detection of gravitational waves earlier in February 2016 added to the evidence of black holes' existence. 

8. Indologist David Schulman wins Israel Prize for religious studies

(i) Renowned Indologist Professor David Dean Shulman was recently awarded the Israel Prize for Religious Studies. 

(ii) Shulman, a professor of Hebrew University in Jerusalem, is widely known for his groundbreaking research in on the religion, literature, and culture of south India. He is also recognised for his command over several Indian languages, including Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam. 

(iii) Israel Prize is the nation's highest honour and is presented annually on Independence Day to those who have shown excellence in their fields, or have contributed immensely to Israeli culture.

9. Arunachal Pradesh celebrates 30th Statehood Day on February 20th 

(i) On February 20, 2016, Arunachal Pradesh celebrated its 30th Statehood Day. Statehood was conferred on Arunachal Pradesh on this day in 1987. 

(ii) The event was declared open by the Governor JP Rajkhowa in the presence of the newly sworn-in Chief Minister Kalikho Pul. 

(iii) In his first address to the state, CM Pul stated that he would restructure all the developmental activities of the state. He assured people of a need-based and balanced development during his regime. 

(iv) With the maxim and the theme "My city, My pride! I'll Clean It", the 'Clean Arunachal Fortnight' was observed from February 1 to 13 as a curtain raiser to the celebrations.

10. Andhra Pradesh saves 421 million units of power in 2015 using LED bulbs

(i) An independent survey conducted by Andhra University and Engineering Staff College of India - has revealed that the state saved about 421 mn unit of power, in 2015 given the state government's push to use of LED bulbs in four of the 13 districts. 

(ii) As per reports, the state government distributed 57.03 lakh LED bulbs in Anantapuram, Guntur, West Godavari and Srikakulam districts, with a total 1.75 crore bulbs being distributed in all the 13 districts as against the target of 1.87 crore. The study covered 57,667 households in the four districts and revealed that 421 million unit of power was saved. 

(iii) The study will be formally released by Union Power Minister Piyush Goyal at a function in Nellore on February 27 in the presence of Union Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu and AP Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu.

(i) The private sector lender Axis Bank recently, tied up with domestic remittance company Suvidhaa in order to lend to the urban poor. This will be a boon for taxi drivers, rickshaw pullers, tailors, etc., who struggle to get loans as bank consider them to be mere workers and not entrepreneurs. 

(ii) As per the new partnership, people with no formal credit score or requisite collateral will also be granted loans.

(iii) Rajiv Anand, head of retail banking at Axis Bank said, "Suvidhaa has been our business correspondent for a long time and we have been doing payments, remittances for their customers, so credit was the only next logical step."

12. Aditya Birla nuvo ltd. in joint venture with idea cellular to set up a payments bank

(i) Aditya Birla Nuvo Ltd announced a joint venture with Idea Cellular to set up a payments bank. 

(ii) In August 2015, RBI had given in-principle approval to the company to set up a payments bank. For the same, Aditya Birla Nuvo Ltd. has incorporated a new subsidiary under the name Aditya Birla Idea Payments Bank Ltd. 

(iii) As per a company statement, "ABNL will hold 51 per cent shares and the rest 49 per cent by Idea Cellular."

13. Bollywood lyricist Sameer Anjan enters Guinness book of records

(i) Recently, Bollywood lyricist Sameer Anjan was recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records for penning the highest number of Bollywood song lyrics ever. 

(ii) Till December 2015, he had written 3524 songs for 650 films in a career spanning 33 years. 

(iii) Anjan, whose real name is Shitala Pandey, began his career in 1983. His first song appeared in the movie 'Bekhabar.' 

14. World Social Justice Day observed on February 20

(i) Every year February 20th is observed as the World Social Justice Day. 

(ii) The theme for this year is, A Just Transition - environmentally sustainable economies and societies. 

(iii) The United Nation General Assembly proclaimed 20 February as World Day of Social Justice in 2007, and urged the member nations to promote national activities in accordance with the objectives and goals of the World Summit for Social Development and the twenty-fourth session of the General Assembly.

1. India ranks 54th in terms of domestic policies supporting innovation

(i) As per a recent report developed by a global technology think tank, Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF), India ranks 54th in terms of its domestic policies supporting worldwide innovation.

(ii) The report undertook a study of 56 countries, comprising close to 90 per cent of the world's economy. It analysed the extent to which on a per capita basis, their respective economic and trade policies contribute to and detract from innovation globally.

(iii) The report urged policy makers and economist to consider innovation as vital as trade for enhancing growth and called for clearly disguising between policies which promote world's innovation ecosystem and those which do not.

2. Mercer's Finding - Hyderabad best city in Inida in terms of quality of living 

(i) As per the recently released Mercer's Quality of Living rankings 2016, Hyderabad for the second time in a row remains the best city in India in terms of quality of living.

(ii) Internationally Vienna has topped, as the city with the best quality of living for the third consecutive time.

(iii) Though Hyderabad has made it to the list as best city for the second time, it has slipped one rank from last year's 139 of the overall ranking.

(iv) This slip is largely attributed to the harsh weather conditions and increased power disruptions.

(v) Vienna tops the list, other countries in the top ranks include Zurich (2), Auckland (3), and Munich (4).Vancouver (5) is North America's highest ranking city, and Singapore is the highest ranking Asian city, holding 26th place.

3. Karnataka to set up agency like Singapore's IDA to attract investment

(i) Recently, Karnataka state government announced its plans to set up a holding company along the lines of Singapore's Infocomm Development Authority (IDA), with participation of corporate leaders, to attract investment.

(ii) While speaking on this subject Karnataka Industries Minister, R V Deshpande said, "We not only need help in getting investments, but also in promoting government-industry relations."

(iii) The proposed body would expand the role of Karnataka Udyog Mitra which is the existing state-run agency to promote investment.

4. ICICI Bank takes over Rs 1800 cr. land from Jaypee group

(i) Recently, ICICI Bank took over about 275 acres land, worth an estimated Rs1,500 -1,800 crore in Noida and Greater Noida from Jaiprakash Associated Ltd (JAL), which is a flagship company of the Jaypee Group.

(ii) The transaction is expected to reduce JAL's debt servicing obligation to a more manageable level, and also reduce bank's exposure to the company as well.

(iii) As per reports, ICICI Bank's total exposure to JAL is Rs 6,600 crore as of March 2015 and the transaction was necessitated since the company could not service its debt on quarterly basis.    

5. Shinjini Kumar to join as CEO of Paytm's payment bank

(i) In a recent development, Shinjini Kumar, a former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) executive and current Director at research and consultancy firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) has been appointed as the chief executive officer at Paytm's payments bank. She is expected to join in March and will look into overall business from revenue to regulatory aspects.

(ii) Her broad experience is expected to benefit the company and also add value to the payment banks which are fairly new and niche concepts in India.

(iii) Paytm is a mobile wallet and E-commerce company which received in-principle approval from RBI to set up Payments bank in 2015. The company is expected to launch its bank in the second half of 2016.

6. Empowered group of state transport ministers formed to advice on road policy

(i) While addressing the 16th meeting of the National Road Safety Council 37th meeting of the Transport Development Council in New Delhi, the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways and Shipping Nitin Gadkari announced formation of an Empowered Group of State Transport Ministers to advice the government on policy issues.

(ii) This Group will be headed by Yunus Khan, the PWD and Transport Minister of Rajasthan.

(iii) This idea of empowered group of ministers was proposed to help develop transport policies in India in an integrated and also to increase the revenues of states.

7. Kumaravel Prem Kumar bags a silver in long jump

(i) Recently, Indian long jumper Kumaravel Prem Kumar bagged a silver in long jump at the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships held in Doha.

(ii) Kumar, performed 7.92m in his final attempt to bag the silver, missing the gold to China's Zhang Yaoguang who performed his best at 7.99m.

(iii) The bronze was bagged by Hong kong's Ming Tai Chan.

8. Indian women cricket team defeats Sri Lanka in first T-20 

(i) The Indian women cricket team recently defeated Sri Lanka by 34 runs to claim the first T-20 International Cricket match in Ranchi. 

(ii) With this victory the Indian women team took a lead (1-0) at the T- 20 in the three matchT20 series.

(iii) India chose to bat and made 130 for six wickets and managed to contain the Sri Lankan team at 96 for 7 in 20 overs.

1. Economically poor

2. The orphans and widows

3. The specially challenged or Divyanga

4. Children of parents lost their lives for our country

The maximum percent of reservation should not exceed 20%.

1. Pakistan's parliament becomes first in the World to run entirely on solar power

(i) In a recent development, Pakistan's parliament became the first in the world to run entirely on Solar power.

(ii) Pakistan's solar power venture is supported by its close ally China with a hefty funding of $55 million.

(iii) Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in a ceremony switched on solar-powered building of the parliament in capital, Islamabad. In a speech that followed the ceremony, PM Shariff said, "This the first time since independence (1947) that parliament has become self-sufficient in electricity through solar power. Other institutions in private and public sector need to follow it...This is another example of Pak-China friendship."

(iv) As per reports the solar panels can generate 80MW power however 62 MW will be sufficient for parliament while the rest 18 MW will be given to national grid.

2. Mortaza  to be UNDP's national goodwill ambassador for youth 

(i) In a recent development, Bangladesh's cricketer Mashrafe Mortaza was appointed as the United Nations Development Programme's (UNDP) "national goodwill ambassador for youth".

(ii) The UN agency is expected to hold an official signing ceremony and make formal announcement to that effect on February 25.

(iii) Mortaza, is currently the captain of Bangladesh's One-Day International and Twenty-20 international teams.

3. Standard Chartered posts first loss in global operations in 26 years

(i) The British lender Standard Chartered recorded its first loss in global operation in 26 years.The reported loss is worth $ 1.3 billion or Rs. 9,781 crore due to its loans to India.

(ii) As per reports, Standard Chartered has its loans predominantly in Asia, reported a pre-tax loss of $1.5 billion (Rs 10,288 crore) for 2015, down from a profit of $4.2 billion (Rs 28,800 crore) last year.

(iii) The bank primarily lends large corporate groups with commodities (like Essar) reported a $981-million (Rs 6,728-crore) loss from its operations in India, down from a profit of $561 million in 2014.

(iv) This is the biggest ever loss posted by a bank in India.


4. Yes Bank receives the inaugural Green Bond Award in UK

(i) In a recent development, Indian private lender Yes Bank received the inaugural Green Bond Award in UK.

(ii) The inaugural Green Bond Pioneer Award was organised by Climate Bonds Initiative in early February 2016 with the view to recognise the, 'Pioneers in Emerging Markets-India.'

(iii) Yes Bank received the award for its pioneering efforts in the Green Bonds market including the highly successful issuance of India's first ever Green Infrastructure Bonds.

(iv) The Climate Bond initiative is an international investor focused not for profit initiative which is involved in mobilising the USD 100-trillion bond market for climate change solutions.


5. GVK Biosciences bags Global CSR excellence & Leadership Award

(i) In a recent development, GVK Biosciences bagged the Global CSR excellence & Leadership Award in the category of Best Environment Friendly Project for its, 'Go Green, Grow Green' plantation drive.

(ii) The Global CSR Awards are constituted by the World CSR congress annually and are presented to companies on the World CSR Day to recognise those companies which believe in the value of sustainable corporate social responsibility.

(iii) The award was conferred on GVK Bio in recognition of its mega plantation drive conducted injury 2015.

6. First Knowledge Economy Zone is to come up in Amravati, Andhra Pradesh

(i) As per recent development, the Andhra Pradesh government and the Confederation of India Industry (CII) announced they are working jointly to establish the first Knowledge Economy Zone (KEZ) with the view to ensure rapid economic growth in the state.

(ii) The KEZ is to come up in the new capital city of the state, Amravati. In a statement the Chief Minister of the state, Chandrababu Naidu informed, "The government proposes to take the help of World Economic Forum (WEF) and Harvard University in grounding the KEZ."

(iii) The KEZ is expected to begin its operation by June 2016.

7. Edu-Grid project announced in Andhra Pradesh

(i) Recently, during the two day collectors conference in Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh, the state officials announced the implementation of Edu-Grid project of the Department of Information Technology and Communication (IT&C) department which would unify all the state universities.

(ii) This project would enable all the students to access data pertaining to their attendance, grades and assignments among others through the University website.

8. K N Vyas appointed new BARC chief

(i) K N Vyas a distinguished scientist was recently appointed as the Director of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), India's multi-disciplinary nuclear research centre.

(ii) Vyas appointment has been approved for a period of three years and he succeeds Shekar Basu. Vyas, has made notable contributions in the areas of design and development of a unique fuel and is a recipient of the Science and Technical Excellence awards.

9. Ather Energy launches India's first electric scooter S340

(i) Recently Ather Energy a Bengaluru based hardware start up launched India's first electric scooter S340.

(ii) The energy company is backed by Flipkart founders and Tiger Global in its efforts. The scooters will be available in the market by the end of 2016 and orders for the product can be placed online.

(iii) The scooter covers the distance of 60 kilometres in one single charge and the company claims that its Lithium Ion battery pack is IP67 rated and offers an un-compromised ride for 50,000 km.

10. Australia replaces India as world No. 1 in ICC Test rankings

(i) Recently, Australia replaced India in the World's test ranking after a 2-0 victory in a test series over New Zealand. Captain Steven Smith and Joe Burns hit fifties on the final day as Australia achieved the target of 201set by New Zealand, losing just 3 wickets in their second innings.

(ii) Joe Burns was selected as man of the match for his 170 and 65 runs from both innings.s.
