External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj formally unveiled the BRICS Logo for the duration of India's BRICS Chairmanship. She also launched India's BRICS website on the occasion. She announced that the 8th BRICS Summit would be organized in Goa on 15-16 October this year. Over fifty meetings and events, at the Ministerial, Senior Officials, Working Groups, Technical, and Track-II levels, are proposed to be organized during India's BRICS Chairmanship through the year.

Goa will be the first state to have a 'coastal reserve for protection of turtles', chief minister Laxmikant Parsekar said on Wednesday in Galjibagh in Canacona taluka. This will be first coastal reserve for turtles in the country, he said. Galgibaga is one of the famous turtle nesting sites in Goa. Over the years due to developmental activities, turtle habitat has been disturbed both in north Goa and south Goa.

1. India's Agasthyamala Biosphere Reserve in UNESCO's World Network of Biosphere Reserves

  1. Recently, India's Agasthyamala Biosphere Reserve (ABR) was added in the UNESCO's World Network of Biosphere Reserves (BR).
  2. The Agasthyamala Biosphere Reserve was included on March 19 at the International Coordinating Council of the Man and the Biosphere programme of UNESCO that concluded in Peru.
  3. The ABR includes regions of Shendurney and Peppara wildlife sanctuaries and parts of the Neyyar sanctuary in Kerala and the Kalakad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve of Tamil Nadu.
  4. India, for several years had been campaigning for the inclusion of the ABR in the network of Biosphere Reserves.

2. Sub-committee of high level under Ashok Lahiri appointed to decide excise duty on jewellers

  1. In a recent development, the Union Ministry of Finance constituted a sub-committee under the Chairmanship of Ashok Lahiri with the view to look into procedures that will govern the levy of excise duty on jewellers announced in this year's budget.
  2. Ashok Lahiri is the former chief economic advisor who will chair the sub-committee which will also include representatives of gold traders, one legal expert, officials from the Central Board of Excise and Customs and an official from the commerce ministry.
  3. This move to appoint a sub-committee follows after jewellers went on 19 day strike post union budget announcement that excise duty will be imposed at the rate of 1% (without input tax credit) and 12.5% (with input tax credit) on all articles of jewellery.
  4. The sub-committee is expected to submit its report within 60 days and will examine issues relating to compliance procedures for the excise duty, including maintenance of records and forms to be filled.

3. Justice HL Dattu appointed as member of International coordinating Committee Bureau of NHRC

  1. In a recent development, the chairperson of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Justice H L Dattu emerged as the unanimous choice for the appointment as the member of International Coordinating Committee of NHRI (ICC) Bureau in Geneva.
  2. In a statement NHRC confirmed, "No other NHRI from the Asia-Pacific region nominated a candidate against him to fill the position of a Member vacated by the representative of NHRI of South Korea. NHRC, India, will now be representing Asia-Pacific Region along with Mongolia, Qatar and Australia."
  3. Justice Dattu has vast experience in Legal profession, which will allow him to meaningfully contribute to the approach of the ICC on human rights issues being faced by the international community.ICC Bureau serves as the management committee of International Coordinating Committee (ICC) of National Human Rights Institutions and it is entrusted with the responsibility of implementing all the decisions of the ICC General Meetings and directs the operations of the ICC between these meetings.

4. Advocate General of Maharashtra Shreehari Aney quits

  1. In a recent development Advocate General Shreehari Aney of Maharashtra submitted his resignation to the Governor of Maharashtra, C Vidyasagar Rao, two days following he demanded a separate Marathwada state from Maharashtra which evoked sharp reactions from the opposition parties as well as ruling party in Maharashtra.
  2. In a response on social networking website Facebook Mr Aney said, "In the present disruption of the legislature, I see a clear pattern. Since I shall not stop from voicing my demand for Vidarbha's statehood, the legislators will not stop from using it as a ready excuse to stall the working of the house; one of us has to step back."
  3. In his defence he insisted that the role of Advocate General is to protect the interest of the public. He further added, "And that the legislature must function if the interest of the people is to be protected, my final act as Advocate General which would be most in the interest of the people of the state was to resign from the post."

5. Ninth International Abilympics begins in France

  1. Recently, the 9th International Abilympics began at Bordeaux in France.
  2. The Abilympics term was coined from 'Olympics of abilities' and is held for persons with disabilities. From India, a 19 member team has left to compete at the games.
  3. Abilympics is a global work skills competition and aims to promote social awareness in the field of skill development and employment both locally and internationally with the view to foster friendship among all the competing nation.

6. March 23 observed as Martyrdom Day

  1. Every year March 23 is observed as the Martyrdom Day in India to mark the death anniversary of these three notable Indian freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev .
  2. It was on March 23, 1931, great Indian freedom fighters - Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev were martyred in Lahore Jail and cremated in Ferozpur district of Punjab.
  3. Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev on this day and in a tweet, said, he salutes their indomitable valour and patriotism that inspires generations. He said, these 3 brave men sacrificed their lives so that generations after them can breathe the air of freedom.
  4. Union Petroleum Ministry set up Amar Jyoti at Hussainiwala in Ferozpur district of Punjab to mark this day.

7. Lewis Hamilton wins 50th career pole position at Australian Grand Prix

  1. Recently, World Champion, Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton bagged his 50th career pole position at the Australian Grand Prix held in Melbourne.
  2. Hamilton, picked up where he left with the last championship season of 10 wins and 11 poles, out-performing not just his rival but also his team-mate Nico Rosberg at the season's opening race.
  3. The three time champion led almost throughout, as he consistently improved his lap time over the three qualifying stages to finish the race at the best time of one minute 23.837 seconds.

1. March 25th observed as International Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade

(i) Every year March 25, is observed as the International Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade, this day is marked to remember those people who had suffered and died due to brutal slavery system. This day aims to raise awareness about the dangers of racism and prejudice in present times as well.

(ii) The theme for 2016 is," Remember Slavery: Celebrating the Heritage and Culture of the African Diaspora and its Roots." This theme is aimed at highlighting the rich African culture and traditions that have impacted life in countries that were involved in slave trade and were the African Diaspora continues to make major contribution in all aspects of life.

(iii) It also highlights the cultural linkages that exist among people of African descent throughout the world.

2. India signs MoU with France to construct six nuclear reactors at Jaitapur

(i) In a recent development India signed a Memorandum of Understanding(MoU) for the construction of six nuclear reactors at Jaitapur in Maharashtra.

(ii) The pact was signed following the end of high level delegation of Electricite de France (EDF - French public utility) to Mumbai for holding discussions with National Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) on the construction of the nuclear plants.

(iii) The EDF meet was an outcome of the visit of French President Francois Hollande in India in January 2016 during which France and India drew up a cooperation roadmap for concluding techno-commercial negotiations for the Jaitapur project by the end of 2016.

3. Longitudinal Ageing study in India launched by Ministry of Health & Family

(i) Recently, Ministry of Health & Family launched the Longitudinal Ageing study in India (LASI).The project was launched by B P Sharma, Secretary of Health and Family Welfare.

(ii) As per reports, it will be the largest survey of the elderly - 60,000 elderly over 25 years plan.The Survey is expected to provide scientifically validated data on various issues faced by them.

(iii) In the next few years in India, increasing percentage of the Indian population will be elderly and these survey findings will prove extremely important to develop policy for the same. Speaking of the survey B P Sharma, Secretary Health said, "The study will provide valuable data on their health needs and issues faced by them given the changing social structures, and help us to draw policy tools to address their issues."

4. Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal in Fortune's, World's 50 greatest leaders 

(i) Delhi's Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal recently became the only Indian political leader to have been named among the world's 50 greatest leaders list which was released by Fortune magazine.

(ii) Arvind Kejriwal, who is the chief of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was ranked 42nd on the list.

(iii) The list was topped byAmazon CEO Jeff Bezos, followed by the German Chancellor Angela Merkel in second place and Myanmar's pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi was placed third.

(iv) Fortune' third annual 'World's 50 Greatest Leaders' list features the names of men and women around the world who are "transforming the world and inspiring others to do the same." The list includes those individuals who are doing distinguishing work in the fields of business, government, philanthropy and the arts.

5. Mehbooba Mufti Sayeed set to become J&K's first woman CM

(i) As per recent development, Mehbooba Mufti Sayeed, is set to become first woman Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir.

(ii) Mufti, belongs to People's Democratic Party (PDP) and this decision came after a meeting of PDP legislators chaired by Mehbooba Mufti in Srinagar in March 2016.

(iii) Since the death of former Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed the state had been under Governor's rule. In a statement, PDP leader Naeem Akhtar said that the rest will follow only after consultation with alliance partner Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

6. Shane Watson retires from International cricket

(i) In a recent announcement, Australian cricketer Shane Watson announced his retirement from international cricket. In 2015, Watson had announced his retirement from Test cricket at the end of the Ashes tour of England.

(ii) With the end of the ongoing World Twenty20, Watson will officially leave international cricket. Watson, is one of the only seven men in history to have achieved the double of 10000 runs and 250 wickets in international cricket across all three formats.

(iii) Others being, Steve Waugh, Carl Hooper, Sanath Jayasuirya, Jacques Kallis, Shahid Afridi and Chris Gayle. He had also been the captain of Australia in all three formats, including the T20.

7. Johan Cruyff, famous soccer player passes away

(i) Famous soccer player from The Netherlands Johan Cruyff passed away recently due to cancer at 68, in Barcelona, Spain.

(ii) Johan Cruyff was avidly remembered for his effort to lead Holland to the finals of the 1974 World Cup and also for being the European footballer of the year on three occasions.

(iii) As per reports, Cruyff won three consecutive European Cups with Ajax from 1971 and coached Barcelona to their first European Cup triumph in 1992 among other achievements.

(iv) Expressing grief on his loss, the Dutch FA said, "Words can hardly be found for this huge loss" It added, Cruyff was the "greatest Dutch footballer of all time and one of the world's best ever" and wished everyone "a lot of strength in this difficult time".

1. WB approves $100 million loan for civilian and refugee job creation in Jordan 

(i) Recently, the World Bank extended a $100 million loan to Jordan in order to help create 100,000 jobs for Syrian refugees and civilian population of Jordan.

(ii) Shortly before, Lebanon was also awarded $100 million to ensure universal school enrolment for the Lebanese children and Syrian refugees. World Bank President said the money for Jordan and Lebanon - both middle income countries - is from a special fund normally reserved for the poorest countries.

(iii) Cheap loan extended by Bank and other financial institutions are new tools used by the international community for creating jobs and educational opportunities so as to reduce the flow of refugees in Europe and neighbouring countries. 

2. World Bank approves $250 million loan to Rajasthan

(i) Recently, the World Bank Board approved a $250 million development policy loan (DPL) for Rajasthan's new 24x7 Power for All program. The loan has been extended to help the state upgrade performance of its electricity distribution sector under the scheme. 

(ii) The First Programmatic Electricity Distribution Reform Development Policy Loan for Rajasthan will be the first in a series of two operations for a comprehensive turnaround of Rajasthan's power distribution sector. 

(iii) This operation will align the Indian government's UDAY scheme (for ailing power DISCOM's) with the Rajasthan government's plans to improve the financial, operational and technical performance of its DISCOMs.

3. Mizoram signs pact with Japanese International Cooperative Agency for sustainable agriculture and irrigation development  

(i) Mizoram government and Japanese International Cooperative Agency (JICA) recently signed an agreement on Capacity Enhancement for Sustainable Agriculture and Irrigation Development. 

(ii) The agreement was signed between top officials of Agriculture, Minor Irrigation, Horticulture and Soil and Water Conservation departments in the presence of state chief secretary Lalmalsawma and from Japan's JICA team leader Satoru Fujita and four other officials both from Tokyo and Delhi. 

(iii) As per the agreement, JICA will undertake technical cooperation project in four rural development blocks in Aizawl, Kolasib, Serchhip and Champhai districts and training programmes  will be conducted in Japan for officials and farmers from Mizoram with all expenses borne by the Japanese government.

4. SBI to set up special China desk to attract Chinese investors

(i) The Shanghai branch of State Bank of India (SBI) announced that it will set up a special Chinese desk to attract prospective investors from China under the 'Make in India' campaign. 

(ii) The desk will provide advisory services and will be developed along the lines of the Japan desk that was set up in New Delhi. 

(iii) In March 2016, the India-China Business and Investment Forum was held in the Chinese city Wuxi wherein over 20 Indian firms participated to introduce latest investment opportunities to their Chinese counterparts.

5. World Theatre Day observed on March 27

(i) Every year March 27 is observed as World Theatre Day which was initiated by the International Theatre Institute (ITI) and theatre communities across the globe. 

(ii) To mark this occasion, many national and international theatre events are organised worldwide. 

(iii) The salient feature of this day is the circulation of the World Theatre Day International Message through an eminent personality who would share his/her reflections on the theme of Theatre and a Culture of Peace.

(iv) Russian Dramatist Anatoly Vasiliev is the World Theatre Day International Message Author 2016. Vasiliev is an internationally acclaimed theatre director and professor of Russian theatre.

6. Indian-origin academician Surya Deva appointed as UN Advisor on Human Rights and Business

(i) Recently, the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) appointed Indian-origin Professor Surya Deva as the Asia-Pacific representative of the UN Working Group on the issue of human rights and transnational corporations and other business enterprises. 

(ii) Deva will be one among the four-member working group. An Associate Professor at the City University of Hong Kong's School of Law, Deva's area of work and research has been business and human rights, corporate social responsibility, India-China constitutional law, and sustainable development. 

(iii) He is one of the founding Editors-in-Chief of the Business and Human Rights Journal, and is part of the Editorial Board of the Netherlands Quarterly of Human Rights. He recently wrote a paper for India's National Framework on Business and Human Rights. 

(iv) Among other achievements, in 2014, he was also elected a Member of the Executive Committee of the International Association of Constitutional Law.

1. New Afghan Parliament building attacked by militants 

(i) Recently, in a major attack that caused heavy damage, Taliban militants fired three rockets into the Afghanistan's Parliament compound in Kabul. 

(ii) The Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the attack and said it caused heavy casualties. However, lawmakers in Afghanistan asserted that no one was reported wounded. 

(iii) The members of the Wolesi Jirga, the lower house of parliament, were holding a meet when the attack took place. The country's Parliament building was developed with aid from India and was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in December 2015.

2. USAID and Asian Development Bank sign pact to develop solar park in India

(i) The US Agency for International Development (USAID) signed a pact with the Asian Development bank with the view to provide 5,681 crore (USD 848 million) to develop solar parks across India. 

(ii) This forms a part of the clean energy infrastructure in the country and the agreement to that effect was signed between Jonathan Addleton, Mission Director, USAID for India and M Teresa Kho, Country Director, India Resident Mission, Asian Development Bank (ADB). 

(iii) As per the press release of US Embassy, "Through the agreement, USAID will align the technical resources of two of its programs to support ADB's investments in the development of solar parks and renewable energy transmission infrastructure in states at the forefront of India's efforts to promote clean energy."

3. Direct shipping service launched between India-Bangladesh 

(i) The direct shipping service between India's Krishnapatnam and Bangladesh's Chittagong port was recently launched giving a fillip to Indo-Bangladesh maritime trade ties and bilateral cooperation. 

(ii) The direct services is expected to markedly reduce the transportation cost thereby improving the already promising exports of cotton, steel, tyres, minerals, and other goods to Bangladesh. It is estimated that close to 50 per cent cotton imported by Bangladesh is from India. 

(iii) This development has come as a welcome news for traders from both the sides as it will reduce the cost substantially. 

(iv) Member of Bangladesh Parliament Noor-e-Alam Chowdhury, Bangladesh's Neepa Paribahan chief executive officer Md. Sirajuddin Rahaman, Krishnapatnam port chief executive officer Anil Yendluri and chief operating officer S. Subba Rao were present at the event, which marked the berthing of the first historic vessel named MV Harbour-1 which arrived at the Krishnapatnam Port Container Terminal (KPCT) in Nellore. 

4. Two Andhra Pradesh's villages to be fully solar powered by this year 

(i) In a first, two villages in Andhra Pradesh Toorputallu and Pedhamyanavanilanka, will be electrified completely on solar power by the end of 2016. 

(ii) These two villages have been adopted by Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, under the Sansad Aadarsh Gram Yojna (SAGY) and they will be the first two villages in the country to be run 100 per cent on Solar Power. 

(iii) Sansad Aadarsh Gram Yojna (SAGY) was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the view to develop the villages in India. As per the scheme each Member of Parliament will take the responsibility of developing physical and institutional infrastructure in three villages by 2019.

5. ISRO to launch a record 22 satellites in single mission by May 2016

(i) In a recent development India's national space agency, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) announced a launch of record 22 satellites in a single mission by May 2016. 

(ii) This information was given by ISRO's Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre Director K Sivan in his media interaction recently. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)'s workhorse Polar rocket PSLV C34 carrying India's Cartosat 2C will also include 21 satellites from other countries  including US, Canada, Indonesia and Germany as co-passengers. 

(iii) The launch of these 22 satellites would be made from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota. Previously, US Space agency NASA had sent 29 satellites to the orbit in a single launch on 2013 setting a world record. ISRO has previously sent 10 satellites into orbit in a single mission in 2008.

6. Indian origin Nandita Bakshi appointed President and CEO of Bank of West

(i) Recently, 57-year-old Indian-American Nandita Bakshi was appointed as the President and CEO of Bank of West, which is a unit of the French multinational bank BNP Paribas. Bakshi will replace Michael Shepherd. 

(ii) She is expected to join as the CEO-in-training on April 1 and officially take charge on June 1 this year. Bakshi received the New England News 'Woman of the Year' award in 2002 and was previously with TD Bank as its executive vice-president and head of North American direct channels. 

(iii) She has also held several leadership positions at Washington Mutual which is now J P Morgan Chase, Fleet Boston which is now Bank of America, First Data Corp, Home Savings of America and Banc One Corp. She has a bachelor's degree in History from the University of Calcutta and a Master's in International Relations and Affairs at Jadavpur University.

(i) The 63rd National Film Awards were recently conferred, actor Amitabh Bachchan bagged the Best Actor award for his performance in the film 'Piku.' 

(ii) This is his fourth national award, the other three being for his performance in films like 'Agneepath', 'Black', and 'Paa'. 

(iii) The Best Actress award was won by Kangana Ranaut for 'Tanu Weds Manu Returns'. Sanjay Leela Bhansali bagged the Best Director honour for the historical drama 'Bajirao Mastani'. 

(iv) Telugu director SS Rajamouli's 'Baahubali' won the Best Feature Film award, while 'Dum Laga Ke Haisha' bagged the Best Hindi Film award. 'Bajrangi Bhaijaan' won the Best Popular Film award.

8. Second Annual Hockey India awards conferred

(i) The second annual Hockey India awards was held in Bengaluru recently. The award winners included late Captain Shankar Laxman, he won the coveted Major Dhyan Chand Lifetime Achievement Award. 

(ii) PR Sreejesh and Deepika won the Dhruv Batra Player of the Year Award for Men and Women respectively. 

(iii) The Hockey India Jugraj Singh Award for Upcoming Player of the Year (Men-under 21) was won by Harjeet Singh and Asunta Lakra Award for Upcoming Player of the Year (Women-under 21) was bagged by Preeti Dubey, among others. 

9. Sergey Karjakin wins FIDE chess candidates tournament in Moscow

(i) In the recently concluded FIDE World Chess Candidates Tournament Russian grandmaster Sergey Karjakin won the game. 

(ii) In the final round Karjakin defeated American grandmaster Fabiano Caruana. With this, now, Karjakin will play with incumbent world champion, Norwegian grandmaster Magnus Carlsen in a match for the world chess crown in the United States in November 2016. 

(iii) Sergey Karjakin, is a Ukraine born chess player. He is also known as a former chess prodigy and holds the record for the world's youngest Grandmaster ever as he qualified for this title at the age of 12 years.
