Fernando Alonso - The Legend

Last weekend, Fernando Alonso triumphed at his home race in Valencia, Spain. It was even more special since he charged like a bull from 11th on the grid to win. Surely, he was lucky at some stages like with Hamilton and Raikkonen's botched pitstops or Vettel's car succumbing after the re-start but as said in Formula 1, you make your own luck and he did it. Not to forget his smart moves on Webber, Schumacher and Maldonado and on the inexperienced Grosjean set him up for a phenomenal win in Spain, his 1st since the Spanish GP in 2006.

Fernando Alonso can be considered as one of the greatest drivers ever to embrace the sport of Formula 1. His name can be taken in the same breath as Senna, Prost, Schumacher, Ascari and G.Hill.

When he debuted for Minardi back in 2001, there were signs of sheer genius in him. It was more than evident in Japan that year when he beat 1 Prost, 1 Honda and 2 Arrows to a brilliant 11th in a poultry car. As he gained experience, he polished this greatness even more.

For me though, I spotted a true legend in him back in 2006 Hungary. It was a wet grand prix. Fernando started 15th after some dirty tactics on Robert Doornbos but was leading the race after half way point with some sensational overtaking moves on a track where overtaking is impossible even in dry conditions. If not for the wheelnut failure, he would have won. In my opinion that was the best drive I have ever seen in a wet grand prix.

Fast forward to 2011 and we see Fernando Alonso as the new darling of Italy and Ferrari. Ferrari F60, the 2011 challenger which was no where close to challenging the leaders was driven by the scruff of it's neck by Alonso to score 1 win and 9 podiums.

2012 and Ferrari produced an even worse car than 2011 at the start of the season and he pulled out a shock win (even by Ferrari standards) in Malaysia.

What makes Alonso a legend is his brilliant technical understanding of the car as well as the tires. He is a thinking driver, who knows when to push and when to back off and save tires. His offence and defense techniques are a class apart. He has never got involved in a wheel to wheel crash since Bahrain 2008.

Apart from the technical skills, he has great leadership skills and team building skills. He has sewn the strings at Ferrari with a friendly warmth and positiveness. You will never see Alonso bad-mouthing his team like some others would do (ask Vitaly Petrov). He is always the motivator within his team and that's why he is adored by Ferrari.

Whether he claims a 3rd title or not, Fernando Alonso will be remembered as one of the greatest drivers of all time.
