Hey everyone. This post is meant to educate people about the seletion process of IIM - A. It's a long post so please bear with me, but hopefully, this will clear some things.
Profile - General, Engineer
I got 99.98 percentile and received no call from IIM - A. I was definitely disheartened. I have average academic scores (10 CGPA in 10th, 82.2 in 12th and CGPA 7.53 in graduation) so I always knew that unless I score extremely well in CAT, there is no way I'll get a call. So I did. I worked hard and got this percentile.
After not being shortlisted, all I could think was - no matter how hard you work, the sins of your past will forever hold you down. But I could'nt keep thinking that and I needed some closure. Lucky for me, I live in Ahmedabad - so I went to IIM - A. They were kind enough to guide us to the admissions office and let us meet with the admissions head himself. There it was that I saw it.
Important - what you'll read next is hard data and completely true. I doubt such data has ever been revealed (you can correct me if I'm wrong) and I'm writing this here so that students can judge everything with more clarity.
The shortlisting is done on the basis of Composite Score (CS) which is calculated as follows:
CS = 0.3*(normalized Academic Rating Score) + 0.7*(Normalized CAT Score)
My CS was 0.742
This wasn't arbitrary. They showed me the whole calculation. It made complete sense. And there is no human intervention anywhere - it is all computerized so you can be assured that there are no biases as such.
Now, get this - the data showed that the last call for General Engineers was given at 0.744 :(
Yes, I missed by 0.002. Thing is that they've drastically reduced the number of general engineers that they're calling, in order to increase diversity, so the cutoff is higher than ever. I've now made my peace with it.
Another thing that I take away from this whole experience that the administrative staff over there is very friendly. Guys, even if you have 100 questions, they'll answer each very patiently. They told me that every year people have queries and we're more than happy to answer. But those queries are usually asked by thousands of students over call or mail and it becomes operationally very difficult to handle everything efficiently and convincingly. So please, this is my personal request, let's not play the blame game if someone's queries are not answered.

P.S. - If someone wants me to throw more light on the exact CS calculation process, let me know. It's pretty straightforward but would have taken up space, so I decided to omit it.

Normalized CAT score = your scaled score/300
Normalized AR Score = your AR Score/average of AR scores of the top 50 students in your category
Here's how you can calculate your own AR score:

As far as the average of AR scores of top 50 in your category is concerned, we all know that excellence exists. People have amazing academics. So for most categories, if not all, this value is 30. It's 30 for engineers atleast.
Then,
CS = 0.3*(normalized AR score) + 0.7*(normalized CAT score)
What all colleges can we apply after CAT results are declared?
What are the problems in admission and placements a 3+ years experience GEM (at the time of CAT 2018) might face if he manages to crack CAT 2018?
Do Old IIMs release a second list or this is final shortlisting?
Its really unfair that IIM Indore gives more than 70% weightage to class 10th and 12th. They are important parameters for sure but in those classes more than 99% students dont even know that they will pursue MBA in their future. Its much later when we finally choose MBA as a career path and they should consider that before giving Cat a weightage in their final process. I have average acads but thats simply because i have been more inclined towards my career as an entrepeneur. I know i will be rejected by IIM I and it doesnt affect me much but there are a lot of people who wants it because its a great college and they would have to miss it because they just wanted to play for some extra hours during their 10th board exams. They were unaware how much of a difference a few percents can create. Stupid innocent kids.

Sectional Percentiles : VA-85.91 , Quant - 88.75 and LR DI - 63.5.
My acads are 91-10th, 90-12th and 77% in graduation.
Please suggest me decent colleges to apply for MBA.

I have a score of 88.99% in cat 2017, which college can I try for? My past marks are just above average.
I have 90.35% in VA, 94.00 in LI/DR and 74.35 in QA. I have a 5 months work experience in Amazon and I have also had a start-up although it was not registered. My marks in 10th 12th and especially graduation is not great at all. Where can I Apply?
