RC Practice - 23rd June
Boccaccioâs donnĂ©e is of an upper-class milieu where girls and young men can meet socially at ease and moveâthanks to wealthâout of plague-stricken Florence. In fact, it daringly reverses the standard form of morality, well summed up nearly contemporaneously by Trainiâs famous Triumph of Death fresco in the Campo Santo at Pisa. There, an upperclass, amorous, hedonistic group of young people is depicted as doomed to die. Boccaccioâs group consists very much of stylish survivors.
The code of behaviour they assume and also promulgate is impressively liberal, civilized and un-prudish. Seven girls who have met by chance at Mass at Santa Maria Novella plan their adventure and then co-opt three young men who happen to enter the church. The three are already known to them, but it is the girls who take the initiative, in a tactful, well-bred way, making it clear from the start that this is no invitation to rape. One has only to try to imagine Victorian girlsâin fiction or in factâbehaving with such a degree of sophistication to see that society by no means advances century by century. Boccaccio is a highly complex personality who, like many another writer, may have felt that his most famous work was not his best. But the Decameron became famous early on, and was avidly read and frequently translated throughout Europe.
The Decameron is a thoroughly Florentine book and a thoroughly social one, down to its structure. After the poetry of the Divine Comedy, it is very much prose, in every way. It glories in being undidactic, entertaining and openlyâthough by no means totallyâscabrous. Eventually it shocked and frightened its creator, who thus unwittingly or not recognized the force of its literary power. He repented and turned moralist and academic, leaving Florence for the small Tuscan town of Certaldo where he had probably been born and where in 1375 he died.Â
Part of his religious repentance was perhaps expressed by commissioning two altarpieces (sadly, not extant) for a local church. Whatever the medievalism enshrined in the Divine Comedy, the Decameron speaks for a robustly changed, relaxed vision, one set firmly upon earth. It is the opposite of lonely and ecstatic. It is a vision closer to that of Canterbury Tales than to the spiritual one of Piers Plowman.Â
It has female protagonists who seem mundane if not precisely modern compared with the real women mystics and saints of central Italy of a few generations before, women whose fierce, intense, sometimes horrifyingly palpable and semi-erotic visions read like real-life cantos from Danteâs poem. No doubt Boccaccio has idealized a little, but he puts forward a calm, sane case for freedom and humour and good manners between the sexes which, however palely, foreshadows the Shakespearean world of Beatrice and Benedick.Â
The theme of the stories his group exchange is human behaviourâoften as it is manifested under the pressure of lust or love. But the group is also shown indulging in chess and music and dancing (even bathing though separated by sex). The ladies frequently laugh and occasionally blush, while never losing their self-possession and their implicit command of the situation.
That the diversions of the Decameron are set brightly against the gruesome darkness of the Black Death is effective and also realistic. The plague is seen working psychologically as well as physically, horribly corrupting manners and morals, in addition to destroying life. Diversion and escape seem not frivolous but prudent, especially when provided by a pleasantly sited, well-stocked villa outside Florence, with amenities that extend to agreeable pictures in its rooms.
1. All of the following can be inferred about the narrative of Boccacioâs Decameron, EXCEPT:
A. The womenâs conduct in the work is in stark contrast with the depiction of same in Victorian novels.
B. It is set in the realistic backdrop of a great affliction, which works the charactersâ body and mind to the extent of moral liberation.
C. The indulgent and venturesome young women belong to an elite class and their adventurous journey takes them to their inevitable death.
D. The women characters are empowered and unrestrained by mores of their age.
2. Which of the following statements best summarizes the authorâs opinion in regarding Boccaccioâs view of his own work?
A. Boccaccio held more regard for the Decameron than for his later works.
B. Boccaccio was later dismayed but nonetheless convinced by the literary power of the Decameron.
C. Boccaccio was heartened that the Decameron was avidly read and translated.
D. Boccaccio was overly critical of his own work
3. According to the author, the Decameron differs markedly from its Italian predecessor The Divine Comedy in all BUT that
A. It is set in Florence.
B. It is written in a didactic style.
C. It has a tendency to be tedious.
D. It was actually not humorous in content
4. Which of the following statements is true about Decameron in relation to works by other writers?
A. The semi-erotic visions in this work resemble those in Danteâs poem Divine Comedy.Â
B. It was an unprecedented portrayal of spiritual freedom far away from the dogmatic Piers of Plowman
C. It anticipated the easy chemistry between two sexes of Shakespearean works.
D. It was not unlike the Triumph of Death in depicting the moral code of behavior considered appropriate for youth or women.

what is the work experience we can fill IN CAT form like i started my job in may that can i fill it as my 6 months wouldn't be completed when i will be filling the form..
The "KAMPUS" died today. Hope this settles the K vs I battle forever!
AIWTSAC 2020 A student who was meticulous since childhood had his first heartbreak not when he was rejected by a girl but when he failed to secure a decent rank in the coveted IITJEE exam. This failure actually shook his confidence to a great extent. This student was no one other than myself. Ever since then I had been searching for redemption. There was in me a burning desire to be among the top rankers in an all India entrance test of repute. During third year of engineering I got to know about CAT which was meant to give you admissions in top business schools across the country. I got the opportunity again to prove myself through CAT. CAT 2019 (24th November) - 94.xx percentile I prepared for CAT 2019 quite diligently. I joined IMS classroom coaching program. As an engineer I had a predilection for Quantitative Aptitude. For me CAT preparation was just about going after toughest of tough quants questions. Because solving unsolvable quants questions used to earn appreciation from everyone in class. But in this process, I ignored an equally important part of this exam which happens to be VARC in which I was already pathetic. I was that person who hadnât gone above Chetan Bhagat in novels :) My VARC scores used to fluctuate like heartbeats in ECG. Series of 70 percentiles in VARC wasnât a spot of bother for me anytime as I used to be happy with one 95 percentile I scored in one mock. Everyone including my mentors, friends had very high hopes for me. The only thing I was praying for was an easy VARC section. D day finally arrived. My worst fear came true, the VARC section turned out to be the toughest in recent years. I embarrassingly failed in the VARC section. I went on reading those passages two to three times as I wasnât able to comprehend anything. I was able to attempt just 14 questions. Other two sections became a mere formality for me. But I decided not to give up as I had slight hope of getting all 14 questions in VARC correct (I know that was too much to ask for). The CAT response key was released but I didnât have the courage to check my answers and calculate my scores. I wanted to get the shock directly on result day. Waiting for results was hard but I guess I had too much patience. Fast forward one month, results finally came. I still remember the cold evening and how numb my fingers were while I was entering my username and password on the CAT website. And again I lost, added one more medal of failure. I secured 94 percentile overall but with a âshiningâ 51 percentile in the VARC section. Those days were really tough. I used to receive lots of messages of people asking my percentile as if whenever they hear the word âCATâ, they used to remember my face only. CAT 2020 Journey I decided to prepare for the CAT one more time. I did not take up a job as I had never wanted to work in the IT sector and jobs in my under graduation stream (civil) are like John Cena (you canât see them). Not taking up the job is something I would never recommend to anyone. Though you will be finding some difficulty in managing your job along with preparation but job gives you a cushion against shocks on D day. I knew that I could prepare for QA on my own, but for VARC I had to look for something that could save my day. Since I had gone through CAT once, I knew what CAT VARC was like. For almost half a day, I thoroughly searched the internet for the right course, watching many videos and exploring the free contents of many websites. I came across Bodhee Prepâs website and YouTube channel. I went through the videos, explanations and felt that this was exactly what I had been looking for. Many can teach VARC but not all have the right content. Bodhee Prep had the right teaching and the right content in the right quantity. Brijesh Sirâs mentoring was something that was invaluable in the course of my VARC prep. We sat together online three times during the course of my CAT 20 prep to do the analysis of the VARC section. I donât know how many teachers would do that in the offline mode, much less in the online mode. There were several roadblocks in my journey. During the initial stage of my preparation, my relationship of four years was broken. A person who was there for me during my thick and thins for four complete years wonât be there for me now and this particular thought used to kill me from inside. Trust me bada dard hua! Then, I was detected corona positive along with every member in my family just four weeks before CAT. I feared for my father and mother as they were in the vulnerable age group, but by godâs grace they were fine. I, on the other hand, had to face the brunt of this deadly virus thanks to my weak immune system. For one week, I had high fever along with severe body ache. Even during those tough times, I kept preparing. As my eyes used to strain if I looked at the screen, I got past year papers printed and I used to solve them. After two complete weeks, I felt quite okay. But thatâs not the end of hardships. I did make a blunder during those two months. I didnât fill forms of MDI (which happens to be heaven for GEMs) and SPJIMR. I realized I have missed out on some important of my few probable calls. But I decided to hang in there and give the 2020 CAT my best shot. One thing I was quite sure of was that CAT 2020 will be as surprising as the year 2020 has been. We didnât even have a proper idea of the number of questions which would be there in the paper. I got 3rd slot and trust me it was a sign of relief for me. I never wanted to get all surprises as a slot 1 candidate. D - Day (29th November) VARC was looking tough but I was prepared for the worst. I decided to keep calm and attempt as many questions as I could. One good thing I did was to attempt not in the order in which they appeared but to choose them according to my comfort level. I moved quite confidently to the DILR section because of my decent VARC performance. But IIM Indore had some other things in store for me. I wasnât even able to comprehend the second set after solving the first one. My below average performance in DILR impacted my QA section. Even after that I was able to solve a decent chunk of QA questions. This time I was quite confident of my performance which actually gave me courage to count my marks from the response sheet. I was super elated to see 116 as my overall score with a whopping 55 marks in VARC. This time I scored more marks in VARC than my VARC percentile last year. But my DILR was making me worry as I wasnât quite sure whether I would breach the 80 percentile sectional mark with that score. I decided to patiently wait till the results are out. During that waiting period I did ask every single person who knew even C of CAT about my chances of scoring above 80 in DILR. Every validation was enough assuring for me. I did well in other management entrances like SNAP, NMAT and got calls from them also. Results day (2nd January) 2nd January was the result day. This time, my hands weren't shaking as I was fully prepared. To avoid the direct impact of the shock, I had intensively matched my answers with the response sheet and was more or less prepared to face the results. The results flashed, and managed to give me a shock anyways. Even though my overall percentile came to be 99.57, I had missed the mark in LRDI as my percentile was 79.8. Missing the 80%le mark, I made peace with the fact that it would cost me some calls. I did score 99.95 percentile in VARC.But I knew I'd get calls from the two colleges which were my dream ones- FMS and IIM Shillong. My parents were super proud of me. That day I realized that last year was tough but it was all worth it. Congratulatory messages from everyone started pouring in. I got other calls too, and began preparing earnestly for interviews. I wanted to leave no stone unturned in my quest to get to my dream college. As it turned out, IIM Shillong's interview happened to be the best interview I had given so far in my life. I answered all their questions thoroughly and showcased all my abilities. Then I went for the FMS interview. The panel appreciated my knowledge of my undergrad subject and remarked that I was a good civil engineer! But it wasn't meant to be, as I wasn't selected for FMS, guess they wanted me to keep on building bridges all my life (pun very much intended). Final Admission Finally, a day after my birthday, on 14th May, I got the news that IIM Shillong's results were out. For two hours, I tried opening their website but to no avail. Those two hours were the most grueling and nerve-wracking hours of my life! But all's well that ends well! As the results showed things in my favor, my happiness knew no bounds! Those were the best words of my life. The culmination of all my hard work was before me. So, if I can do it, you too surely can. There are two things that I learnt during this phase. Have a burning desire to achieve the goal that you have set before yourself. You will find the right people, material and assistance if your passion is intense. Second, the pain you feel today is the strength you feel tomorrow. You will never know how strong you are, until being strong is your only choice. I know it's not ABC, but trust me it's not even an inch less than those for me. You will loose people but don't loose hope. You will have better options in later life. RC Practice - 24th June
The deep sea typically has a sparse fauna dominated by tiny worms and crustaceans, with an even sparser distribution of larger animals. However, near hydrothermal vents, areas of the ocean where warm water emerges from subterranean sources, live remarkable densities of huge clams, blind crabs, and fish.
Most deep-sea faunas rely for food on particulate matter ultimately derived from photosynthesis, falling from above. The food supplies necessary to sustain the large vent communities, however, must be many times the ordinary fallout. The first reports describing vent faunas proposed two possible sources of nutrition: bacterial chemosynthesis, production of food by bacteria using energy derived from chemical changes, and advection, the drifting of food materials from surrounding regions. Later, evidence in support of the idea of intense local chemosynthesis was accumulated: hydrogen sulfide was found in vent water; many vent-site bacteria were found to be capable of chemosynthesis; and extremely large concentrations of bacteria were found in samples of vent water thought to be pure. This final observation seemed decisive. If such astonishing concentrations of bacteria were typical of vent outflow, then food within the vent would dwarf any contribution from advection. Hence, the widely quoted conclusion was reached that bacterial chemosynthesis provides the foundation for hydrothermal-vent food chainsâan exciting prospect because no other communities on Earth are independent of photosynthesis.
There are, however, certain difficulties with this interpretation. For example, some of the large sedentary organisms associated with vents are also found at ordinary deep-sea temperatures many meters from the nearest hydrothermal sources. This suggests that bacterial chemosynthesis is not a sufficient source of nutrition for these creatures. Another difficulty is that similarly dense populations of large deep-sea animals have been found in the proximity of âsmokersââvents where water emerges at temperatures up to 350â. No bacteria can survive such heat, and no bacteria were found there. Unless smokers are consistently located near more hospitable warm-water vents, chemosynthesis can account for only a fraction of the vent faunas. It is conceivable, however, that these large, sedentary organisms do in fact feed on bacteria that grow in warm-water vents, rise in the vent water, and then rain in peripheral areas to nourish animals living some distance from the warm-water vents.
Nonetheless advection is a more likely alternative food source. Research has demonstrated that advective flow, which originates near the surface of the ocean where suspended particulate matter accumulates, transports some of that matter and water to the vents. Estimates suggest that for every cubic meter of vent discharge, 350 milligrams of particulate organic material would be advected into the vent area. Thus, for an average-sized vent, advection could provide more than 30 kilograms of potential food per day. In addition, it is likely that small live animals in the advected water might be killed or stunned by thermal and/or chemical shock, thereby contributing to the food supply of vents.
1. According to the author of the passage, which of the following best describes the source of nutrition for deep-sea vent fauna?
(A) It is independent of photosynthesis and relies on bacterial chemosynthesis.
(B) The huge amount of particulate matter falling form sea âsurface fulfills much of the need
(C) The drifting of particulate matter from surrounding regions fulfills more nutritional needs than chemosynthesis by bacteria
(D) Photosynthesis may play no smaller role than chemosynthesis in fulfilling food needs near vents.
2. The information in the passage suggests that the majority of deep-sea faunas that live in nonvent habitats have which of the following characteristics?
(A) They do not normally feed on particles of food in the water.
(B) They are smaller than many vent faunas.
(D) They derive nutrition from a chemosynthetic food source.
(E) They congregate around a single main food source.
3. The primary purpose of the passage is to
(A) reconstruct the evolution of a natural phenomenon
(B) establish unequivocally the accuracy of a hypothesis
(C) survey explanations for a natural phenomenon and determine which is best supported by evidenceïŒDïŒ
(D) entertain criticism of the deep-sea research and provide an effective response
4. Which of the following does the author cite as a weakness in the argument that bacterial chemosynthesis provides the foundation for the food chains at deep-sea vents?
(A) Vents are colonized by some of the same animals found in other areas of the ocean floor.
(B) Vent water does not contain sufficient quantities of hydrogen sulfide.
(C) Bacteria cannot produce large quantities of food quickly enough.
(D) Smokers are usually found in the vicinity of warm-water vents..
5. Which of the following, if true, would most weaken the authorâs argument?
(A) The number of large animals found in nonvent areas of deep sea is not high.
(B) Warm-water vents with phenomenal amount of bacteria are often present in the vicinity of smokers.
(C) The movement of matter associated with areas in and around deep sea vents with relation to oceanic surface is outward rather than inward.
(D) A considerable number of large animals are found in nonvent areas of deep sea.
