This could be construed as a rant as well, but for the most part I'm just trying to understand the rationale of the admissions committee so please bear with me. What is the idea behind a blanket threshold for every engineering stream from every college in the country? Speaking from the perspective of an engineer but pretty sure this will strike a chord with some of you non-engineers too.
There are so many things I'm disappointed with:
- Grade deflation/inflation exists in colleges. The highest CGPA in my engineering department was a 9.1. At a 8.43, I'm in the top 10 students within my batch of 100 engineers - but still below the 85% criterion for some of the IIMs awarding full points.
- Why is the college ranking not taken into account while shortlisting? An 8.7 from IITB and an 8.7 from a non-IIT are two very different stories. Why should they be awarded equal weightage?
- Why not take extracurriculars and PORs into consideration during the initial shortlist? What about the 8.2er with several publications, PORs, extracurricular achievements and oratory skills who lost a call to a 9.5er who could be rejected later in the GDPI process because he was a shut-in?
- I am STRONGLY of the opinion that there's minimal to zero difference in the mind of a 99.5x%iler and a 99.8x%iler. Above 99.5%ile CAT boils down to luck. Why give more points to a 99.8x%iler? Why not award equal weightage to everyone above your cutoff, like the foreign schools do with the GRE/TOEFL and GMAT?
- Furthermore, if you are conducting a damn exam, what is the rationale behind having a tiny weightage to it?
Am I salty? Yes, I totally am.
Is this a rant? Not really.
Would love to hear your thoughts on this. It's just one of those days I'm really frustrated with the way things run in this country, man. Stupid fkn rat-race.

Had a chat with an IIM U alum, and came to know that the average summer internship package is 25,000!? And even after the reports being audited, there's some inflation done beforehand!
Makes me question why have I even been contemplating between NMIMS and new IIMs. , (IIM U being one of the better new IIMs)
