🐈 CAT Exam 2020-21 Preparation, Exam Dates, Results & Discussion – PaGaLGuY (Part 1)

I have been at PG since 2019. Will be giving my CAT hopefully this or the next year. But some people have always been there to help others. @Arsene96 is always at the forefront and so is @IIM_Groot, @ashwinhari, @FranklyCAT of all the others. Just by observing I have learned some of my best life lessons out here. @Arsene96 , your AIWSTAC is bookmarked and added on my home screen be it PC, iPad, Phone ... I literally had goosebumps while reading it. This is it ... it’s unlike any movie ... the reality. It was as if I was walking along with you to unravel your entire journey. The perseverance you have shown, well even if I say I could only imagine ... I would be lying.

If Morgan Freeman says the ultimate Hope dialogue then for me you and @ashwinhari have been the epitome of it. You hear such stuff and feel good but when you see people putting it into practice you get hell proud and inspired. I don’t know you, but the story strikes a chord with everyone on PG. I have told my friends that there is a guy on PG who is just ... amazing and would definitely say, a person you look up to. Hell, I even had a status on WA congratulating you for your laurels when I don’t even know you personally and here I am sharing your exemplary story with everyone.

As someone said, and I I would repeat ... I envy all those bastards who are going to be your batchmates at IIM-C.

Hope you have an exhilarating journey ahead and you continue to soar high. I connected with you on LinkedIN way back but never knew who you were. All of the adjectives would fall short today. I am about to join Infosys and that’s a common connect with you when you said for a college that has max as 6-7 LPA ... in the same boat and I am all set to ferry it until it reaches its destination of the holy trinity. Few days back you said something which has stayed with me ... Hardwork must be consistent and long term to start making a difference to your life. One spark in the darkness will not change the trajectory of your life.

Signing off with this ... @Arsene96 I must admit I have stalked you but SIR, with all due respect you are one of the finest person I have seen. Hopefully we could connect! Thank you so much!

Cheers. Be you. Love You

P.S.: Congratulations @ashwinhari. Read your AIWSTAC 2018 and was stumped. You made us all believe that what happens .. happens for the best. Truly inspirational and also the fact that you need to believe yourself, have a belief on your skill set. And I won’t say it again as everyone but @IIM_Groot ... all the best for future results. A lot of good ones waiting for you sir, saw someone post a FMS meme soon to turn into reality. And congratulations to @FranklyCAT as well on converting the holy trinity. So much happy for all of you and all others who have hung in there and go to their B-school dream

IIM-C converted :)

Its been two years since I stumbled upon PG and it has been a blessing. I have met some great people here who have been my motivator and competitior, special thanks to New Dream team members.

Finally the jouney ends here for me. I will always be here if any one wants to connect.

Congrats @Arsene96 , Despite taking so many punches you are The true Invincible. Truly an Arsene man.

Hoping your Wisdom will keep guiding us through the Darkess. Somehow this gloomy day had a ray of light for all us GEMs.

I just wanted to say that I am humbled by all the things I see here. It is rare in a life to be able to see for yourself what your values have meant to people and to be told so vigorously and repeatedly that you have influenced someone's life positively, made their trek in the dark a little easier. Here I am being told again and again.

I want to thank each and every person who had made/is making these posts. IT is overwhelming to see. I cannot explain how and why this is happening. I am struggling to see how simple comments and advice about CAT prep can build such a dam of well wishing.

I am adding 'able to inspire' to my CV very soon. :)

I am struggling to reply to everyone because there are over 50 messages and over 50 notifications, traffic I have never seen before on my PG despite the growth. Please forgive me if I miss out on replying to you, and ping me again a few days later if this is important.

While I reply to you, I am aware that this may be a tough time for some. I had a lot of tough times in the past few years. I used to listen to some things nearly every time I got depressed. The following link has one of those things. You might want to give it a listen even if you do not know anything about football and you have no idea about Arsenal.

That impeccable French accent and the wisdom in those words gave me great strength because I believed in his values. Listen to the end and you will see why I speak so often and so highly of him. Hope this is a fun timepass even for those who are anxiously awaiting results.

Thank you everyone once again from the bottom of my heart. I don't know what to say. This is like waking up one morning after a life well lived and seeing the obituary columns full of praise while I am still alive and reading them. This occurrence gives me even greater conviction than before in my values. You have given me adamantine self respect for the rest of my life. Thank you so much.

@Arsene96 my man! I am so happy for you brother. And indeed "the whole PG prayed for you". Wish you all the luck and success ahead. Lots of Love.

C it is. Finally!! Jokar for Life..🤘

When we go to any Bschool, is it necessary to have only one page resume? 2 pages are not allowed at all?

any tiss candidate here?? do you know when they will conduct interview or it is scrapped??

Lucky is running at a speed of 10m/s. Mr. Batra, who is 5 km behind him is chasing him at a speed of 20m/s. There is a dog, running at 30m/s, that starts from Mr. Batra, and keeps on running to and fro betwwen him and Lucky till Lucky gets caught. Find the distance covered by dog in forward direction.

Hello Puys

What is the scenario related to UnderDog Team (UDT) 2020. How to get added to that?

During online interview, do we need to tell our name when asked about "Tell me about yourself" ??

RC practice- 14th May

The deep sea typically has a sparse fauna dominated by tiny worms and crustaceans, with an even sparser distribution of larger animals. However, near hydrothermal vents, areas of the ocean where warm water emerges from subterranean sources, live remarkable densities of huge clams, blind crabs, and fish.

Most deep-sea faunas rely for food on particulate matter ultimately derived from photosynthesis, falling from above. The food supplies necessary to sustain the large vent communities, however, must be many times the ordinary fallout. The first reports describing vent faunas proposed two possible sources of nutrition: bacterial chemosynthesis, production of food by bacteria using energy derived from chemical changes, and advection, the drifting of food materials from surrounding regions. Later, evidence in support of the idea of intense local chemosynthesis was accumulated: hydrogen sulfide was found in vent water; many vent-site bacteria were found to be capable of chemosynthesis; and extremely large concentrations of bacteria were found in samples of vent water thought to be pure. This final observation seemed decisive. If such astonishing concentrations of bacteria were typical of vent outflow, then food within the vent would dwarf any contribution from advection. Hence, the widely quoted conclusion was reached that bacterial chemosynthesis provides the foundation for hydrothermal-vent food chains—an exciting prospect because no other communities on Earth are independent of photosynthesis.

There are, however, certain difficulties with this interpretation. For example, some of the large sedentary organisms associated with vents are also found at ordinary deep-sea temperatures many meters from the nearest hydrothermal sources. This suggests that bacterial chemosynthesis is not a sufficient source of nutrition for these creatures. Another difficulty is that similarly dense populations of large deep-sea animals have been found in the proximity of “smokers”—vents where water emerges at temperatures up to 350℃. No bacteria can survive such heat, and no bacteria were found there. Unless smokers are consistently located near more hospitable warm-water vents, chemosynthesis can account for only a fraction of the vent faunas. It is conceivable, however, that these large, sedentary organisms do in fact feed on bacteria that grow in warm-water vents, rise in the vent water, and then rain in peripheral areas to nourish animals living some distance from the warm-water vents.

Nonetheless advection is a more likely alternative food source. Research has demonstrated that advective flow, which originates near the surface of the ocean where suspended particulate matter accumulates, transports some of that matter and water to the vents. Estimates suggest that for every cubic meter of vent discharge, 350 milligrams of particulate organic material would be advected into the vent area. Thus, for an average-sized vent, advection could provide more than 30 kilograms of potential food per day. In addition, it is likely that small live animals in the advected water might be killed or stunned by thermal and/or chemical shock, thereby contributing to the food supply of vents.

1. According to the author of the passage, which of the following best describes the source of nutrition for deep-sea vent fauna?

(A) It is independent of photosynthesis and relies on bacterial chemosynthesis.

(B) The huge amount of particulate matter falling form sea –surface fulfills much of the need

(C) The drifting of particulate matter from surrounding regions fulfills more nutritional needs than chemosynthesis by bacteria

(D) Photosynthesis may play no smaller role than chemosynthesis in fulfilling food needs near vents.

2. The information in the passage suggests that the majority of deep-sea faunas that live in nonvent habitats have which of the following characteristics?

(A) They do not normally feed on particles of food in the water.

(B) They are smaller than many vent faunas.

(D) They derive nutrition from a chemosynthetic food source.

(E) They congregate around a single main food source.

3. The primary purpose of the passage is to

(A) reconstruct the evolution of a natural phenomenon

(B) establish unequivocally the accuracy of a hypothesis

(C) survey explanations for a natural phenomenon and determine which is best supported by evidence(D)

(D) entertain criticism of the deep-sea research and provide an effective response

4. Which of the following does the author cite as a weakness in the argument that bacterial chemosynthesis provides the foundation for the food chains at deep-sea vents?

(A) Vents are colonized by some of the same animals found in other areas of the ocean floor.

(B) Vent water does not contain sufficient quantities of hydrogen sulfide.

(C) Bacteria cannot produce large quantities of food quickly enough.

(D) Smokers are usually found in the vicinity of warm-water vents..

5. Which of the following, if true, would most weaken the author’s argument?

(A) The number of large animals found in nonvent areas of deep sea is not high.

(B) Warm-water vents with phenomenal amount of bacteria are often present in the vicinity of smokers.

(C) The movement of matter associated with areas in and around deep sea vents with relation to oceanic surface is outward rather than inward.

(D) A considerable number of large animals are found in nonvent areas of deep sea.

Hello PG Family! Looking back at where I started, I couldn't resist myself from writing this. After the failures in CAT'17 and CAT'18, I was thinking about some platforms that could motivate and allow me to interact with the serious CAT aspirants. Being already a part of Pagalguy, I had decided to be an active member of Pagalguy in the summer of 2019 and this particular decision has changed everything for me. Fast forward to 2020 summer, I got what I dreamt of from the past 3 years. I have converted the HOLY TRINITY and will be joining IIM A. I would like to thank PG, DT folks (both groups) and Kishor sir (my guide), this wouldn't have been possible without your support. Thank you everyone who are part of this wonderful journey.
