๐Ÿˆ CAT Exam 2020-21 Preparation, Exam Dates, Results & Discussion โ€“ PaGaLGuY (Part 1)

I have a farfetched idea about my career- I want to be a fund manager, in a Top Asset Management Company, in India, like HDFC Mutual funds, ICICI Prudential, SBI, Kotak Mahindra. When I get financial independence, which is ~ 1-1.5 crores worth of Portfolio which generates ~ 8-9% CAGR, I'll work on growing food through hydroponics, and helping Indian Farmers do the same. Maybe, I'll start a startup or be an angel investor in one, If I have enough funds.ย

I'd like to setup Psych rooms in Busiest corners of Cities, where people after a busy day, have a placebo psychedelic and meditative experience. Starting a restaurent is cliche. Thing is, if all I am struggling to do, is feed myself, and be able to afford bills, and take care of a family (If I find some girl :P), I'd just be like any other person : Working late, coming home, watching TV, Kids, wife, sleep. Repeat.ย

IIT Delhi and Mumbai shortlist released ??

What is it with IIM K's resume writing this year? Are they themselves giving you marks based on interview?

Is the personality assessment awarded any points for final selection or is it just for the purpose of GI2? There was not enough space to explain an entire incident and we were not asked to elaborate anything from it in the interview. Anyone who has been through the process, please help.

What the lowest percentile at which one have a call from MDI-Gurgaon(for a non-engineer male fresher)

A cute girl smiled at me. That was the best thing. CAP 2019, Mumbai WAT - Will advancement in AI and ML, affect unemployment (something like that) Panel : how was your day? Me : The wat topic was interesting. Then asked about my stand on that. Panel :Tell me something not in your CV Me : told about blitz chess and algo trading. Was speaking about algo trading till she stopped me. Panel : HRD minister? Me : Don't know. I know external affairs. Panel : Which subject you like in acads? Me : fluid mechanics/ thermodynamics/composite materials. Panel : Reynolds number. Me : i know it is used to measure turbulence in fluid flow, don't know the number. Messed up the numbers relating to turbulence. Panel : Grashoff's number? Me : don't know. Panel : third law of thermodynamics? Is there a third law? Me : Yes,it relates to crystalline solids at absolute temperature. Couldn't recall exactly. Panel : Anything you read in current affairs? Me : budget. Us-china. Effect of coronovirus on Chinese economy. Told about Chinese stocks plummeting 10% and talked about solar panel imports. Panel : fiscal deficit ? Me : 3.8% Panel : I need number Me : 3.8% of GDP, I began to calculate. Panel : what's India's GDP? Me : 2.85 trillion US dollars at market value. Panel : about recent news of pharma companies affected by corono? I say price increases 40% but I was vague. Panel : WHO name for coronovirus? Me : don't know. I kinda stuttered while saying coronovirus, so that's the low point. Panel : Champion in chess and where is he from? Me : Magnus Carlson from Norway Panel : about job. What's the thing you don't like about your boss? Something more about that. Me : there's no one under him, and he's always busy. He knows what he is doing though, so I wouldn't recommend any hard changes. They handed me everything on a platter, and I couldn't perform. PI was below average ( my communication was kinda messy and .. up acads), but definitely better than my 2017 PI. If lucky, IIM Sirmaur/BG, I think I'll convert sambalpur and Jammu. New IIMs -not a chance.

The typical poll : 97.85/93/91.7/66.1/13 months.GEM WAT - Average [ ~ 4-6/10] PI - Slightly below average. [ 12-14/30] if AVG is 15-17.

  • Only IIM sambalpur and IIM Jammu
  • Hard luck, try again later.
  • All 4 baby IIMs
  • IIM Raipur/IIM Kashipur

Anyone who has cleared CFA 1 here? Would it be advised to give the June exam , considering I start preparation now ?

Have IIM A interviews begun? There is no group too. Have been itching to read a few awt pi experiences. It looks like I'd be the first to post.

What was the reason the CAP Panel was asking for CAT Scorecards, aren't they supposed to not know it while interviewing?ย

CAP 2020 WAT-PI Experience

Venue: Goldfinch Hotel, Andheri E, Mumbai

Date & Time: 18-2-2020, Afternoon slot

Profile: ย GEM CAT/X/XII/Grad/WE โ€“ 96.93[98.69/97.83/80.83]/9.8CGPA/78.2/7.24 CGPA/30 months in Federal Bank

WAT:

Arrived at the centre at 12:00 Noon. The document verification went ahead smoothly and was completed in a jiffy. The WAT started at around 2:10 PM, and concluded by 2:30. We were given a rough sheet which was small and blank, and a main one-lined sheet with two sides, in which we had to submit our WAT. The WAT topic was โ€œIs corruption the root cause of Indiaโ€™s Socio-Economic problems?โ€ย

I was able to complete a structured essay. I cited examples as to how corruption begins at grassroots levels and is inherently imbibe in our system. Gave an introduction as to how manโ€™s greed is never satisfied and it is this unquenched thirst that drives corruption. Wrote about how this creates income inequality and how we are responsible for it as well. Concluded by saying that even though itโ€™s the root problem, it can be weeded out by collective action, introducing more transparency and more activisms on the RTI front. I felt it was an average WAT by some standards.

After WAT, the conductors asked if anyone is ready for the interview immediately. I skipped the coffee and snacks and went straight upstairs to my panel. I was second in line. My overall interview lasted about 10 minutes.ย

PI:

2 panelists. 1 Male and 1 Female. None of them smiled.

M Asked my name upon entering.

Me: Sir, shok means sadness. Ashok means the one without sadness.

M: So are you an engineer? Which field.

Me: Yes, CSE.

M: Okay, so is the world analog or digital. Justify your answer.

Me: [A little stumped, I was expecting technical questions related to my under graduation]. Sir, the world is analog. A digital system is confined to 2 states, merely 1s and 0s. But an analog system can take many states in between those, and thatโ€™s how I perceive the reflection of the world.ย

M: So, in an analog world, how would you go about implementing digital technologies and methods on it?

Me: [Where is this going?] I explained how digital systems are accurate, citing examples of watch. Spoke about feasibility.ย

M: So if a system is more feasible, would you sacrifice accuracy for it?

Me: I said it depends on system. I told how I use a digital watch, and am not concerned about accuracy, but in a precise system like a jet airplane, it matters and feasibility takes a back seat.

M: Okay, so Iโ€™ll say a few words now and you tell me what comes to your mind first.

Me: [ears turning red due to pressure] Okay, sir.

M: TV, Me: Entertainment, M: Chai, Me: somebody sitting, M: Table, Me: All items kept, M: Books, Me: Wealth of knowledge, M: Big, Me: Humongous, large, M: but those are synonyms. Does nothing else strike you when I say big? Me: [Sheepishly] Sir, big dreams and ambitions. M: Ok, Iโ€™m done [turns towards F]

F: So, you work as a clerk in a bank. What are your roles? Are you still working? [Looks at profile detail form]

Me: I resigned from Federal Bank a couple of days back. I have worked in Vasai and Munnar branches during my tenure. I then went on to explain my roles.

F: So what made you get into banking after engineering?

Me: Spoke about how I was influenced by my father who himself is a banker. Also told how I was interested in the financial domain, and how a job in a bank in entry level would open up options.

F: So why MBA now?

Me: Told how certain verticals and niche departments required additional qualifications such as an MBA and relevant certifications, and now is the right time to do it.

F: Do you play sports?

Me: I said I used to play football while in school and college level, but havenโ€™t played in that level since I started working.

M: Do you read books?

Me: Told I used to read, but now not so much. [I felt the last the questions couldโ€™ve been answered with more interest from my side, as they were looking for more things to ask questions on.]

F: what are the biggest challenges you faced in workplace?ย

Me: told about how customers have undue demands from time to time and how it is tough to satisfy them all in a stringent working condition.

F: So how would you do things better as an MBA graduate and a manager in the same environment?

Me: answered as to how Iโ€™d have more authority and responsibility and experience to tackle these situations better, and how the words coming from a bank branch manager are more appeasing towards customers than from a clerk.

F: Okay, thank you.

Me: [taken aback at the abrupt ending to the interview] Ok, shall I leave?

F: Sure. All the best.

M: thank you, please tell the next candidate to wait.ย

Me: Ok, thank you sir.

Overall, an 8-10 minute interview, which I felt was a below average PI performance, as I fumbled a bit and seemed disinterested to initiate the conversation sometimes. But maybe that was because I was startled at the random beginning to the interview in the first place. No hopes for a convert for me.ย

It's been a couple of weeks since my interviews began and here are my observations, hope it helps others as well: 1. General Awareness has gained much more importance as compared to last year. Perhaps reflective of the chaos the world is under right now. That is not to say it wasn't there last year but almost everyone i know was asked deeply about current affairs this time around. Read the newspapers daily for at least a couple of hours and you should survive the storm. 2. Stress interviews have been far and few in between for most of the candidates. The ones who've experienced it though, well, let's just say The Exorcist isn't the scariest thing they've come across. 3. Dressing well is very, very important. Cliched, but true. 4. Ethical Dilemaa questions are trending: I was legit asked at SIBM interview- "Would you kill 70,000 people to save 7 billion?" 5. Most people haven't really liked the idea of 18 people in IIFT GDs. 6. If there's something catchy in your resume, make sure you work hard on it. Kashmir, conspicuous by its absence in the first two interviews of mine made a glorious comeback in the latter four and dominated the discussion. 7. Results: Well, you have done what you can do. Interviews can be taxing with so much travelling, anxiety, stress and whatnot. Do take a day off if there's a two week gap between your interviews. I for one, am meeting some of the best PG folks I've come across, this Sunday. Your friends are life supports and they'll help you get through this phase. All the best. No matter what the end results are, it's important to remember that it's just a part of your journey; not your destination.

Expectation vs Reality
