GEM fresher 9/7/8, CAT 19 : 90.27%ile
Date : 13th February 2020
Location : Xavier Institute of Management & Research, Churchgate, Mumbai.
1st MBA interview of my lifeā¦..Reporting time was 8 am & I reached the venue at 8:45š¤¦š½āāļø (my Ola cab got into an accident on the way *smh* and also, thanks to Mumbai traffic and Metro construction for adding to the delay). But thankfully, the process of GE-PI was not yet started as the registration and student interaction session with current IMT students was still going on.
GE : 10 people, (Something on the lines of..) Stubble burning in the states of Punjab and Haryana causing air pollution in Delhi. Suggest some innovative measures that would help the govt and the people for the same.
Last panel (No. 4) and last Sr. no. for me as I was the last one to register.
3 panelists, One female in her late 40s (F), one male in his 50s (M1), (both were economics professors) and a tall male in his late 30s who was an industry expert (M2).
F: So, youāre the last one of the slotā¦must have got an idea from everybody about what we are asking and what did they say about us? *all 3 laughing and smiling*
Me: *smiling* I was avoiding the talk with those coming out after their interview so that I donāt go in with any preconceived notion, but I overheard them saying that two of them are from economics background and theyāre asking a lot of things related to the economy, budget, etc. but overall theyāre good.
F: What they said? Weāre goodā¦or weāre cool? *laughing and talking to M1* Yaar, ye baat bhi sahi hai..our eco background makes us biased...we shouldāve quizzed on other things as wellā¦ Chalo fir, weāll ask you things other than economics.
M2: So tell us something about yourselfā¦
Me: *told my prepped answer*
M2: What specialization youād opt for?
Me: Iād go for general management..pgdm coreā¦ as I told that I would like to get into product management in future and that as a product manager one would need to have knowledge regarding all the fields..Fin,Mark,Ops,etc.
M1: So how did you prepare for the interview?
Me: Nothing special...just read online that one should prep for current affairs, acads and work ex. (if any) thatās it.
M1: So tell us what have you read recently in current affairs, news?
Me: tells him about todayās headline about Trumpās visit to India, Coronavirus, budgetā¦.Ā
M1: *interrupts* So youāve read about the budget? Whatās DDT? What was mentioned regarding it in the budget?
Me: *told*
F: Areā¦.hum phir economy pe hi aa jaayenge.. *everyone laughs*
F: *Checking out my profile form* You donāt have any extracurricular activities? Your acads are good thoughā¦
Me: (ikrā¦.smh)*smiling*
M2: *interrupts* So you told us youāre from Mumbai right? Tell us how many lines (railway) are there in Mumbai and where do they start and end?
Me: Western line from Churchgate, here itself to Dahanu, Harbour form Jogeshwari (*smh* forgot that was extended upto Goregaon) to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CST) and Panvel and Central from CST toā¦.hmmā¦ā¦
M2: CST to? You said you were born and brought up in Mumbai and you donāt know?Even we donāt know as we are not from Mumbai..*chuckles*
F:*interrupts* Okay soā¦you know who was Shivaji?
Me: told...Shivaji Maharaj was a great Maratha warrior and emperor and how he fought with the Mughalsā¦
F: *interrupts* Who was Shivajiās son?
Me: Sambhaji Maharaj..
F: Who were the peshwas?
(Told)Ā
M2: Soā¦tell us about any famous personality that you follow or sayā¦ your role model?
Me: I donāt specifically have any role model but if I had to say one personality it would be Sundar Pichai..
M2: Why? (Me: told)ā¦ Any other famous personality from the Indian business scenario or say any great bollywood actor or.. (F *interrupts*, politician bhi bol do)ā¦(M2: I was avoiding that..) *all 3 laugh*
Me: told Ratan Tataā¦then he asked whyā¦.told..
M2: Okayā¦ so now, say, weāre already done with selecting candidates for XYZ specializations and weāre only left with Business analytics and operations for youā¦which one youād choose? Or would you go for some other college
Me: Told that as of now I didnāt have any specialization in mind and Iād rather research about these two and then make an informed decision but for now Iād say Iāll go for operations and also told him that this was my first interview of the season and Iāll think about opting for other colleges only after I see what I convert this time and then make a choice.
M2: Okay Iām doneā¦ F: Okay, weāre done..thank you.
Okayish GE (we could not conclude/present finally) and the PI felt more like a general conversation/chit-chat that lasted for 15mins...felt like they were bored by then(~1:30pm) and wanted to go for a lunch.. :-|Ā

Here goes my cap experience word by word, check it out and enjoy. Pi- 2 male panelists in their 30s P1- hi, you are the only one who has not ticked anything in their extra curriculars. Me- yes sir, I have participated in activities but did not have the certifications so didn't mention. P2- so if u get all 9 iims which one will you choose Me - gave diplomatic answer, he was not impressed. P2- So u work in infosys Me - yes sir, P1- now done with my profile detail form shaking his head. P2 - have u heard about tcs Me - I have sir P1- tell me it's salary structure for a fresher Me - When tcs came in our college it offered xxx( correct amount) P1 - ok tell me what it offers to someone with your work ex(I have 18 months work ex, gem) Me - told P1- tell me about salary and promotion at infosys Me - told him in how we are evaluated . P1- named one place have u heard of it? I work in kerela and I think that city was in kerela Sorry sir not heard. P1 - have u heard of chandrayan, which organisation launched it and it's headquarters Me - Told correctly. P1- Is isro in Kerala? Me- yes sir, in fact it is in the same lane as infosys Trivandrum (one division of isro is at trivandrum, should have told correct name vss) P1- launching centre of isro Me - I am sorry sir I don't recall P2- (first time) told correct city and said it was in the news you should have known Me - yes sir, I have heard it I didn't recall the name. P1- u r from dehradun it is such a beautiful place u were there for 4 years and u did nothing,( he started naming a few places and said Fri has film shootings also) Me- Immediately yes sir Student of the year was shot there, I went to see the shoot alos Started laughing, we're u in the movie Me - no, they said they needed taller and bulkier people. He was amused, taller than u?(in hindi) kya kaha unhone peeche khade ho jao Me smiling no sir they said frame ke bahar chale jao, Both laughed. P2- I do not get this u have not done any extracurriculars, u must have some hobby then Me- I like working out and I read manga P2- what is manga Me explained (hoping they stop asking about extracurriculars?) Ok so it is cartoon Me - no sir, Here main character has a purpose and a story, goals and aspirations. (They were not very interested) P2- so like amar chitra katha Me - no sir, they are not short stories, in fact one manga has been going on for more than 10 years(one piece fan) P2- ok so like ekta kapoor serials Me - with a smile, no sir here the main character doesn't come back to life 2-3 times Both laughed loudly. P1 - why MBA Told. Ok we r done. Me- sir, I have been awarded at infosys, The certificate is in my file( he had already been through my file?) Both - yes yes we have checked your folder Me - thanked and left. The End. don't know what to make of it was just a conversation, I mentioned Java as my area of work, they didn't ask questions from it.
IIM Rohtak interview Afternoon slot Wat topic- Avenge or Revenge PI- 2 panelist (1 male and 1 female) Extempore on megers of psu banks Questions regarding my research papers- Answered What newspaper do you read and what are the headlines today?- Answered Why do you want to leave physics? Answered What do you like to do in your free time? Answered (mentioned football) Number of teams in ISL? Favourite player and why? When is his birthday? Why do you like him the most? Any new record made by him? How many teams are in laliga? Who is the most expensive player in laliga in terms of salary and transfer fee both. Who is the manager of F.C. Barcelona? What is hand goal? Did it ever happen? Answered all the football related questions accurately and precisely except one Failed to answer 2 questions regarding journal where my paper got published. Questions about my other extra curricular activities Answered Overall nice interview, all the questions were related to my profile
I wonder how many people would be willing to pay NM-Mumbai 10.5 lacs this week! Would you?Ā

Those who are appearing for CAP process and struggling to complete WAT in 20 min one tip from my side - They will issue the chits containing topic first and then will ask you to overturn it after 1 min and start writing. So try reading the topic from backside and as the letters are in bold its quite easy to do same. You might be able to get additional 40 seconds to think in this way. Todays topic was should voting made compulsory?

CAP interview experience.
Venue - A hotel at Rajendra place, Delhi (lobby was lit with some touring russian chicks)
Date - Ā 14th feb
Almost decided against going since I only wanna join Delhi/NCR cllgs due to certain personal reasons. However, dragged myself there for practise's sake.
WAT - Should voting be made mandatory - mentioned world being dangerous not due to evil men but the inaction of good ones. Distracted masses. Cited Huxley's work. Mentioned trends of low voter turnout in US and the lackluster one back home in Delhi. People condemning politicians about exercising political power while not exercising their own. Wrote mandatory voting will make the inactive types put some thought and effort (educate themselves) and participate politically. Educated people are empowered people so mandatory voting will empower people and better hold politician's feet to the fire etc etc.
PI experience : (interview got delayed too much so almost walked out but somehow managed to stick around, half-heartedly)
I was last in my panel. Two panelists. Both males. Let's call them Sir and Dork.
Sir - Tell me about yourself. Me - Typical stuff followed by hobbies like listening to synthwave music, mma enthusiast, reddit surfing, geopolitics.
Sir - (complete disinterest)
Dork - (not even bothering to lift his head, just going through my docs and holding his phone in his hand)
Sir - You have quite a few backlogs, why ? Me - something along the lines of electronics not turning out to be my cup of tea
Sir - what if same thing happens with mba? Me - explained difference in situations (interest and better introspection) and showcased acquired interest by mentioning certain books, bschool content, blogs etc
Dork - still sifting through my docs like he's trying to find the damn crystal skull. (browsing phone in other hand)
Sir - (out of the f*cking blue, instead of questioning the marketing concepts I mentioned, asks about GDP rate) - what's the current rate? Me - approximately 5%
Sir - sharp down curve since when? Me - since around 2012
Sir - why? Me - npa's, delays in power sector operations due to coal scam, il&fs, global factors - *interrupts*
Sir - what's npa? Me (nigga you serious) - non-performing assets. Sir - explain !!! Me - explained (trademarks)
Sir - how have npa's caused slowdown. Me - told. Sir - date of budget? Me - told.
Dork (he finally found the fountain of youth from within my docs so asked a ques....while playing with his ...) - what are the risks involved in subscribing to online outlets like youtube, reddit etc for learning subjects?
Me - risks are that one might end up with a very superficial understanding of concepts as the nature of the platform makes it quite difficult to explain complex concepts in a video or a post unlike something like a book. However, (he didn't ask me this but I assumed the dork was taking a jibe at some of the sources I cited) so told him that the benefit is that since youtube content and reddit info. is a lot more readily available, they serve as good initiation points for people to further explore their interests through books etc
Sir - I think we are done here (in a very smug manner). Me - (yeah, me too) - alright, thank you sir.
Shook their hand. the dork finally showed me his face.
Walked away. Came back to grab my pen. They said 'it's our pen'. I said nope. The dork realized theirs was lying on the floor. Walked away again.
They were drained, couldn't be bothered and were just out of it by the time my PI started. CAP interviews are like drunk teenagers. Don't take your personal take in the aftermath seriously. Focus on the upcoming calls and convert the living heavens out of them. Best wishes from the White house !!

WAT: What measures can you take to avoid the impact of the recession
GE1: A panel of 2, one M and one F (probably she was from IM). We were a group of 5 (1 from Finance, Marketing and Operations and 2 from IM)
M1: Introduce yourself in 1 to 1.5 minutesĀ
All the questions in the first round were around the intro. For me, most of the questions were on Work experience and Pharma Sector. A couple of questions on the difference in the patent regulation between Indian and US Pharma Sector
The Panelists were quite chill and didn't grill at all. 4 out of 5 of us were selected for GE2.
GE2: A Panel of 2, both M and we were a group of 6
M1: Introduce yourself but it should not include any of the details from the form or any info related to work or education.
Everyone gave a chilled bio that had a few life situations and mostly revolved around hobbies.
M1: Suppose your company has decided to trim the headcount of your team from 10 to 5. Which all qualities will you look before deciding on who to sack
Everyone chipped in with the answers.
M1: Suppose the 5 people you retained decided to quit as they got another offer. What will you do
M2: Mention some of the difficult situations you faced in your workplace and what did you do to resolve it
M2: If you can be someone else for a day. So who would you be and why
*Refrain from being Steve Jobs, Elon Musk or any cricketer or any other famous personality
M1: If there are a few things you would want to change in the SPJIMR. What would it be?Ā
