CAT 2012 Kerala study group

3) If p^2*q^3*r = (28/27) where p, q and r are positive real numbers, then find the minimum value of (p + q + r)?

a) 12 b)5 c)9 d)4 e) 3

4) If ||x – 2|–1|
a)26 b)13 c)-27 d)-26 e)-7

5) ABC is a three digit number such that ABC = 4 [AB + BC + CA], where AB, BC and CA are all two digit numbers. Find the total number of possible values for the number ABC.
a) 1 b) 2 c)3 d)0 e)More than 3

P.S :Wud love to know if ther are any shortcut methods other than trial & error after forming the eq. ?

Voila wht accuracy!! You're going gr8 guns !! Any tips for us mortals ?

@Kevin88 Is the answer to Max(2a+3b+6c+24d) , 250?
@rohan_bhasker : Yup Buddy.. post your approach for all !!

I just tried the first one buddy.That too i used the lagrange multiplier method (Engg Maths) to get the answer which is impractical 4 the actual cat coz it takes around 2-3 min

@Kevin88 Let me try the other ones :)
@Kevin88 X-2Y cant be -27.The value of X and Y works out to be in (-5,9) and (-10,12) respectively.
@rohan_bhasker
-27 is rt; post the steps on the lagrange multiplier method if possible !!

@Kevin88 Will post it 2moro with illustrations.I'm taking part in the marathon at 7pm.Hope u'll be there too :)
@Kevin88
Qn 1....no clue how to go ahead....waiting for rohan to post the soln tomorrow.

Qn 2...I denotes any Integer in the q??
If thats the case, let x and 2x be the roots....that is
2x^2= 1/(I-m) and 3x = -I/(I-m)
solving these two you will get
m= (9I-2I^2)/9
it is max at I=2. and m=10/9. its not even in the options.....
Where am i going wrong???

Qn 3... if X^m*Y^n = K, where m and n are positive integers minimum value of aX+bY is realized when (aX/m = bY/n)
I used this principle and cudn arrive at an answer provided in the options.....
Are you sure (28/27) is a correct figure.?

Qn 4...Ans is -27

Qn 5..Ans is 1???.....ABC = 792. =4(79+92+27)
I made an equation like 100x+10Y+Z = 44(X+Y+Z)
then i gave some random numbers and found 792 is fulfilling the criteria.. but im not sure any other combination do the same....Its safe to skip these kind of qstns unless someone else come up with a proper way of solving....
@raku1989 For question 3, even i think the value 28/7 is wrong.Because i got the value as 2x7^(1/6) which is not among the options

Ya......same here for qn 3.....2*7^(1/6)
What about Qn 2??

I don't know how to do that one 😞

@rohan_bhasker said: I don't know how to do that one
Check my soln once.....
@raku1989 @rohan_bhasker

Q1. Will wait for your detailed post rohan .

Q2. I will become max when I=9/4 & not 2. Ans: 9/8.

Q3. My bad.. its 2^8 not 28 !!!. Ans : 4

Q4. Ans is -27. Could you post the equation set up.

Q5. Ans is 1. Don't know how to solve it without trial & error

So I need not be an integer uh? Since nothing is mentioned about I in the Qn i thought we can assume that way....

Guys for Q4 : I'm getting the following equations :

Just tell me where i'm going wrong

-5 -3 -3
-7==> -10 -6
