Hello friends,

I could not find a thread which describes a career in International Business. Also could not find much info regarding what exactly is MBA(IB) all about. Did go through IIFT threads but still not much info because even if someone raised this issue it got dissolved among other admission related posts.

Friends lets get together and make ourselves clear about this. I will try to get some info from my end but it would be great if we could have some Division of Labour. And Yes seniors and professionals from IB courses can be of maximum help. So I would really appreciate if they help us.

Thanks in advance to all.

cheers

I had heard that IB is risky as it limits ur options but didn't know that the options will be so limited. I am sure there must be more to it. Seniors ur views. Thanks shilpa for ur valuable inputs.

well even i feel IB does not have such a limited scope. Atleast going by IIFT, they say that IB encompasses all aspects of industry with just a particular focus on IB i.e. perhaps globalization related aspects. So, people will have besides normal bread and butter knowledge, as an extra, a firm grasp of globalisation and its impacts on the industry.
I think that is the reason why at IIFT the companies lap up all MBA(IB) people and also with such diverse job profiles(though loaded more towards finance side). As i could see all major finance companies recruited from there, so i really dont think its merely meant for SCM.

IIFT placements functional breakup of the batch 2004-06 is given below which surely shows placements in all sectors. But then friends we need to remember that it is IIFT and not MBA(IB) in general. We need to realise what's in the world of MBA(IB) outside IIFT. What about other institutions. What kind of profiles r being offerred to MBA(IB) people from different colleges and what is the growth pattern of MBA(IB) graduates. "What is a career path of an MBA(IB) graduate. And yes the thing which haunts me all the time is that " Why people say that MBA(IB) is risky? " . And yes how is MBA(IB) different in different colleges course content wise as well.

Hi iwillmakeit,
As Far as I know, I went through the IIFT syllabus and compared it with other general management curricula. I found that the subjects are mostly the same, but there is a prefix 'International' attached to most of the subjects.
SO in my view the IIFT syllabus must be MBA (whatever specialization u choose) + IB.
Which translates to an International Perspective of Management?
I think we may be missing out on HR and OB, but the extra stream in IIFT's syllabus is Economic and Trade Policies and WTO related gyaan.
Hope this helps.
Vivekanand.

PS: Personal views!

Same here....I too applied for Kolkata as second option...But, i cant find any mails.......Anyways, i dont bother for such things....I am keeping my fingers crossed....

Hi,

If you are looking for a career in the international business, and you have been studying and staying in your original country for your entire life, this probably doesn't work.

International recruiters look at your resume to investigate and guess if you could survive and able to contribute well in the international business settings in their organizations. A Fortune 100 international companies typically requires candidates to have an international background, because candidates without will often find that it is difficult to integrate and work well with professionals and clients from other nationalities and culture.

Be it a work attachment, an exchange term, or an overseas study, try to immense yourself with an international environment to investigate if you are suitable in such an environment.

Kind regards,
Thomas

Hi,

I am Ameesh Arora, pursuing MBA from AIMA. I am intrested in doing my specialization in International Business. Since you are already doing MBA in IB therefore, would like to seek some help from you regarding the course content and future prospects of this course.

I would realy be thankful if you could guide me more about this course.

Thanks and Regards,
Ameesh

A few insights on International Business Specialization as I am student of IB. Major differences from the normal MBA course is that a lot of subjects and case studies are designed to analyze business scenarios ALSO from view points like

  1. Entry Strategy into foreign market
  2. Operations in foreign market
  3. Acculturization and localization
  4. International Political Environments
  5. Understanding of foreign consumers
  6. Foreign Taxation and Finance
  7. Logistics etc

You can observe a lot of cultural subjects like foreign languages to understand foreign culture which sometimes is absent in many managers working in cross cultural business environments.

A manager involved in international operations will also oversee export import hence study of import-export policies + SCM is also a part of curriculum.

International Economics to understand economical dynamics across the globe, Inorganic growth via M&A; is fast getting acceptance hence M&A; frms also finds its place in IB courses.

However, very few colleges in India are able to deliver what an International Business course needs to deliver. As correctly mentioned in the thread, an IB candidate is as much apt for any job profile as regular specialization student is.

Would be able to add much more once I complete my MBA.
