Hey people,

There is a seperate section on PG for GMAT, but the post-GMAT experience info is pretty scattered.

I personally believe the Essays + Interviews are far more important + influential + difficult than the GMAT. (Most people I see get too caught up in that one score, and fail to realise that the rest of the packet needs to be at par if not better than your GMAT)

So compile all the essay/letters of reco/interview info or experience you have over here. I have a selfish reason for doing this as well- have an interview lined up soon so I'm a bit nervous, and need more resources to prepare.

In any case, I'll kick things off:

Help for i'views:
I have never gone through an interview with a US B-School, so I don't know what to expect. I'm usually quite confident at interviews- aced all my job interviews so far, had great MICA, IMT-N interviews (Had HORRIBLE TAPMI/NMIMS interviews); so my nervousness is primarily because I feel I don't know my Target Audience too well. I am more comfortable when I know who I am speaking to and what kind of people they are.

Help for Essays:
I need to know how best to explain a career switch. People tell me it's illogical to switch careers the way I have, but the fact is my future interests and my current occupation don't match.

This is how I've moved:
Undergrad Degree: Bachelor's in Management (Spz: Marketing)
Undergrad Part Time Jobs: Sales, Freelance Web/Graphic Design, I.T. Support
Work Ex:
9 Months with design agency as a trainee
6 Months with a top-3 ad agency as a trainee (client servicing)
14 Months again with original design agency as a web/graphic designer (current job)

I want to do an MBA because I want to get into Technology and Web Marketing; with a strong base in branding + consumerism. I believe an MBA from a US B-School will give me the academic grounding + exposure to consumer marketing, and also the access to people whose experience in these fields I could learn from.

My worry is explaining this shift in interest from my current occupation (design). I'm pretty much stumped as to what to say/write. Any advice?

Anyway, if you've had an interview already (telephonic or in person), please share your experiences. Also, if you've written your essays, share the thought process and organization that you put in to complete them.

Personally, I'd rather not hire one of those consultants, because I can't afford to shit that much money, and I personally believe I'll do a better job myself.

All the best peeps!

A seperate thread for GMAT. This is good 😃

@nonedone
awesome material links da!!
Thanks!!

Hi None,

I have compiled a word document for the other thread in this forum (PGPX 2007 - Interviews and Beyond), not sure how important it will be in this thread. It has past year questions from the actual interviews of IIM-A and IIM-C exective MBA programs, plus other general questions compiled off the web.

I'll be giving my IIM-A (PGPX) interview in 10 days at Newark, USA. The book by Richard Montauk has been a great help till now.
All the best to you.

Hello 'nonedone'. Great that you started the thread.
Essays can be very time consuming, if you have not thought about the layout beforehand.
I suggest you to start with a broad self-understanding. What you have learned/done till date (Background, Education, Work, interests etc) and based on them what do you plan to do (goals) and how does an MBA fit there.
Once you do it, you will find that most of the things in essays can be easily answered with conviction.
My siggestions are:
1. Do your homework about yourself.
2. Write your OWN essays, that means no topos. External help in making them near perfect is okay, but be careful, because the schools have records about your general style (in form of your mails, calls etc...) so please try to stick to your original self.
3. Remember that you should be satisfied with your essays.. dont second guess. Just try to be yourself. The Admission Committe rewards for being original and unique.

Interviews:
A general interview can be 30-40 minutes. Unfortunately, till date all my interviews went beyond an hour. But length is definitely not an indicator of a successful interview. Thats where the content comes into being.
It is advisable to read your essays and resume before you go for an interview.
The interviews can be in an a formal ambience of an informal ambience (hotel, coffee-shop etc). For formal types, yes, you will wear a business suit. But for formal types, you can be a bit easier, but still try to show that you care and mean business. So, jeans and Tees are strict no-no.
Now the questions:
1. Tell me about yourself/personal history/background...
2. Tell me about your work.
3. Career Progression
4. Your Goals (long term / short term)
5. Why MBA
6. Why now
7. Why xyz school
8. what do you understand by Leadership; what is your leadership style
9. what are you passionate about
10. why shall i take you
11. what wil you do if your are not selected in ANY school?
12. they can ask about personal/professional achievements. Why do you see as the biggest achievement.
13. what do you think about working in team.
14. did your team fail?
15. did you face team's disagreement? what did you do? what will you do had that not been successful.
16. any questions?

that is a general kind of discussion.. an can fairly last for 40 minutes, if ofcourse, you are positively participating.

I hope that helps.
Bye
