Hey Puys,
Here's my dilemma

First my profile

1. Acads ( x -93% X11- 94.5% b.tech (EEE)- CGPA 7.14)
2. Work experience of 1.5 years in a leading switch gear manufacturing company
Responsible for marketing and sales team , met deadlines and improved sale of a product by 200%

3. Currently pursuing M.tech at IIT Bombay ( in an off beat branch "Technology and Development") deals with socio technical aspects but the placements are not great atall.

4.Extra curricular -decent

My dilemma-
Should I finish my degree at IITB and apply for an MBA? will an off beat branch add any credit to my application? the branch deals with uplifttment in rural areas and working with NGO's

Or should I give GATE again and aim for PSU's /join some other job and gain 2 more years of experience before I apply?

Please suggest

my GMAT score -720

Hi,

Following is my Profile:

GMAT Score :660

TOEFL Score:103

Work Expereince :3.2 with IT Company

Graduation :80.5%

12th :81.2%

10th :84.2%

Extra curicullar activites: Mainly participated in them during school and college days.

Done Certificate Course in French.

Please let me know some good B Schools in USA and Canada considering my profile.

Hi, I may be putting this query in wrong section because my query is not entirely related to GMAT scope of things. I am applying to a BSchool in India, SOIL gurgaon, which is not recognized by AICTE and also not accredited with any good governing body as per my knowledge but I heard very good reviews about this Bschool which are at par with some of the good bschools like greatlakes and also it fits into my scope of things like MBA in one year. I got not very good gmat score of 670 and applying to this school along with others. my question is, Shoul I seriously give it a shot or recognition of bschool is important? Please guide me

Hello,Just wanted to check my chances on the board for the top-5 US schools.Work: Working for one of the largest global PE firms in their India office after spending two years in Investment Banking (M&A; at a top-tier bank Undergrad: SRCC Delhi, Lead Debating, Social Service Placement Council, College Festival; Good ECA record in debating/leadership rolesSocial Service: Worked on pro-bono projects for Ministry of Social Justice, Helped a friend start a socially relevant business etc.Problem Area: Low undergrad scores, specially in quant subjectsPotential Solutions Suggested: High GMAT scores; Add on math courses etc.Strategy Question: Should I delay my app from 2013 fall to 2014 fall in order to take up something quant heavy in order to ensure an admit? Thanks

Hi,

Taking up 'something quant heavy' will not ensure your admit, though it will improve your chances for getting accepted. As I understand, your work must be involving substantial quantitative aspects. However, if you feel you can get better opportunities at work within the next one year, then you should wait to apply with a stronger application.

Think of it as a must for yourself to score 730+ on the GMAT if you are looking at the top b-schools. An excellent quant score will help for sure.

In terms of your strategy to apply this year (for fall 2013 admissions) - I think you are pretty late in the process if you are only just contemplating the GMAT.

I am not aware of the schedule you keep at work, but try taking time out to get involved in the community around you. Having leadership stories from outside work would be a definite boost on your candidacy.

GMAT €“ 690 €“ Q48 V37Goal: To Switch from IT to ConsultingI have the following questions1.Please evaluate my profile for UT Austin, Indiana Kelly, Emory, Kenan Flagler, USC Marshall.

It boils down to how well you can connect your goals with what the b-school has to offer. Find out for each of these programs, what are the features that would help in your career advancement and use this information to write informed and personalized essays. So, in effect, one master copy of the career goals essay will not do for every b-school.

So dare2try, you have a lot of research to do in the next few days. Try talking to people in these programs and ask them about specific question that will help you to build on your "why X school" essay. Most applicants underestimate the importance of this first-hand research, leading to a ding.

@dare2try said:
2.What are my chances of scholarship at the schools mentioned above?
Hard to say.

@dare2try said:
3.What are the other schools I should try?

I would suggest that you add 1-2 b-schools like Mendoza-Notre Dame or Rice Jones, which are lower down the rankings - purely for the purpose of casting a wider net. Tonnes of Indian apply to any of the top 50 US b-schools, so I believe competition is tough everywhere.
@dare2try said:
4.If I improve my GMAT score in April/May, will these schools consider that for scholarship (after admission offer is made)?
I believe the GMAT score is one among the many considerations for awarding scholarships, the others being a good undergrad score, overall development and leadership traits. So, I am not sure how much this would help you, its best to check the concerned b-school's policy for receiving updates after application submission.

Infact, remember to ask this to the students that you reach out to .

Hi Namita....i have got an admit offer from CEIBS with attractive scholarship.I had targeted B-schools in A-PAC region and yet to hear from other B-schools(ISB,NUS,NTU).Though CEIBS caters to my needs esp. with a scholarship which would keep the cost factor same for me with comparison to other schools,i am not very much convinced about its brand value outside mainland china.I would like hear your take which can help me make up my mind.

Hi,

I'm a 30 year old Chartered Accountant from India. I have over 7 years of work experience, 3 years in Ernst & Young India, 4 years in a Multinational Oil & Gas Company in Dubai. Now my dilemma, I got admits to three colleges, not sure which one to choose-

1) Simon Rochester, USA (1 year program) - Reputed school in USA, strong in finance, but seems to have poor recruitments due to no big recruiter in the region. Some say the location is a let-down, very cold climate.

2) IE, Spain - Highly ranked, but hear lot of online horror stories of most of the alumni being unemployed. Many say the school is overrated. Does the school have the reputation among recruiters or is the ranking just a marketing gimmick.

3) Cranfield, UK - Low profile, but seems to have good alumni and a strong program. But UK is in bad shape.

Post MBA I'm thinking of staying in USA or Europe for a few years before coming back to Middle East for work. I'm also in the process of earning my US CPA certification. Any advise would be helpful in getting me out of this confusion!!

Regards,

Can anybody please reply or show me the way of right thread to post this query.. I can't put this in SOIL's own thread because there I can get biased reviews. Please reply.
Hi,

CGPA - 6.69/10 in Mech. Eng. from BITS Dubai
School - X - 82% XII - 82%

Rochester is 5-6 hours drive away from NY- the finance capital! I believe you have career aspirations in the finance industry, where as you have already researched, Simon has a stronghold.

So this is a no-brainer for me - Simon is the b-school for me. Let me be more explicit:
1. You are getting a US based certification, and intend working in the US. The other 2 choices are not in US.
2. a 5 hour drive to NY means you can travel the weekends to NY and network your way to your desired jobs, or create opportunities for yourself. So the region for you is not Rochester but NY state.
3. Unless you absolutely abhor the cold, you will get by! I can say this from my personal experience.
4. Like you have mentioned, Simon is best known for finance, so you would be moving in the right circles during and after the MBA (Alumni network).

Hope that helps :)

Hi Namitha, I had written to you before
But my specific doubts were left unanswered.
Below I'll describe you guys my profile. And I want two answers from you.

Hi, This is sandeep, looking forward to take GMAT this year. I'm a bit confused and therefore not able to concentrate on my studies. Reason for my confusion or dilemma is because of my average acads (X-58%, XII-65%, Graduation - 65% and Post Graduation - 71%). With these acads would i be able to make to the IIM'S or the ISB'S. I am a working professional having an experience of 6+ years in IT industry. Puys ! really need some guidance here.

@mba-help : Namita, done with ISB i/v 2 days back and i am very hopeful of an admit offer from them.I dropped the idea of applying to NUS and NTU and it boils down to ISB vs. CEIBS for me.The problem is that i need to make commit at CEIBS in two weeks from now and ISB doles out decision only on 15th feb. Please let me know what's your opinion, particularly on CEIBS?
@prash264

Hi, I remember answering your email in detail on PM & in your new query, I can see just one question :), so let me answer that for you :

Your current work experience is very less in number of years, which you will make up for if you apply next year end. If you continue to do innovative work and make impact -both within your day-job organization and outside it, then you should be in good standing to apply to the top b-schools.

Clarity on career goals matters a lot, so you should be clear about your goals when you begin to write down your application next year.

& the bonus answers:

I would not consider your GPA as a big deterrent if the rest of your profile (GMAT and work experience) is very strong. Maybe you could retake the GMAT and bring your score up by 20-30 points - and you have enough time to do so until next year.

I would also not get too bothered about working with smaller companies. Like you have mentioned, the quality of your work can be fantastic within these companies- you could have got more opportunities to take initiatives and make bigger impact. So put your achievements in the right perspective at the time of applying, and you will still stand a chance.

Crack it with the GMAT! score a 730+ . Your GPA is among the many factors considered in the application.

With 6 years of work experience, let the work exp. do the talking

I think CEIBS will offer you a lot of opportunities if you want to work in mainland China. If you want a career in South Asian Countries, not particularly in China, then I believe NUS/NTU will offer you better choices.

Also Singapore is more international compared to China, so you may have better innings being in Singapore - but this depends on whether your career goals are location dependent.

I would suggest that if you are sure to take up CEIBS if you do not make it to ISB, then its alright. If not, then you should apply to NUS / NTU and keep more options open for yourself.
