Ask a Consultant! - GMAT/GRE Only

@anshul8484 plz suggest the colleges that i should target!!!

Hi,

I would like to join an MBA program in 2013. I have applied to ISB and am also planning to apply to universities like NUS and Nanyang. I am considering to apply to Texas A&M; Mays, Kelleys, and also to top 10 FT rankers like Sloan, HBS, Wharton, Judge of Cambridge Univ, LBS etc. but i am little doubtful whether my profile and my preferences suit these schools.
Can you please evaluate my profile and suggest me the best colleges I can apply.

My MBA preferences:
specialization: Operations and management Consulting
Geography : Any top School in US, UK, India or Singapore
Main Point: The huge costs of doing an MBA means I definitely need financial assistance like scholarship and GA. I also want to get the best ROI from my MBA. I prefer a high quality MBA, but getting it at a low cost is a nice option for me.

Below is my profile:
Acads:
10th - 95% (school topper)
12th - 91% (Distinction)
UG - B.Tech - Information Technology - 83% (Distinction), Anna university Chennai

Work Experience:
Years of Experience: 2.75 Years (by Mar 31, 2013)
Industry : IT - Consulting (Cognizant)
Function: quality control
Designation : Product analyst - Testing
Responsibilities:
Lead 2 teams - involved in Project Planning, Resource management
Conduct trainings, meetings, interviews, team building activities

GMAT: 700 (Q50, V35, AWA 4.5, IR 6)

Professional Certifications : 5

Awards: 5 Awards ( including IBM champion Awards - 2010, 2011)

Extra-curricular Activities:
Mentor of an Internal marketing group in my company
Executive Member of a Team Building Committee in my company
IBM DB2 student Ambassador in College
General secretary of Student Association in College
Joint secretary of Association of information Technologists at College
Co-authored a book on .NET for IBM

You have not mentioned much about your profile here. As an MBA is a professional degree your 29 months at work will matter a lot and in some way can mitigate the low GPA scores if your work related experiences are impressive.

You will need to take the GMAT if you are applying abroad because those b-schools will not accept CAT - an Indian test. There are some lower runged b-schools that do not require a GMAT score, so it will be wise to check the FAQ sections of these b-schools to understand whether you need to take the test.

2. In general, schools that require the GMAT are more prestigious than the ones that don't. Since you are keen on going to a good b-school, this is something you can keep in mind.

4. I suggest you to do your own research about the programs, including these ones. Log on to their websites, read up about the academics and other learning opportunities outside the class. Find out about the financial support and about the career services. And the best way to go about this is to talk to current students or recent alumni and understand the jump your career can get by attending at their school. You can check out a few rankings on:
FT.com
Businessweek.com

to get a quick perspective on various MBA programs.

what are your career goals? Do they get fulfilled after doing an MS or an MBA? If you want to specialize in a particular field, then an MS is the choice. But if you are looking at enhancing your business perspective, or feel undecided about the function/ industry you would finally join, then an MBA will help you more.

I would not suggest you to do a degree because its perceived cost looks lesser at this point in time. This is going to be a long term investment so do not think of a short term advantage (if there is any?).

I would need to know more about you to make any b-school suggestions. You may also consider waiting another year and then applying with a stronger profile, and to a well ranked b-school (though you can still do this, especially if you had got good growth opportunities at work) . Two years of work experience in a US b-school will mostly place you among the youngest in class.

Loans- each b-school varies on this. Some need a co-signer, some do not. A better way out is to take the maximum part of your loan with an Indian lender like Credilla.

Feel free to reach out for further help :)

@mba-help Thanks for your kind advise...
I have few doubts...
1) Can i get a good B school if i secure good score in GMAT as my profile is extremely poor??
2) I have an average work profile in my work place since it is a nationalize semi govt. sector ,it has got very little extraordinary opportunity.
3) Can you advise something about Canada MBA as per my profile..?? Can i get good B School in Canada without GMAT?
Sharing my profile once again for your reference..

@jeshlive

Hi, Sorry for the late response. You have very nice co-curricular activities, and my top most advice is to present them in a comprehensive way rather than them sounding like a big ball of unrelated stuff - this is what a lot of applicants do, and fail to create the intended impression.

About your work experience - its definitely on the lower side for the b-schools on your list. These are some of the most competitive programs there can be - so there has to be something great about you for them to consider you. Can you pull out some work related instances of leading teams and making an impact? Talk about the specific skills required ( and about your excelling in them) for project planning, resource management, mentoring etc. etc. and give relevant examples to back up your claims.

About your intended specialization- this has to be aligned with your career goals.

About the costs- the top ranked programs are more expensive than the lower ranked ones. But the post MBA salaries can also be lower - so, don't look just look at the costs. Think of the longer term benefits a b-school name will reap for you.

@mba-help read this...no college is stated...niether the required gmat scores..or the kind of courses offered
@medhashree no I havent, i am currently working in IT
www.iitb.ac.in/academic/rsrchp...

Research Programmes at IITB offer PhD in Humanities and also Industrial Engineering & Operations apart from traditional subjects like Physics.
I am interested in pursuing a PhD in one of the above fields.
I am an Engineering student working in IT for past 3 years.
So,
1. Am I eligible with B.tech degree, no GATE score?
2. What are my chances considering I have no research to show except my final year engineering project.
3. enough time to prepare for entrance test? especially since I have been out of touch with academic subjects for past 3 years.
4. Where can i get sample test papers and study material for the above subjects?
5. How difficult is it to get admitted for PhD programs at IITs?
Thanks in advance!
Hi - Need serious advise...

I am in dilemma regarding a decision I need to make regarding application to McCombs school of Business.
I had applied to McCombs last year in the 2nd round with 3 years work-ex, 690 GMAT and average essays but did not get a call. I was planning to rewrite my GMAT next week and then re-apply to Mccombs in the 1st round. But from the mock test results, I feel that am really not prepared yet for re-writing GMAT.
The First round deadline for Mccombs is 16th Oct, and I think I will have to reschedule my GMAT after that now.
I have two choices now:
A. I re-apply with the same GMAT(690). I will have increased work-ex (4 years), better essays, and 1st round as enhancements over last year application
B. I wait for the 2nd round till december and increase my GMAT and then re-apply
I am not able to decide between A and B. I feel that by applying in 2nd round I will be losing in terms of chances as 1st round is always advantageous. But then I will have to apply with the old gmat if I apply in 1st round.
Kindly advise!!
Here is my full profile:
Female
Country: India
GMAT: 690
Undergraduate Degree: BTech in Computer Science
Percentage of Marks in Undergraduate Degree: 80.24%
Work Experience: 4 years in Information Technology
No international experience
Quiet Good earlier academics
Good extra-curricular
@mba-help Thanks for your advice

If you are a re-applicant, the admissions team would like to see you better on all fronts, including on GMAT. I would suggest you to defer your application to round 2 and retake the GMAT before that.

The fact that you are re-applying to a b-school means that you are really interested in getting in. So do not leave any stones unturned and put in your best effort in acing GMAT and the application subsequently.

you will not lose on any chances if you apply Round 2. If you get a better GMAT score, you will only make your candidacy better.

I have done reject analysis all of this summer. Though this is a busy period, if you are interested, I can have a look at your last year's application and point out pitfalls. You can PM me if interested.

seeing is believing : read through the reject analysis thread.
