Ask a Consultant! - GMAT/GRE Only

Hi all, I'm from IT background and completed my engg. I gave Gre AND SCORED 310/340. I applied in 11 universities for MS in MIS. Florida international university (which generally asks for GMAT for MIS) gave me GMAT waive. But the course duration is 1 year, unlike other MS MIS programs in other universities. So my question is, is this one year course good ? Will I get to work there for 2.5-3 years like other MS people get (OPD) ? What would be the duration of Visa i would be getting ? Thanks in Advance.

Hi Namita.....Thanks for your feedback and kind words. One reason for choosing an MBA at this stage is I feel my opportunities are/will kind of stagnant and the next level of roles/opportunities require an MBA from a Top B school. My post MBA plans also feature India/Asia(SGP/HK) to a fairly large extent. I have a strong CA/CMA backing and an MBA will just add a catalyst to push my career further ahead. Also the peer group and alumnus of top schools are way way ahead in in terms of cooperation, interaction as compared to CA/CMA.

Do you think with my score, background and I have any chances at the schools i mentioned? Thanks for your help.

Hi,

What do u suggest? should i focus on my job in IT and build better profile there. or focus more on my business and try to learn and gain more experience in that.

My advice to you is to not live your life based on what will look good on the application, but based on what excites you or where your passion lies. Once you have better clarity on this, you would know which direction to steer your career in

GMAT score: 690 (second attempt in 2011, first was 640 back in '06)
Citizenship: Indian
Age: 29
Education: Bachelors in Engineering (IT) from Thadomal Shahani, Mumbai University
Marital status: Single
Work Experience: 8+ years
Employment: Working for one of the top 3 ITes companies in India and have been with them all my professional life
Overseas exposure: Has spent 4.5 years in the US working for a NA bank under domains such as Commercial and Home Equity.
I gave my second attempt at GMAT in Oct last year when I was in the US. After that I had to come back to India and didnt get time to neither apply nor for TOEEFL. I had almost given up on applying this year, but have decided to give it a try. At my age, I still want to go for a full time MBA and preferably in the US. I am now open to other options such as Europe or Canada. Most of the US schools which I had preferred, have already past or are very close to their application deadlines - Berkeley, Duke. My purpose for an MBA is to propel myself into the IT consulting scene. With 8+ years in IT in both programming and testing world, I wish to remain in this same field. I believe an mba from a good college will help me reach there.
I would love to have your advice on the following:
1) I havent done research on European/Australian/Canadian/Asian colleges for mba that are renowned for IT consulting/branding strategy. Can you please suggest some, that can be applied to within next month or two?
2) Any good US colleges that I can apply to in next month or so? As of now, I am only looking at UCLA and Darden. Not necessarily known for IT but those are the only ones (in US from the top 30 or so) where I can apply this year without TOEEFL and that too if I get my act together!
3) How can I bank on my US experience (4.5 years) while applying to colleges?
4) I had visited an open house held by UC Davis @ San Francisco in Nov'11. They had an executive mba, but, they werent sure if I could continue in exec mba even if I lose my job (expiry of work visa). Do you know if I can continue with an executive mba in US even if I lose job during the process? Alternatively, can I apply for exec mba courses in US when I am working in India, thus effectively been a jobless student in US if I am enrolled?
5) Finally, which are the top Indian b-schools that you would recommend to me? Ones that accept GMAT scores and ones that suit my profile (work exp, future goal, etc..)

Indiana Jones, Even if some of the US b-schools of your interest have their deadlines coming up, its too late to apply now. Round 3 is very selective and with a common applicant profile ( Indian, IT, male and average GMAT score) your chances to crack it now would be very tough.

Secondly, applying to b-schools is no less than a strategy in itself - where you have done your extensive b-school research and work with a plan. Applying to random b-schools in the next 1-2 months is not the best way to do it. I would suggest that you start early this year and approach the applications for fall this year in a structured way.

You can still consider the European b-school programs as most accept applications at this time of the year also.

IT Consulting/ Branding strategy?? these are two different functions altogether - consulting and marketing. You can't mix them up.

How can I bank on my US experience (4.5 years) while applying to colleges?

You can show your international outlook in the essays and through the recommendations

You require the support of your employer for an exec MBA. People do this course because they want to keep working while studying, so I don't know how it will work for you if you are jobless (but that sounds like too much of a speculation!) .
Finally, which are the top Indian b-schools that you would recommend to me? Ones that accept GMAT scores and ones that suit my profile (work exp, future goal, etc..)

You can check ISB/IIM (executive education) - depends on how strong an application you are able to put forth.

Hi Namita @ MBA Decoder and other MBA Gurus,I have few queries based on profile
graduate male engineer(electronics and communication)

i would like to go for MBA in consulting mgmt and would like to know your vuews comments suggestions opinions and any tips how to make a strong SOP would like to know from you.

Cognizant 81, you have switched careers so many time already (with another desired career change to management consulting), that I would advise you two things:

1. Get understanding of what you really want to do, going forward. While changing industries may have been easy for you until now, it may not be so in the future, and management consulting is not easy to break into. Also, you would not want to be in a situation where you don't like the consulting industry and start to crave a switch again.

2. When you start to write down your essays / SoPs, you should articulate your reasons/ motivations behind every change, so that the readers (adcom) are able to see a logical thought process for them. Basically, your career progression and goals essays must be very strong.

All the best,

Could you pls suggest good coaching classes for GMAT in Mumbai

Princeton is a good option. i have a couple of friends who took their course and scored more than 650. Then there are other options too like IMS and ******** which you can check out. My personal suggestion is to avoid IMS as the batches are crowded and they are not a out-and-out GMAT prep institute:(. Knewton and Veritas are also quiet good otions.

Hi Namita,

I am having 6 yrs of experience in software industry. I am also a GMAT 2012 aspirant from DELHI but i need your input in profile evaluation because this is a big concern for me:

10th:68%
12th:69%
B.Sc:69% (Distance learning program from Sikkim manipal university)
MCA:68% (Distance learning program from Sikkim manipal university)

At that time i didn't understand the impact of Distance courses so I did it but now paying for it and now it can't be corrected becz it's past. My concern is my distance courses will be considered by Indian as well as overseas colleges or not???Specially in US because there minimum requirement is 16Yrs of regular study. Will it also impact my placement because some of the IT giants don't consider distance courses such as TCS, Infosys, Wipro, CTS, Amdocs, Accenture..... and so many?

Please reply because nowhere i am getting clarification on it...

Thanks,
Abhishek

Hi Abhishek,

Most of the top colleges ask for a full-time graduation both in India as well as abroad. But considering you have around 6 years of experience in the software domain your case is much better. But still you need to be judicious and try to find out universities which accept students who donot have a full-time graduation. For this you need to go and see a education counsellor. Do not be disheartened there is always a way to get around each problem and you just need to find it.

All the best!

Cheers

Let me just jot down what comes to my mind at this point:

1) You will need to do more justice to your profile than what you have written. As far as I see it is a tough shot at Ivy League.

2) Unlike in India, in the US the GMAT is just a parameter. Get above 700+ and we get started talking. Less than that there is no point even discussing. So don't think things are going to change too much over there.

3) There are some great non-Ivy League schools as well. I would suggest you think about them as well. As long as your post-MBA goals are met, there should be no reason not to go there.

4) Apart from GMAT, also try to focus on what schools look for, and try to market yourself there. I think it is self-marketing - like an image consultant for the celebs. You may or maynot have it but how you show it goes a long way

Hello,

I have 4.5years of IT experience and currently working for an US MNC in Chennai. Yesterday i had a chat with one of my friend. He has completed XLRI-GMP program. He was having 14+ of work exp. He had suggested me to go for GMAT since people who get into IIM (for the 2 year course) have less than 3years of work exp. I never though beyond CAT all these 4years.
10th - AngloIndian BOard - 84.8%
12th - StateBoard TamilNadu - 83%
B.E - - Private College under Anna University Chennai - 73%
Extra-Curricular - ToastMasters InternationaL..

I am planning to take GMAT by May-2012. I am bit concerned about the fees if i do my MBA outside India. I am targetting for Singapore B Schools.

Could you tell me how far are my chances for this year admit. (yet to take GMAT) And what are other B Schools in India should i concentrate. (1 Year Program)

Thanks for your reply.

I am an electronics and telecommunication engineer with a first class with distinction(71.4%) from pune univ. I have average EC ( State level tt and swimming, positions at national level olympiads and competitions during school. However not so good ec's during college.). Currently i have 1 yr of experience in design and development of manufacturing automation systems at Tata Motors including projects in automobile manufacturing assembly lines and some niche control system applications. I would like to pursue an operation management specialization in mba. Some of the schools i have heard about having a good ops background and am willing to go for are Tepper, Ross and i am also interested in Cornell MBA program.
I am new to this forum could you please help me regarding the following:-
1) Work Exp:- what should my exp at the time of applying to schools in the us?
2) Giving Gmat:- when should i give Gmat? since the score is valid till 5 years. However i have heard that univs require fresh scores.
3) Universities:- Some other univs (even outside us) apart from above mentioned..
Thanks in advance....

Hello Consultants.
I am Ramya, currently no work experience.I am planning to apply for an MBA after I complete my MS.I am applying for MS as of now.MS in CS.
Primary reasons why I am doing MS is:
1.I dont want to work in the IT sector now though I am placed in TCS.I am looking for something more narrow or related.
2.I have been a bad student in my undergrad.I am with a consistent 65% without backlogs but I was not motivated throughout the course. So I dont have a strong profile.
3.By doing MS I plan to work hard right from the start and complete with a really good grade and render to my profile so as to pave my way for the top Bschools.

Having said that,
I want to finish with an MBA later,I am hellbent on doing both MS and MBA.I d like to know the right time to give my GMAT,now that I have a few months at hand, from march to june and I am majorly jobless so I can start the prep.
2.I am also skeptical about my GMAT essay as people who ll be writing GMAT with me might have work experience and mostly a differnet age group and hence might have more maturity, lucidity and other factors in their essay.
(But I can work towards it right?)
3.Can anyone please throw light on social entrepreneurship specialization?Like what is a social entrepreneur supposed to do exactly.
4.Will my undergraduate GPA and all that still be damaging and impacting on my profile if I ll apply for my MBA after my MS?
