Now comes the saddest part : GMAT: 630 :banghead:
Took the test in November 2011. My hopes of making it to B schools ended π
However, few days back applied to SP Jain GMBA and have a call for interview on Mar 4th. This made me sit up and think that maybe I could have given a shot to other schools. Please advise if there are any schools which I can aim with this gmat score. Also, if i get through SP Jain, would it be a right fit for me?
Thanks in advance!

Khilkhil,
My understanding of MBA programs is that any program which has 630 in the middle 80% is fair game for you. I would imagine this may exclude the top 20 or so programs.
The way I see it, there are two options:
1. Retake the GMAT and aim to get a higher score (Recommended)
2. Do not retake the GMAT but put in higher effort in your essays in order to differentiate yourself. This, in my opinion, would be a riskier strategy as you have mentioned your college score is not super high also so in general, schools will be concerned about your academic abilities.
All the best!

Hi Sudhir,
Firstly, congratulations on your academic and professional accomplishments. Two thoughts come to mind in response to your note:
1) With most coveted professional qualifications in finance and accounting coupled with an excellent experience in Investment Banking, everything seems to be going good for you. Why take a break from it all to do an MBA? What do you expect to achieve? At this point in your career, a degree alone will not help. Need a better understanding of this.
2) A regular MBA course will not be a good fit for you. Most of your peers will be fairly junior to you and so you will not find the same level of depth and maturity of thinking and the leadership experiences in your interaction with them. Either an Exec MBA or better still a Sloan program (only at LBS, MIT, Stanford) where they value your experience and demonstrated capabilities rather than the GMAT score may make better sense for you.
hpe that helps

ankit0411 SaysI took CAT this year and bombed heavily just like a flop movie at the box office.
Bollwood Movie buff, eh?
I am desperate to do an MBA and the options I have this year will be the colleges ranking around late thirties.Desperation can cloud your logic and planning. So when you are in that state of mind, don't take any important decisions.
I need to score really well in GMAT but after my CAT and every other result I really can't gather the motivation to start up all over again. The GMAT and CAT are two independent tests. I've known CAT crackers who've fared badly on the GMAT, and vice versa. So de-link the two, take a breather, change the mindset...and then jump back in.

hey,
i wanted to know if one has a chance of getting into a good university in the UK after 1 year of experience. or are they firm with their "3 years" requirement? can an excellent GMAT score compensate for the lack of experience? also which universities are best for applicants with less experience and more GMAT score, in the UK.
response would be highly appreciated.
thanks

If you are looking at a full time, UK based MBA program, a mimimum of 2-3 years work experience would definately be desirable even if its not a requirement.
Typically, if you want to do an MBA with 0-1 year experience, you could look our for Masters in Management programs, which are designed for early career candidates.
can an excellent GMAT score compensate for the lack of experience? also which universities are best for applicants with less experience and more GMAT score, in the UK.
A good GMAT score is more important for candidates who have come out of college recently, as opposed to those who have been in the workforce for a longer time. I am not sure it will "compensate" your lack of work experience.
A lot of times, the admissions teams want to see your leadership experiences/ potential in the workplace or outside it. So there is a possibility that you talk about extracurricular activities where you made a impact if you do not have many work examples to talk about.
Hope that helps.

Hi,
I am a ISB 2013 Reject (27 yrs Male,5.5 yrs IT exp,GMAT 740) and i want to re-apply this year to all the premier 1 yr Exec MBA programs in India including ISB (Missed some deadlines last year due to a late GMAT)
The situation is that i have a valid US Visa on hand and my company is ready to send me asap if i am willing to go,however i'm in a dilemma whether to stay back in India and apply in person or travel abroad and handle the applications from there.
I am confused because i am not sure if IIMs,XLRI-GMP and SP Jain entertain telephone/skype interviews. Please let me know how easy or how hard it would be to manage the application process to the above mentioned programs from abroad.
I have to take a decision soon, please chip in with some advice

Hi, I think that you should go and apply from there. It will give a better exposure to the industry and also the quick bucks! π On a feasibility aspect, I think it is feasible, couple of my friends did went for an onsite and applied from there. Studying for GMAT can get tough when you are at onsite but applications can happen. I know an ISB alum, who aftr ISB craves for interational experience adn struggling to find a right exposure. So in my opinion go ahead, exec MBA can happen anytime when you will find the need. No desperations!
All the best!

Hi, You hold a decent profile. Rice University is a very good school for energy. However what I wonder is why not do an exec MBA and come back to the PSU and grow in role. You are married and want work life balance which a consulting firm wont give.
PS: I am not an expert

Thanks for the quick response, i have worked in the US before but came back (with still 2 yrs left for visa expiry
)because i badly wanted to get into a B-school but was not able to study for GMAT working there.so i came back to India and managed a good score (740,50Q,41V),however by that time i missed all the deadlines except for ISB and XLRI-GMP.Got a reject at ISB
and now waiting for the XLRI-GMP interview. If i make it to XLRI,nothing better than that, but if not,i have to choose between going onsite again or staying back. I know that a onsite stint will always boost my profile but then i am worried that applying from there would be difficult, but as you say it may not be so tough after all, just that i dont want to miss the boat this time, ive been waiting from a long time.
Hi,
Can you please tell me whether it is good to do a MBA programme at MISB Bocconi. which is a initiative of SDA Bocconi, Italy.
Whether course is likely to be on par with top indian institutes.
Your suggestions are welcome.

Hi! I am currently doing B.Tech and would like to get a few basic information regarding exams for MBA programs abroad.
1. Is work experience a must in order to join top b-schools abroad?
2. What exams should I prepare for this? GRE, GMAT or any other?
3. Was thinking of starting to prepare for the GRE so will not be able to give my 100% to my B.Tech. Is this fine? How important % of graduation is while admission for MBA?? or should I only focus on engineering and prepare for GRE later?
Thanks
Hi! I am currently doing B.Tech and would like to get a few basic information regarding exams for MBA programs abroad.
Thread says "Ask a Consultant". I'm not a Consultant. However, do have some answers for you below.
1. Is work experience a must in order to join top b-schools abroad?
Not a must, but the % of students admitted to top programs with little or no work experience is probably of the order of 1% (sometimes, even less).
2. What exams should I prepare for this? GRE, GMAT or any other?
Generally speaking, GMAT is the way to go - at least for U.S. schools. A few top U.S. B schools have also started accepting the GRE in lieu of the GMAT. You may also need TOEFL.
3. Was thinking of starting to prepare for the GRE so will not be able to give my 100% to my B.Tech. Is this fine? How important % of graduation is while admission for MBA?? or should I only focus on engineering and prepare for GRE later?
Thanks
Transcripts and performance in undergrad do matter, but so does the test score. So, the answer to this question depends on your own ability (and circumstances) to multitask.
