Just some tips since most of the GMAT applicants are gearing up for R2                                                                                                         An MBA application requires extensive preparation. It is advisable to get over with GMAT as soon as possible and then dedicate atleast 2 months in preparing for the essays. While putting your application together, try and avoid these mistakes that could ruin your chances to the top business schools. Here are the top 5 mistakes that applicants make, that lower their chances when pitted against a candidate of similar profile.                                                                  1. Putting together a disconnected application
Generally applications are composed of essays, recommendations, resume and educational and professional details. The biggest mistake is when an applicant writes disconnected essays. The essays should connect together to form a clear picture of what the applicant has done in the past and how that ties up to the post-mba goals. Additionally it should also be clear how the past experience will help him get the most out of his MBA. Similarly if the essays mention about some leadership qualities at work, the recommendations should corroborate that. These should be reflected in the resume as well.                                                                                                       2. Post MBA goals should connect to your prior experience or education unless ...
… you want to be an entrepreneur. Even then there should be some common link either personally or professionally that is pushing you in choosing this goal. Choosing a post MBA goal that has no connection to your past experiences will reflect on a lack of clarity of vision and way to achieve it.                                                                                  3. Tailor each essay according to the school
Each school have their own requirements and hence the profiles they are looking for changes accordingly. You should research properly while choosing your schools so that they are a fit to your MBA goals. However despite that and even if they have similar essay questions , you will need to tweak your essays according to the school you are applying to. e.g. Kellogg stresses on collaboration , so when crafting your essays highlight on instances that brings forward your collaborative nature.                                                                             4. Interviews differ from what is written in the application
Admissions committee members are great at figuring out whether your essays are simply stories that you built or true experiences. In an interview, if you are unable to follow the same strain of thoughts as in your essays and stick to your guns, that may make your application end up in the rejection pile.                                                                                                        5. Poor recommendations
Recommendations are tricky. You cannot control what your recommenders will write about you. If your recommendations are poorly written, generic or does not cover all your strong points then it may affect your application adversely. Therefore, choose your recommenders carefully. They should be able to comment substantially over your leadership style and mention couple of achievements. That may mean that your current supervisor is not the right person if he has been overseeing you only for a short period of time. In that case you can choose your previous recommenders or clients who have worked with you for long. Finally the admission rounds are round the corner so ensure you don't do these mistakes. Highlight on your leadership capabilities, choose your recommenders, ensure they are well aware of you, your capabilities and achievements, do extensive research on schools, connect with current students and alumni, visit campuses, get excited and let that excitement show through your application.

Hi there,

I am planning to give GMAT around 26 27 th Dec 2016.

I wanted to know when can I schedule my exam latest by?

Are there  minimum number of days before the exam, for scheduling?

Please suggest on this.

Even though schools might say, we look at overall profile when asked how important is GMAT. As per my experience in admission consulting for last 3 years and as a part of admission comittee at my alma mater, I can say that GMAT is indeed quite important unless you get/have a WOW profile which is unique and differentiates you significantly. Let me give an example, I have had clients who got through ISB with 600 because of her unique profile( fashion designer; worked at ELLE and VOGUE and fashion week at Milan and Paris, currently works for a hotel chain). I took her interview and was crystal clear what she wanted. So basically I agree with what adcoms say but you are the best judge how unique your profile is. PM if you have any questions
