Ask a Consultant! - GMAT/GRE Only

Hi.. I have done B.Com and a Chartered Accountant. I have scored 700 in GMAT and have 2 years of work experience as of Nov 14. Can anyone suggest that is 2 years of work ex very less for an MBA in finance. I am looking at US , Singapore. What difference does it make in doing a MBA or MS in finance?

Tip for Applications:

Make Your Essays Local: Admissions officers can be the jealous type. They want to know that theirs is not just one of a dozen programs to receive your application. You need to show that you've done extensive research, talked to locals, even walked in their shoes.

For example, Columbia wants to know why the New York location is important to your goals.

Be specific:

What doors opened for your friend at last year's Venture Capital conference at the Digital Sandbox on Broad Street? What HACKATHON event did you attend where you networked with entrepreneurs who've received startup funding? Do you plan to unwind on Sundays up in Van Cortlandt Park playing on the 35 acres of new cricket pitches?

Supplying this level of detail applies to every school. It's easiest to be specific after you've visited. If that's not possible, talk with those who have, send emails to organizers, or to people who've been profiled in event media coverage. Use this local information to write your essays. I can't guarantee they will all respond, but that's part of the hustle you'll need to stand out.

Applying to B-schools across US, India, Germany and Singapore for Fall 2015 intake. I've already applied to a few schools in India and one in the US and am now busy with applications for R2 for US schools.

My profile:

GMAT Score: 670 (V37, Q46)

Acads: Average at best. graduated from an NIT with prior schooling abroad.

Work Ex: 3.5 years in IT as DWH developer.

ECAs: Good wide range of ecas throughout school, undergrad and professional career.

I know my GMAT score is below average when it comes to looking at average indian gmat scores for top 30 programs. Very confused on which schools to target. Already applied to Foster and am working on applications for Kelley, MSU, Katz and Georgia Tech aswell as schools in Singapore and Germany. Honestly don't know what chances I have of getting into any one of these schools. Would be grateful if anyone can suggest schools that match my profile.

hi! i am going to start my gmat preparation can you tell me the approximate score that is required to get into top b-schools(like lsb, stanford,MIT sloan). So, i can start my preparation with an aim of getting that much marks.

I am currently working as maintenance engineer in an MNC for the past 3.5 years. Due to some unavoidable reasons, I couldn't give GMAT prior to R2 deadlines, Is it better for me to take GMAT in the coming months and apply for R3 or wait for R1 next year??

By fall 2016, I would be having experience of 5 years. Will that affect my profile considerably or is it alright to apply with such experience?

My profile summary is as follows :

X-   92.7 %

XII- 93.1 %

Engineering- 7.47/10 from NIT, Nagpur

Hi,

I'm planning to do my MBA from US and I'm targetting Fall 2015 session. I have a GMAT score of 620. My profile:

Xth - 85%

XIIth - 94%.

I'm an SRCC graduate and I have also completed M.com through correspondence.

Work Experience - 40 months.

I'm a little apprehensive because it is a huge investment and Visa also expires if we don't find a job within 6 months. How is the scope of MBA Finance in US? Do you think MBA from Tier II university is worth it? Also, could you please suggest me the best colleges for my profile.

Bits of knowledge for Indian Candidates:

1. Indicate how your family business experience is far reaching

2. Demonstrate you know more than IT

3. Make the most of your extracurricular activities

4. Don't think all B-schools are made similarly

Hi,

Need some guidance here;I am currently working in a PSU with 5 years work ex. in Construction Management of Large Refinery and Petrochemical complexes.

I am looking forward to a career move to Project Management,Infra Policy Mgt. or Consulting role.

I am aiming  to do a executive MBA (1 Year) from top Indian Institutes like IIM A,B &C .Look to appear for GMAT in Nov 2015.

(MBA from abroad is doubtful due to high expenditure involved.)

Kindly Clarify if the above move is feasible.

Tip for Applications:

Break down your assessment in the following areas:

1. Work Experience: Industry, Overall Role, Your Impact, Strengths in this area, Weakness in this area

2. GMAT Score

3. Academics: Undergrad GPA, Grad GPA, Stregths and Weaknesses in each area.

4. Goals: Short term and Long term. What Industry? What Position? Major or Slight Career Shift?

5. Extracurriculars: Poetry, Drama, Social, anything worth mentioning outside of the class.

6. Miscellaneous Factors: Failures(if any). Obstacles overcome.

Hi! I just got admitted to McDonough School of Business. But did not get any scholarship. I already have a govt job here (approx 50k in hand per month) and now I am being counselled against leaving my govt job here and going out and spending approx 80k dollars per year for 2 years. Am being told that job scenario is not good for Indians over there with preference being given to local students. I was thinking of a career in consulting. Please guide. Other option am thinking of is a lower ranked Canada college like York schulich etc with higher scholarship chances lowering my risks.

Students already in Mcdonough telling me it IS tough job situation for indian students over there right now. Please guide.

Tip for Applications:

Diversify your style:

When handing out advice on essay writing, many experts encourage applicants to use short sentences. Others demand essays to be rich in detail, which require a longer sentence. So which is the most effective approach? The answer, of course, is both. The mark of strong writing - of interesting writing - is stylistic diversity, blending short and long, simple and complex sentences. Words have power and the way we string them together can call attention to the most important themes or points. What follows is a short breakdown of the types of stylistic devices you want to incorporate into your work:

Simple sentences: The anchors of any essay, short, simple sentences are the surest bet when conveying an important message in a small space. Simple sentences keep the reader interested and afford your work clarity, as you reduce the risk that a thought will go on too long and run out of steam. Perhaps most importantly, using a shorter sentence lowers the odds of committing a mistake likely to occur in a more complex sentence. It also goes without saying that simple sentences are the friend of any author battling a constrictive word count.

Compound sentences: Linking two simple sentences together is a great way to diversify your style, but compound sentences can also bridge ideas and lead into a powerful conclusion. These sentences are also useful to mitigate a weakness allowing that the final thought expressed by the sentence is the solution or takeaway rather than the weakness itself. Remember that compound sentences always feature a coordinating word such as and, but, nor, for, so or yet.

Complex sentences: We'll avoid the word "long" here, because there is no value in drafting a sentence that is long just for the sake of being long. However, there are times when you should use complex sentences that articulate multiple ideas. A well-crafted and artful complex sentence is suggestive of strong writing ability, which is one of the traits being evaluated in your application essays. Remember that a complex sentence is not merely the joining of two simple sentences (that is a compound sentence), but rather the joining of an independent clause and a dependent clause. Look for subordinating words such as since, after, although, or when.

Use of a series: One of the most common questions with regard to writing style is how to make the words in a series stand out to the reader. Again, diversity is ideal, but be careful not to go too far. Applicants see the power of simple sentences and go overboard in listing out a series of thoughts as individual sentences. Listing a series of ideas as separate sentences is a device that has become increasingly common and effective in fiction writing, but is dangerous ground in a professional document.

Whatever you do, never decide to list the serial items as individual paragraphs. Time and time again, this tactic has proven ineffective with essay readers.

Hi,

My name is siddharth rajpal and I passed out of NSIT, DU in June'14. I am currently working as a data analyst at infoedge and I have opened a start up where I make videos and films. I have already had a couple of NGO clients and private firms. I also have have a youtube channel which has over a million views and thousands of subscribers. I also have a job offer in Madison, USA, which starts in Oct'15, as a software developer which pays me 100k+ an annum, and a fellowship offer from young India fellowship.

I'm not sure of my future career but I dream of an MBA from the very best university in USA. I did give my GMAT but got a 690, I would prepare again and the minimum I expect to score is 720.

I need an advice- what should I do now that increases my chances of a selection at a good b school?

A note for International Students:

International students are not eligible for federal loans and whether they are considered for scholarships, fellowships, and grants is a choice for each individual institution.

For those international students seeking financial assistance through private loans, there are two options:

1. Seeking private loans through banks and lending institutions in their home country. This is a terrible option for students from countries where inflation is rampant and interest rates can soar about 20% (such as Argentina).

2. Applying for a specific international student loan brokered and offered by the institution in question. One byproduct of the recent financial crisis is that many schools either temporarily or permanently saw their loan arrangements for international students fall apart. Most top programs have patched this hole and now offer some sort of institutional loan program, but international students should make this their first inquiry at any school of interest.
