Hi Consultant....

Please resolve my query...
I am currently working with State Bank of India as Assistant Manager. Total Work ex so far including all I have is 3.5 yrs. I am a B.Com Honours Graduate (from Delhi University), and about to complete Company Secretary (CS) professional degree.

My co-curriculars, HSC SSC % etc are all good enough!

I am going through a lot of work pressure, and therefore I am not able to prepare for GMAT, hence I have availed leaves.

So my question is, in case I decide to resign, and remain unemployed for 6 months ...will that be a blot on my profile? Do foreign B schools like Nanyang, NUS, and other Asian B schools look for continuation in work-ex and will a High GMAT score suffice for that ?

Thanks in advance!

I have 3 years of IT experience as of now. Above average academics and decent achievements at work. CFA L2 candidate. Interested in finance esp. Fixed Income.
Which B school are good in finance apart from the top ones like Columbia, Wharton, NYU Stern, etc ?

Hi,

Thanks in advance for your help. I am a 28 year old management consulting professional with exposure to business research and analytic's at the start of my career. I have a total work experience of 7 years 4 months as of today and have registered for GMAT in January 2014 (started preparing). Previously, I have done my Economics Honors from Delhi University and have average academics (Graduation 58%, Xth 82% and XIIth 78%). I also have a PGCBM from XLRI.

Although I will try my best to get 700+ in GMAT (have appeared for CAT thrice and scored >93 %tile), but let's assume I end up scoring 680-720 in GMAT. For the “why MBA” question, I am looking at getting into industry from management consulting (like a strategy/ corporate planning role). Also, I would like to get a jump in my compensation (currently working in India at a CTC of $40,000). I jave home loan liabilities to take care if so need a secure B-School; also, I am married (no kids). Taking these assumptions, here are a few queries that I have:

1. Should I even consider a MBA abroad given my home loan liability, the fee for MBA programs and job insecurity?

a. If yes, then what B-Schools fit the bill? I shortlisted IMD and HKUST as of now, but given the fee for IMD and finance-driven placements for HKUST, I feel it's a risk.

2. What B-Schools in India will make sense for me?

a. I have shortlisted IIM-A PGPX only. Nothing else seems to fit the bill for me. ISB seems to be too competitive after I get into it and changes of getting better salary and preferred role seems to be less than IIMA. This is primarily as there is a lot of competition from 'young blood' at ISB.

I would really appreciate any help in this evaluation. Thanks!

Regards

Hi all,

SPJIMR offers two different calls: Profile Based calls and CAT score based calls.

Can anybody please let me know if we have to apply separately for profile based calls? If so, how do we do it?

Appreciate the help in advance.

Hi,

I'm 23. I have 2 years work experience in IT Consulting, developing web applications. The project that I am tagged to is an internal one, and hence had almost zero interaction with people outside my project team. However every application we developed involved constant communication with the stake holders. I've given my GMAT recently, and the unofficial score is 720. I've done my Engineering in Instrumentation Technology with a CGA of 8.76. Class 10 and 12 have been 90% and 78.5% respectively. I'm planning for 2015 admissions. Which B-schools in US do I stand a chance to get admitted? I'm working on doing some online certifications, pertaining to concepts such as Marketing, Business Strategy. Also, I'm trying to teach myself how to read, write and speak Swedish. How can I balance my profile better?

Pummyji, welcome to PG and to Ask-a-consultant thread.

I have a doubt about your certifications- why get unrelated certificates when you don't belong to the industry where you would require them (FLMI/ AFSI)? My analysis may be wrong here, so please correct me if so.

When you apply to the b-schools on your list- you are competing with other IT/ engineers/ (male?) - this is a deadly combination, because so many applicants have it. Therefore, you have to present some moments of brilliance through your essays and recommendations, that make the adcom put a check mark on your application (for acceptance).

As you have more work experience than most ISB applicants, I would assume, you have these brilliant moments in your bag.

The other potential hazard is your GMAT, and none of the b-schools on your list will be very forgiving of that. Any chances to improve there? You could still prep and apply to ISB in R2. A better score will also help questions related to a low GPA get pushed under the carpet.

Hi Namita

The certificaitons are relevant as they belong to insurance and financial services and I work as s Business Analyst in the Insurance domain for an IT firm.

I do have moments of brillance which I can provide through my essays and my recommenders will also do so.

Regarding GMAT, isn't 650 good enough for IIMC, IIML and ISB. although I have a low GPA in BE, but my MBA GPA stands good at 70% so won't that compensate.

Also Let me know as to how is IIM I and is it worth applying for it

Hi, I am a fresher, B.Tech, 2013 passout with no work ex.

I intend to give GMAT this November. I want to know being a fresher do I stand any fair chances in any reasonably good b school globally, given a decent GMAT score (650-700). If yes, which are they? I need some 5 names to which I can send score as provisioned by GMAT. I don't want to waste my prospects by sending scores to a "Harvard or Booth" as its too far a dream!!
Please help asap....thanx 😃

Hi,

I am a computer engineer 2010 passout from Mumbai university with a First class degree.

Currently i have 3 years of experience in IT industry. Working in iGate Global system pvt. ltd. as a senior software engineer (QA). I have worked with US and Europeans clients.

I have a GMAT score of 590 (Q:47 V:23).

I know my GMAT is on the lower side and its surely not enough for top b schools.
I am looking for decent b schools within my range. Since my GMAT is quite low i am open to US as well as European b-schools. Any help from your side will be great.
Thanks!!
