Total work experience 7.5 years. Currently looking to pursue second MBA (starting from 2014) from Ivy league universities. Please let me know if I stand a chance.

Pritam, you recently got done with an MBA, you are on a fast track growth, and into general management - something which other MBA candidates seek. You are recruiting highly qualified people under you. Seems like you career is on the right path.

Where is the need for another MBA??

The adcoms are going to ask you the same thing.

When people do a second MBA, they would typically have worked for 3- 10 years, utilized the benefits they derived from the first MBA, and gone back to b-school to retool themselves.

I don't see that scenario applying to you.

A better strategy would be to continue your high track growth for another few years and then join an executive education program (IIMs) or a Fellowship program (Sloan MIT/ LBS or Nanyang) which are meant for people on the CXO route.

So if you want to know whether you stand a chance at an Ivy league, I would think minimal. Some of them (like Tuck, Columbia and Duke in the US) also have a no-2nd MBA policy.

@mba-help , Can you please guide me which all Indian B-schools take GMAT score despite ISB? I'm looking for admission for the 2014 batch and haven't given the GMAT yet. Also, when do most admission applications close out by? I understand ISB has its second round of admissions by November 15.

Hi Pritam,

There are few colleges who do not allow 2nd MBA. So it would be prudent to write and ask MBA admission office about your eligibility. Having said this, you have a decent profile with good GMAT, GPA from a reputed institute and ECs. You should stand a good chance in b-schools.

Let me know in case you require any assistance in school selection or profile evaluation.

Hi Rakesh,

You have an avg. profile with decent GMAT score. With the given information, you may target b-schools like: Duke, Darden, Cornell, McCombs, Kenan-Flagler, USC-Marshall, Emory, Indiana-Kelley, McDonough, CEIBS-Shanghai, NUS & Nanyang. Application essays and interview plays a pivotal role in b-school admission, so I would suggest you to take the assistance of professionals. Academics:-

10th- 84 12th-82 B.E.-72.6

Average extra curriulars

Work Experience:-

Involvement in datawarehousing domain, providing ETL development for mapping data to be shown to investors through reports/website.

Involved in mentoring new joiness, providing trainings

Spot awards and few appreciations for innovation and critical project completions.

I had left the organisation as i was being moved to a new position in an entirely different domain (retail) and i was interested in finance area, particularly asset management.

Currently doing a live project and will look for relevant internship post that.

Interested in doing a MBA in Finance.

How is my profile for applying to good B schools abroad (for finance)?

Which B-schools should i target and what is the average GMAT score there ?

Hi Sundeep,

Your work experience is on lower side. I don't see much potential in applying this yr. Would suggest you to wait another year and strengthen your profile by heading a team, professional achievements and other aptitudes. As these elements are essential in writing application essays, so I would suggest you to build your profile and then apply. You must aim for 700+ GMAT score to be able to apply in good b-schools.

depends on which industry/role you are targeting. Natives are given preference for certain roles, you could say, more in marketing and HR kind of functions, where one needs an understanding of local demographics. Getting into consulting for instance is relatively easier.

@gmatrakesh

2) Will companies which recruit in OPT period generally sponsor for our H1-B visa?

Again depends on the company that recruits you. Some of them are more open to sponsoring H1Visas, while some are not. But since the OPT would last another 9 months after you graduate, you should not have a problem getting a visa, if the company is willing to give you one in the first place.

Lots of applicants get through Kelley and other higher ranked schools. Present your application well - this is where most rejected applicants tend to go wrong.

As of today, I've some 25 months of work experience. I understand most IIMs have a criteria of 27 years of age and/ or 5-7 years of experience, none of which I possess at the moment. Is ISB the only option?

@atush

Hi MBA Consultant,It would be very helpful if you evaluate my profile and give some advice for MBA.My profile- Work-ex (Wipro Tech) -30 months/ Graduation B.E. - 72%

This year I am preparing for CAT and other Indian b-school programs although I want to write GMAT, I I need to keep option for abroad too.

I am confused when should I write GMAT as application deadline for most of the public universities is OCT-R1 and Jan-R2.

If I focus on CAT this year and give GMAT next year I need to apply with 4 years of work-ex.I want to attend to switch career path from IT to General management. Please suggest me some US State universities, and when should I write GMAT ?What potential difference do you see if I join next MBA batch with 3.5 YOE or 4.5 YOE ?

Hi Atul,

I am unable to find professional achievements, leadership style and short/long term goals in your profile. However, if you are unable to showcase these attributes in application essays, then it would be difficult to apply in b-school(s) and face the adcoms during interview.

Having said this, if you are able to demonstrate these skills, then you must write GMAT (aim for 700+) by mid-July and target ISB Cycle-1 and other b-schools in US. Starting early is the key point.

Feel free to ask any other concerns you might have. You may PM your details as well for discussion in length.

@pallavi12

I have started gmat prep this very month only, can anybody tell me how to manage time in daily prep,,also tell me about scholarships in good colleges and how to get them...i have low budget and any institute or agents required for follow up with colleges.

Hi Pallavi,

GMAT requires comprehensive preparation. I would suggest you to devote 3-4 hrs. daily and write mock test in alternate days. This way you would be able to gauge wherever you are lacking and then work on those pointers. Regarding scholarship, I would suggest you to do some research on schools you want to apply in, download brochures and read them thoroughly to understand the program, curriculum & scholarships offered. Please do not rely on any agents or mediators.

Let me know if this helps!!

The visa laws are more relaxed in both Canada and Singapore. I don't understand what you mean when you say you don't have high qualifications in your resume. Maybe you can explain yourself better

Hi James,

An avg. acads and GPA can certainly be offset by submitting stron application essays and showcasing headship qualities, professional achievements and ability to work wth others during the final interview. As you have an avg. profile therefore I would suggest you to aim for 700+ GMAT score to make a stron candidature. You may visit school website and view class profile to check your eligibility. Few good Asian b-schools are, Nanyang, NUS, AIM-Manila, SMU-Singapore, CEIBS-Shanghai and CUHK. Let me now in case of further queries.

Hi,

I wish to do an MBA from India. I tried considering options of CAT over GMAT and decided to take the GMAT in a short span of time. I did come across a lot of colleges that accept GMAT scores and 5 years of experience that included IIMs. Can you please help me with top colleges other than ISB that accept GMAT scores with a work experience of 3 years?

Thanks

Hi guys,

My mini profile is like this-

GMAT: 710
Btech: IIT 7.463
Work Ex 3 yrs
EC and leadership: average :/
(I can elaborate more on work ex in the application as it is good and relevant to my future career)
I really want to go to colleges like Duke, Tuck , Ross etc. i.e within top 15-30 colleges.
Can Someone tell me that that with this profile can I make it to these colleges?
I know they are kind of long shot for me, but one of the seniors (Sowmya) tells here , in her MBA series, that any score above 700, and a good application and interview is all that is needed to make it to top 15 colleges (she made it to Duke). And I am not even targeting top 15 ones, just the top 20-30 ones.
