Guys,

Firstly, pardon me from spawning a thread not exactly for MBA but a related course, Masters in Engineering Management.

I have received an admit from the Dartmouth College's Masters in Engieering Management program. Is there anyone on PG who has applied to the MEM program at Dartmouth or Duke, or a similar program at another insitute. I would like to discuss the prospects and pros/cons of such a program v/s the traditional MBA, since such programs are geared towards teaching technology management specifically to engineers.

Any takers?

Cheers

Stanford has a similar program, dont recall the name though. check the school site.
The difference is that they need GRE scores and not GMAT. Considering that Stan is in the heart of the valley, placements are good too.

The downside is that the class will be compeltely techie, which reduces the diversity.

check out Duke University's Masters of Engineering Management Program. I beleive it is significantly better than Dartmouth ..

If you're more interested in knowing about Duke, as also Duke vs. Dartmouth and other schools, let me know ...

Ram,

Thanks for your response.... actually I already have the details regarding Duke Vs Dartmouth from the admitted students forum in the Dartmouth website. Anyways, since I have an admit from Kelley for full-time MBA, I will opt for that due to the inherent advantages of an MBA over this specialized course.

Cheers!

Hi Nimit,

I have not researched much on Duke's course, but here's the most comprehensive information I could find in this regard.

This is from the forums in MEM admitted students website:

"For those of you who may be choosing between the MEM programs at Duke and Dartmouth, here is my perspective on some of the differences between the programs:

1) Tuition fees & Financial aid
2006-2007 annual tuition at Duke is $31,500 and at Dartmouth is $33, 297. Duke's program is only one year, however since Dartmouth's is one year and one term, the total tuition to complete Dartmouth's program is typically $44,394.89. However, there is no question that you get more content from Dartmouth's program because it contains 13 courses whereas Duke's only contains 8 courses. Also, one huge difference is that Dartmouth offers need-based financial aid, and I do not think Duke offers any such aid. Dartmouth MEM students with adequate need will receive 40% tuition scholarships (and many of our students do receive this amount of aid). So for these students, the typical tuition minus scholarship for the entire Dartmouth MEM is only $26,636.93, less than Duke's total tuition of $31,500.

2) Program Length & Internship
As I said above, Duke's program is 1 year (2 semesters) and Dartmouth's is 15 months (4 terms). So, you get more content from Dartmouth's program. Another benefit of Dartmouth's longer program is that your required internship is typically the summer before your final term with us. This allows you to apply your new business and engineering skills to the internship, and it is fairly common for the internship to lead to your full-time post-MEM employment. On the other hand, I understand that the majority of Duke students complete their required internship before even beginning their Duke coursework (the summer before starting at Duke).

3) MBA electives & who teaches business courses
I believe that a huge benefit of Dartmouth's program is our close relationship with top-ranked Tuck School of Business. Our students actually go over to Tuck School (perhaps 200 yards from Thayer School - and connected underground for the winter!) to take some MBA electives with MBA students. Additionally, all of our required business/management courses are taught by full Tuck School faculty. As best I understand, it is extremely difficult for Duke students to take courses at Fuqua and the majority of Duke's required business/management courses are taught by adjunct professors (not Fuqua faculty).

On the other hand, Duke does have a close relationship with its law school. So if you are very keen on law, that is a benefit there. Dartmouth does not have a law school, but we do have a professor from Vermont Law School (20 minutes away) who teaches an elective "Law, Technology, and Entrepreneurship", Tuck School has some law electives, and you have the option of going to Vermont Law School for some electives.

Finally, I thought I would note that we do have an official exchange program between the Dartmouth and Duke MEM programs so that students in either program can spend a semester/term at the other school. We actually have a woman from Duke's MEM program on exchange with us here at Dartmouth for this current winter term. You can see details on the exchange program at:

Duke University Exchange - on Dartmouth's website
or
Dartmouth Option - on Duke's website

I hope this information is helpful!

Hope this helps!:)

My GRE score is 2130, I wrote the GRE 4 years ago when the maximum score was 2400... and Im not too sure if there is a min requirement for GRE score, a good normal score should do... rest I would suggest you to check the website and contact someone in the adcom regarding this...

I would not say this is a very competitive program, so dont worry about getting a very high score... and good profile would matter more I guess...

I was thinking of Engineering management / Technology management but in UK or Australia. Not is US, becoz of the fee, which is more in US as compared if i am right?

Can anybody suggest what kind of opportunities we have after this kind of degree.

Thnx

I heard MBA in engineering management is good. There are many good colleges in singapore provides this course.

MBA Engineering management

Hey,

for an engineering student is doing MEM better than the conventional MBA? won't we be at a sort of loss for not doing a traditional MBA?
