congrats! would you mind pouring in a little more info about yourself. like, any extra currics or special stuff under your belt...achievements etc...basically, anything that you think might differentiate you? also, could you please post your breakup of the gmat, i want to get an idea abt my chances, i`m planning to app in fall 07, i`ll have 3 yrs that time and i`m almost in the same boat as you. i got 730 (v42, q48, awa5.5), so i guess your info should be pretty useful to me as well. also, why iowa...why did u choose it? some special background info on it? sorry for so many querries and thanks in advance for the answers!

Hey guys .. thanx a lot for ur responses ..

to begin answering ur questions

yup I did have an interview. some of the questions that I was asked were:
1. Describe current job responsibilities
2. Netime when you went out of ur way to help a client
3. Netime when you had to negotiate with a client
4. Give examples when you demonstrated leadership at work

I submitted my application on 28th Nov and got the admission result on Jan 11

The breakup of my GMAT was 720 (v38, q50, awa4.5),
undergratute: BE Computer Science Thapar Institute class of 2003, acad - average, extra curr: average, good at school
other stuff... was promoted at work in half the time, handled big international projects early .. could demonstrate consistent career progression .. volunteer work at day care center in a hospital

Chose Iowa because I thought it offered a good ROI. Have a friend studying there .. she dropped columbia and tepper to go to Iowa since she was getting good funding at Iowa .. she was all praise for the school and said she din regret dropping the other schools to go to Iowa at all .. The school offers a small program and the faculty goes out of their way to make it a customized experience for each student. The career services deppt is also ranked very high..

Having said all that I would still like to get more inputs from the wise people on this forum before I deicide to join this school , hence this thread .. ;)

Thanx !!!!

Hi Conformist:

Iowa and AIM both are wonderful schools, which hold equivalent platform in Indian job market.

There are two factors which should help you decide:

1. Cost: Go with the school that puts least pressure on your finances.
2. Post MBA location: If you want to come back to India post MBA (assuming you are still in India), go with AIM. Tippie will not fetch you a better salary anywhere in India; on the contrary AIM is much more popular across Asia. However, if you want to settle in US, atleast for the first 5-6 years, Iowa experience will beat AIM anyday.

Now take your call on these two parameters and go ahead.

All the best!
D.

Hi !confirmist,

I too have got an offer from Tippie with a good scholarship. my profile is :
Electronics Engineer : Topper in University
> 3 yrs workex
GMAT : 690

I have also got an offer from NUS...the same case as yours. Now I want to go to the place where I'll get good ROI. Can you please tell me the total cost of Tippie MBA?

If you want, you can also get in touch with me at

For the ppl who are still waiting for an interview or applying, my interview was really lengthy. It was over 30 mins and it was mostly situation based questions like :
1. Describe a situation where u have shown leadership roles.
2. Describe a situation where have shown initiative.
.........etc

To be very frank, I was not at all expecting such questions and I was totally unprepared for these sort of questions. But I showed good presence of mind by answering all the questions immediately. That really impressed the AdCom.

Cheers

congrats coolmayuk and !confirmist.

Hey coolmayukh ....

I think the cost should be around 12000 USD for a year if u have graduate assistantship .. should be equivalent or less than what u'd be spending at NUS .. will get in touch via mail soon .. we can discuss more bout this in detail ...

Gurus,
Can you please clarify if 12K is the tuition+living cost for a year (assuming GA)?
Acn you write the approx breakup ?

GA =
Living Cost =

I think he is talking about the total cost (tuition + living + other expenses). Abt the individual break-up go to the site http://www.biz.uiowa.edu/fulltimemba/finaid/tuition.asp. U'll get detailed cost here.

Hi !confirmist,

How are u? What have u decided? Can you or anyone from this group give me an idea which one will be better :

1. University of Iowa : Tippie
2. NUS

Consider that I can bear the cost of both. I am really confused. Please help anyone.

Thanks
Mayukh

Hiii...I had an admit from NUS last yr, but did not take it since I found out, that the job scene in singapore is not good. The placements, if they happen are based on your pre mba work ex and not an MBA as such.

The only advantage in going to NUS is tht u get an international exposure at a cheaper cost than US.
But if you can afford Iowa than without doubt go for it.

this is my opinion...choice is urs!!!

Hi Mayukh .. sorry for the late reply buddy

I have the following opinion:
If you do not have any particuar intention of working in South East Asia and would like to work in the US then IOWA would be a better option. Considering you will be spending the same amount in IOWA and NUS u will find more opportunities if u do ur MBA frm IOWA. The overall experience at IOWA will definitely be great and better than what you can expect at NUS in my opinion. The career services at IOWA are ramked amongst the best and that could be gr8 aid post mba.

Also I think graduating from IOWA and working in US it would be easier to come back to work in say Singapore but the reverse might not be true.

I will be accepting the offer from IOWA .. will keep u posted if I have any more info ..

cheers !!!!

hey !conformist,
can u tell us the exact amount of aid that was granted to u from IOWA? have u by chance received in-state tuition status?

Hi confirmist,

I have talked with lots of ppl currently staying in US; some are students studying MBA in US, some are professors in B schools and others are US residents.

My frnds studying MBA in US are saying that Iowa is a quiet place in the mid-west. So its location is not good regarding big companies. I know its 3 hrs drive from Chicago and near Minneapolis. But all my frnds are saying not to go to Iowa.

I know a professor in a US B school. He told me to join Iowa. Though he mentioned that job situation in US is not great now, but its improving.

I know NUS will cost me much more that Iowa. Now I am in a dilemma.
What do u think abt the comments made by those staying in US?

Thanks
Mayukh.

I think u will need to spend more than $12K/yr to take care of the travel expenses to the west or east coast for purpose of networking 😃
