Hi Puys,

Its a privilege to be able to start this thread which was the only lifeline that I had last year, for my MBA aspirations. It would be a pleasure to be able to address the queries regarding admissions to Goa Institute of Management for the 2009-11 batch. We would try our best to help aspirants know the college better and understand what it takes to be here.

Regards,

Hi Akshay,

Thanks for the initiative..
I am a B.E in electronics from Utkal Univ with 3+ yrs of exp as a manpower consultant for software companies..I am interested only in HR and I have a few queries.

1)I wanted to know about the placement scene for HR guys in GIM..the companies, profiles on offer and the salary range..

2)I also wanted to know how is the cutoff decided? do the work ex guys have any advantage there? i mean is it a little lower for them? :P

3) WRT the batch which just passed..how many guys had done their specialization in HR?

regards

Hello

The placement for HR (infact for all streams) is very good... You name the HR profile you are looking for and we will have some one placed in that particular profile. This year our first PPO came for a Corporate HR profile from TATA Motors. If you want further details please have a look at last year's placement brochure

http://www.gim.ac.in/uploads/studprofile/1_placefile_PLACEMENT_REPORT_2008.pdf

The cut off is decided over the XAT score. Last year's cut off was 90.01 perc. Work-ex guys have a advantage only once they clear the initial XAT cutoff. Work-ex has a weightage of 10% in the total score for canditature..

I dont have the exact figures of last year students who specialised in HR. but the number must be definately around 20.. In our batch i.e. 2009 batch again around 25 students are specialising in HR. and another 25 have HR as their minors..

Here I would also like to point out that GIM doesnt have the concept of specialisation. We follow an ELECTIVE system, where students are allowed to take credits from any discipline (say Marketing, HR, Systems, General Mgmt, Finance and Operations) subject to a max cap in the 2nd year.

Is GIM program fully residential or we can live off-campus also?

Is GIM program fully residential or students are also allowed to live off-campus?

Yes, the 2 year course at GIM is fully residential and needs the students to be on the campus. This is required since there will be lots of group projects that you shall be working on, for you need to be present on campus.

All 120 students are required to take up hostel accomodation on campus. On a personal note it is much more fun if you stay on campus, unless you have a specific reason for not staying.

Hi,

As told by Akshay, the GIM PGP is a fully residential programme. As a rule you have to take up a hostel room even if your house touches the boundry wal of the institute. the house that actually touches the boundry wall is a 300 year old villa still occupied by original family.

Having never stayed in a hostel I was really scared about the quality of living spaces in GIM but Hostel Facilities in GIM are highly functional and comfortable.

GIM has five hostels that go by the name of Ladies Hostel, OT(the largest and the most happening), Admin(envy of others cos its fully wi fi), Morgue and Hilltop(the haunt of the padhakoo public) in a tribute to GIM building's legacy as a medical college.

Basic amenities are very well maintained by a dedicated staff of housekeeping and a new contractor hired by the students committee. Toilets are clean and the bathrooms have perpetual supply of cold and solar heated hot water.

The rooms are 2 seater or 3 seater depending upon the size of the room.

The clincher --- all living spaces are in proximity to the main academic block which means that you can even come back to your room and take a nap between half an hour lecture breaks because sleeping during lectures is strictly prohibited. If you forget something, you can just run back and bring it.

And as already mentioned, the group work is facilitated by living on campus. In a non residential campus, you have to go back home at somepoint....but in GIM if its 8pm right now and you have a submission by 8am...you actually have 12 hours to get it all done.

So thats the story of GIM residential Infrastructure, you can come here with absolutely no doubt in your mind....

well snape nice reply...

bt u forgot the Single Seaters...;) .. there are some 6-7 single seater rooms also.. bt generally they are occupied by the senior batch..

Hi,

The rooms are 2 seater or 3 seater depending upon the size of the room.

Definately dude.. Wish you luck..

I want to make one statement here and I will stand by it till this world remains.. GIM is the most unbiased college in India.. You are totally chosen on the basis of your merit and skill-sets.. We dont have any reservations (except for Goan Domicile, for whom the cutoff is reduced by 10 perc) or any management seats...

At GIM its all fair and honest.. We are very transparent in our processes and dont worry.. Being an HR majors isnt considered bad here..

@rahulbagati - I respect that GIM has no reservation. Also, XLRI also has no reservation.

@akkinaya and severus snape - Thanks a lot for the information. I am looking for non-residential program only because of my family probs.

Thanks again.

a slight twist here. taking up a hostel room is compulsory but staying there is not. Dr. ambuj from our batch stays with his wife about a kilometre away from campus, but he has taken up a room nonetheless.

Yes, parikshit is rite and at times we do forget that Ambuj doesnt stay or rather sleep on campus(yes at times we do sleep at nite for a change!!;)).

In special circumstances like that of Dr. Ambuj who has his family here students are allowed to stay out of campus. But yet you need to take up a room in the hostels nonetheless.

yahan toh kaarvan banta ja raha hai aur kaafila badh raha hai!!!

I see Parikshit and the great Communications God Sherry Sandhu on the admissions thread....and I said WOW!!!!

Ab waqt aa gaya hai ki hum un ehsaanon ka badla chukayein jo last year seniors ne hum par kiye the...chhoti se chhoti baat ka jawaab de kar...woh bhi kai kai baar...

I exhort all the good musicians to apply to GIM. We have a got a few and few more will come and we will put together a GIM Band....maybe it will be called the "RiBANDers"....

So If you are good at playing any musical instrument (and reasonably good student and serious about joining a good b school) do apply and your career will catch a new and better note!!!

Yipeee - I just realised 2 things....

EDIT BUTTON IS BACK!!!!

I AM A HARDCORE PAGAL NOW!!!

thanks seniors for clearing our doubts...
can u tell us about the fees structure and whether scolarships are awarded to meritious students or not????

Hi Coolraj420,

The fees for the 2009-11 batch has been declared as Rs 450000. In addition to this other expenses like hostel accomodation and caution deposits come to around 20K. For a complete breakup of the same u can visit this link.

Hello Seniors@GIM,

Could you please tell me if GIM considers sectional cutoffs?
Also, were there any placements in brand management last year?

Thanks for your help.
