Hello All,
I'm BE(computer) and currently have 4 years of experience in IT(cognizant) with a short term USA/client side exposure. After knowing the industry and IT business well now I'm feeing the need for business education to reach to the roles and responsibilities I would like to handle. Naturally MBA came to my mind.
By the time I appear for B-school interviews I would be having 5 years of exp. Now I met a few people who say that more than 4-5 years of exp. is actualy detrimental for your campus placements because selectors look for fresh minds...with lower exp. levels and also some other reasons. Is this true?
With 5 years of exp. I know the executive MBA option of IIM ABC, XLRI etc is also open for me but the purpose of executive MBA is to raise your level in the same ladder rather than enable you to completely switch profiles/industries which we commonly see in normal MBA. I would like to switch to other industries than IT if a good profile/responsibility is offered. Also 5 yrs exp is lowest exp in exe.MBA ..most of them have 7-10 years exp. so I may not fit the requirements the recruiters are looking for.
MBA outside India is pretty expensive and I am still not sure about whether I would be couragious enough to take a loan of ~40lakhs to complete my education.
How should I proceed? Please guide.
Thank you!
Scintilla
i don't think it will be such a problem...There are many ppl in MBA colleges with 4-5 yrs work-ex...You can check the batch & student profiles of different colleges...
Thanks for your reply gajodhar. The question isn't how many people are there with more than 4-5 years exp. ~ the question is as most have less than 2 years exp are those with 4-5 years exp given the edge above others? Are they considered not-suitable for some jobs recruiters are looking for?
Waking up an old thread - the question definitely is very important and needs more attention. I'm sure many aspirants would have this dilemma. All guru's please share your gyan..
Wid 4-5 years of Work ex i believe there is no point looking beyond top 15 Colleges.. as far as CTC's & profile r concerned.
Most of the consultancy firms actually looks for work ex guys only.... & these consultancy firms comes in good numbers in top 15 colleges..
For Sales/Marketing --- having 4-5 years of work ex before MBA becomes a serious roadblock for the placements... have experienced this in my interviews...
U must be ready to compromise on CTC in lieu of change in profile... going with this mindset there wont be much of an issue..
Also i have seen that for people with higher work ex, the MBA degree pays u returns 2-3 years after your MBA .. in terms of your responsibility....
I guess the main AIM should be getting in to a decent college, rest everything will fall in place....
IMO the off campus company pool is much higher than on campus specially for people with higher work ex...
Cheers:grin:
Have you explored your eligibility for scholarships abroad? The benefit of a MBA in a foreign country is much more when you have a decent period of work ex. In case that doesn't work out, you should look at the top 10 Indian Bschools only, anywhere else would be a waste.
